I just got a food sealing system, so will try it next summer.

Meanwhile, I have found it easy to use the mango pieces, frozen in a big lump, in regular zipper lock plastic bags.  The mango doesn't seem to freeze that hard, maybe due to sugar content? So it's easy to slice the lump into smaller pieces for the blender or whatever.

This was the first summer that I have frozen quite a lot of mango. Have made luscious mango Margaritas for friends.  But my preference is a mango smoothie with nothing added.   8)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Sweet tart growth habit

Question to those who have had some experience with loving Sweet Tart:

How do you determine the best time to pick it?  And to eat it?

My ST skipped fruiting last year, but I have high hopes for this coming summer.
And I want to do it right, as some of the ones I ate were too tart while others were terrific.

I suggested a couple possibilities, and my friend planted Fairchild. It was Squam who convinced me that Fairchild was good. I had confused it for years with Florigon, which I don't enjoy.

Zands, you're right. She has decided she has room for a second tree. She's in a good but not excellent location, about 5 miles inland. I'm tempted to recommend LZ, but I don't know if it will bear well without any fungicide sprays after it blooms.  My LZs always look great, but I do spray copper several times on all my trees.

I also don't know how common bacterial black spot is. I think of anthracnose as always being in the air, ready to pounce. I don't think that I have dealt with black spot in recent years, but perhaps my spraying has prevented it.

My fairchild was loaded this year and has never had a drop of any spray on it.
Big bloom and biggest crop so far.   Smaller mango is the biggest drawback imo.

Fairchild is super reliable, puts out every year which makes up for the small size of the fruits. My experience w my Fairchild tree. Plus is a delicious mango.

Very nice.  In the past I've rarely heard good things about Florida-grown papaya.

I've had to do it twice through the years.

From time to time I still visit my Keitt and Kent in Tamarac, and my Gary in downtown Lake Worth.

looks awesome! are any of his mangoes being propagated? or maybe sell any scions?

I will make California mango scions available for the following:

Aloha
Cypress
Diplomatico
MT2
MT3

I'll put it in the Sell/Trade board

If any talented grafter in Florida wants to try grafting these, especially Aloha, I will buy the budwood for you.  In 3-4 years I will expect a return on my investment.....one mango would suffice, 3 would be better.  ;D

the Aloha mango is absolutely amazing!

Always fun to hear about a new and wonderful mango.   ;D

Just want to give a quick shout out to Alex, aka Squam, who presented a lecture to the Palm Beach Fruit Council on growing mangos in Palm Beach County.

His presentation was very informative, smooth, and useful.
Especially helpful was his breakdown of growing conditions as they vary from the coastal region to the western hinterlands.     8)

A good time was had by all.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: fruit punch mango growth and taste.

It's quite possible I've never had a Mallika at its best.

That said, I would* definitely choose Fruit Punch. It has a great, overall fruity, mangoey flavor. It's a decent size, and pleasant to look at as well.

*I gave Mallika away a long time ago.

"but don't such diseases affect the quality of the meat?"

That's a fair question. I think the answer is sometimes, depending on the cultivar of mango, the particular disease, and perhaps the degree of ripeness.

Hopefully, others can answer this better than I.

Years ago I read an  newspaper article that called the black spots "sugar spots" and said they were God's way of telling us the mango was ripe.  I found that to be overly fanciful at best.

When I'm eating mangos, maybe a couple pounds a day, my fasting blood sugar ranges between 145 and 160, too high.

I'm a Type 2 diabetic, and not active. I think most "normal" folks would not be adversely affected.

To get really healthy blood sugar levels, I have to eat low carb and take in a bit of resistant starch.

Great review.

Somehow it reminded me of a Meg Ryan movie scene.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best tasting Mangos of 2016

Nice thread, Simon. Thanks for great analysis from you and others.

I was out of state for about 16 days, and I'm afraid I missed some of my favorite cultivars completely.  >:(

But the few I have tried in the last couple days have been superb; I'm told that the weather in my area was hot and dry while I was gone. I have several dead plants to support that.  At any rate, perhaps the dry weather has improved the flavor after a wet spring.

The Pineapple Pleasure I had was friggin delicious, as was the lone 36-8. The latter had coconut notes that I personally found far more enjoyable than the Coconut Creams I have tasted; the pineapple flavor probably helped in that regard.  My Dots are excellent now, far better than the ones I tasted at the beginning of July.

My Lemon Zests are not ready yet. The tree fruited poorly (after two good years in a row) but I have high hopes for the ones that did set.

This is the first year my Edgar fruited. The first couple I have tasted are sweet and rich, but have grassy / immature notes for which I had to deduct points.   These fruits are showing some sunken, black lesions near the stem end. I don't know how much this will affect eating quality.

Thanks, Rob.  Appreciate your help, as always.

I just purchased mangos with these names, but can't find any information on them.

Would anyone know of possible alternative spellings?

Also found Buttercream (or Butter Cream?) at Zill HP.  Were these formerly numbered (so I could search for information on them) ?

Thanks!

I like the vacuum sealer idea.
I check them out every time I go down that aisle in Costco.

Even if some flavor is lost, you can make some powerful mango margaritas in December.  :)

Alex, your Edward mangos played well in Peoria.*
"Best I've ever tasted."   8)
My relatives assumed they came from my trees and I may have left that notion unchallenged.

That reminds me of some other questions:

What is the meaning of life?

Why is there something, rather than nothing?

And, of course,  which mango is really the best?

Just that! Just dug up 2 huge bottle palms making room for more.. Problem is I'm not sure what I wanna plant in the front yard.....

I have a sapodilla kind of near the road in front yard.
It has a longish fruiting season, and the neighbors don't seem to notice the fruit.
Handsome tree, not a fast grower, at least under my level of care.

Dan, excellent mangos!
I let mine fruit this year fast grower

Glad to hear they do well in California  :)

I don't know yet how they compare to other cultivars regarding disease resistance in Florida's humidity; I definitely enjoy the flavor.

Joe, I found it at Truly Tropical, in Delray Beach. Their tree list is on their web site.

Alex,   I'd offer you Jacqueline, which is going to be cut down. But she's a good 20 feet tall and 4 feet in circumference.........  :'(

I think I'm the first guy on my block to have a Zill Indochinese* mango tree.
Please don't hate me for being bountiful.

*sometimes known as ZINC  or  ZIC

Sorry.....the image is upright on my PC, but not here.
