Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Garcinia seedling
« on: April 02, 2018, 05:37:37 PM »
Luc's (mexican), Lemon drop mangosteen (Intermedia??)
Or any other you can talk me into.

SO I plant and love mangos.  I am trying atemoya and recently got interested in Garcinia (stuff I read on the forum).
I should be getting some seeds soon curtsy a generous forum member.  I am interested in getting a seedling or two though and Luc's is talked about a lot, also lemon drop.

So does anyone, preferably in Florida have seedlings to sell or trade?

PM me.

Have both Lucs and Achachairu for sale in 3gal in Florida. West coast of FL though. I see you're in Jupiter

Zill planned to release some at some point this year. Haven't released them yet

Even at an early stage the Fiji dwarfs have shorter stout fronds. I wouldn't go getting rid of it though. Wait it out

Ok, so I did manage to find one but he said they are open pollinated and could be crossed. Anyone know how to tell for sure if it is a Fiji dwarf or a cross? It looks an awful lot like my Malayan Gold...

That will be a cross

What is the name of the fort Myers nursery?  Or is that the name?

I would like to get one of these

Top Tropicals... They ship too if you didn't want to drive from Merritt?

6
Hawaiian tropical plant nursery

Ship to all 50

Went to order, the site shows they are back-ordered for now.  Bummer.  The Fort Myers nursery shows in stock, but they are so EXPENSIVE there.  A friggin' seedling is $90.00 picked up.  25 gallon trees are $375.00 (these are generic prices, they do NOT have the Achacha showing in any size larger than seedling).  I'm used to paying $250.00

Are you looking at their listed container size available? I saw the plants they have for sale. They aren't what I would consider Seedlings  they are in 3gal. You should get going on starting some as you won't find a 25gal. Get some seeds and in a couple years they will be at the size of the 3gal

While we're on the topic of Fiji Dwarf coconuts... I have one in a large rain barrel that's developed what appears to be a potassium (and possibly magnesium, but at least potassium) deficiency - yellowing of older leaves, central vein and extreme edges remain green, then the leaflets begin to wither from their tips.  How long after potassium fertilization should the chlorosis stop spreading on older fronds?  Should symptoms stop spreading essentially immediately, or is there a delay of days / weeks before you see the effect?

More likely to see the improvement in new/emergent fronds. Could be that they're in Iceland. Do you still have it indoors?

Fruitscapes on Pine Island has had them.

Fiji dwarf will exceed 12-13 feet.  Dave Romney’s trees were 20 years old when I visited  his farm in Homestead a few years ago. They had approximately 10 feet of trunk and then the fronds were of course taller than that above it. They do not stay at ace short height it’s just that they grow a lot slower than the Malayan coconuts we typically see here in South Florida.

Brad

Not for a while now. Source was the aforementioned guy in homestead

Hello, I came across this forum in my search. I am looking for a very specific tree. It's called a Samoan Dwarf coconut or Fiji Dwarf coconut (Niu Leka) known to be a "true" dwarf and max out at about 12-13 ft. I have read somewhere on here that there is a guy in Homestead Florida that has them but the email provided on his website is not working and I would prefer to buy from someone more local if possible (We are in Lehigh Acres, FL) or have one shipped to me. I have only been able to find the Green and Gold Malayan (usually only green) but I already have a gold. I know it will eventually get big, plus, I would like to have a true dwarf if I can find one. Let me know if you have them or can get them and the price or if you know someone that would have them that helps also. Thanks for any advice!

Guy in homestead fell off a cliff. Well not literally but won't be getting them from him anymore. Chapman field still has fruiting Fiji dwarf coconut palms but I hear they are getting shut down.

The Fiji dwarfs will likely be hard to source until somebody else fruits them and propagates for sale.

That's a bummer ....... I'm heading back down there Wednesday to get 30 more trees ...... not sure what I will end up with ...... obviously I can only buy what they have available.

After these 30 go in the ground I won't be planting any more mango until after the barns go up ( July/august completion ) ....... wonder if I should buy trees now for later and just keep them in pots until I'm ready? ........ sounds like it will be even slimmer picking if I wait

If you want them this year get them while you can

I have been seeing quite a few people report MC as bland tasting with little flavor complexity. I agree with Cookie Monster, it is a great mango and one of my favorites when eaten at the right stage (before "fully ripe") just the same as I like my Nam doc mai. Eaten at the proper stage it is complex and sweet and tart.

Cotton Candy has been upright and semi vigorous here although not quite as vigorous as Sweet Tart

I think Juliette is a great mango from the somewhat recent releases that are not much talked about.

Santol, although not sure if any will be in season...

Seller was probably right. You'll find out when it fruits  ;)

Ok, but what are the differences betweet achachairu fruit and pacurí fruit?

Besides obvious differences in the fruit, there are differences in new growth, leaves, ends/tips of branches are slightly different as well. When you have new growth pushing out from the tips take photos and post it here. That will help

Hi, I found photos from september 2015:

Nice pics. Even more positive it's not Achachairu now!

Seashore mangosteen can still set some fruit on their own but smaller fruit than usual and without fully developed seed. I know of one lone tree (female?) that does this in Naples FL.
