I have a grafted "Black Star" that had a few water sprouts below the graft that needed to be removed.
So I said "what the heck" I might as well try to root them.
Averaged around 1/8 of an inch in diameter.
Every one of them rooted.. but it took awhile.

If you get impatient with seed germination be prepared for the same with rooted cuttings.
I rooted about a half dozen cuttings last year. They rooted easily... but took about 3 months.
Root-tone into Pro-mix than bagged and placed in the shady area of my greenhouse.

I hope my "Zills" are as good as you say.
I have five "Zill" progeny seedlings I bought from Adam at Flying Fox.
They have started blooming this week in the greenhouse. We'll see how they turn out.
I also have a large grafted "Black Starr" that fruited tremendously this fall/winter and is budding-up again.
Delicious sweet/tart fruit with a grapey taste
And a seedling "Black Star" I bought off of eBay from Hawaii. No fruit from it yet.

You certainly paint a nice picture!
Thanks.
I never saw the parent tree... as I bought the seeds online.
Hopefully some of them will be as nice as yours are.

My mature eurekas are grafted... so I suppose the seedlings could be different than the parent.

I too enjoy that slightly resinous aftertaste.
And since it gets too cold where I live (central Alabama)... they will have to stay in containers.
Last week the temps hovered in the teens at night.
But it's nice and cozy in my greenhouses.
Thanks.

Last year I bought and planted Lolita Suriname Cherry seeds and now I have several dozen seedlings.
I was hoping someone that grows them could share some of their characteristics with me.
They are suppose to be dark fruited.

Thanks.

I noticed a few of my Eureka Japanese Persimmons had seeds in them this year...  so on a whim I planted them.
Noticed the other day they are sprouting.
Any idea what I could expect from these seedlings as far as fruit?
Thanks for the input.

Take a look at some of the different Walipini designs available.
Somewhat labor intensive... but can be very economical.
I know I have more time than money... you may have different resources.
The earthen walls provide great insulation and the glazing for the top can be done cheaply.
If I had the room I would do it.

I accidentally left a couple of potted Dragon Fruit plants outside overnight with temps reaching mid 20s.
So far they look fine.
How much cold can they take?

Thanks.

Anyone recognize this plant?

They are being sold on eBay as Black Surinam Cherry... but I have never seen this leaf type.
Thanks.

How much iron powder per gallon are you using?
I have some 10% Chelated Iron powder I was planning on using this afternoon.
Thanks.

I was hoping Fruitlovers over in Hawaii could give me a little background as to the parentage of the seed he sent me.
I realize most seeds are a genetic crap shoot.
And I will be content with whatever this tree produces.
I was just curious since it started blooming this week.
Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Starfruit Question For Fruitlovers
« on: October 14, 2017, 04:39:35 PM »
Hey Fruitlovers,
A couple of years ago I bought Starfruit seed from you.
Today my Starfruit tree is around 8ft tall and just started blooming.
Assuming that it sets fruit...
Could you give me any background info as to what kind of Starfruit I might expect?
Sweet? Tart? Variety type?
Thanks for your help!

Kevin

Glad to hear so many people giving high marks to Eugenia Uniflora.
I was very impressed by the flavor of my grafted "Black Star" this summer.
It just finished blooming again... must have set hundreds of fruit this time.
It's growing in an 11 gallon pot and doing very well.
Nate came through last night and did no harm to them. Just needed rain!

My Selloi are starting to bloom again... and other than the novelty of it I can't say I'm very excited about them.
Too sour!

My wife says the red Unifloras taste like pine sap...
but she actually likes them.

Mine are about 2 years old with no flowers yet.
They are all around 6 foot tall and need daily watering.
I don't think they need to be any taller than that.
Late November I'll move them into the greenhouse to over-winter.

Looks like my Black Star is winding down it's blooming just in time for the next hurricane.
It should track right over us on Sunday.
We need the rain.

I agree... up for the challenge!
I will eventually put them into 11 gallon containers and prune as well.

It's the little things...
I noticed today one of my Zill progeny and one of my Black Star Progeny are blooming.
I look forward to seeing what kind of fruit they develop.

Anybody growing Pacay Inga feuillei, Ice cream bean trees in containers?
I have 10 trees in 5 gallon pots.
Seeds originally from Hawaii.
Will they set pods in a container?
Thanks.

Kevin

Selloi is definitely sour.
Really too sour to eat out of hand.
Unless you enjoy eating lemons... some people do.
But it is very fragrant.
