Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lolita Suriname Cherry
« on: January 19, 2018, 01:27:55 PM »
Last year I bought and planted Lolita Suriname Cherry seeds and now I have several dozen seedlings.
I was hoping someone that grows them could share some of their characteristics with me.
They are suppose to be dark fruited.

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Eureka Persimmon Seedling
« on: January 18, 2018, 02:09:18 PM »
I noticed a few of my Eureka Japanese Persimmons had seeds in them this year...  so on a whim I planted them.
Noticed the other day they are sprouting.
Any idea what I could expect from these seedlings as far as fruit?
Thanks for the input.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dragon Fruit Frost Tolerance
« on: December 10, 2017, 04:17:13 PM »
I accidentally left a couple of potted Dragon Fruit plants outside overnight with temps reaching mid 20s.
So far they look fine.
How much cold can they take?

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Starfruit Question For Fruitlovers
« on: October 14, 2017, 04:39:35 PM »
Hey Fruitlovers,
A couple of years ago I bought Starfruit seed from you.
Today my Starfruit tree is around 8ft tall and just started blooming.
Assuming that it sets fruit...
Could you give me any background info as to what kind of Starfruit I might expect?
Sweet? Tart? Variety type?
Thanks for your help!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Surinam Cherry
« on: September 20, 2017, 11:20:40 AM »
Black Star Surinam Cherry.
This is the first time it has gone into full bloom. 3 years old - grafted -  in 11 gallon pot -  bought from Plant-O-Gram.
My other cherries bloomed in the winter/spring, in my greenhouse... but this tree is blooming now.
It had a light bloom this summer, but now is budding up in a serious way.
Is it typical for a Surinam Cherry to bloom multiple times through-out the year?
This tree has a large and delicious fruit with a blackberry/grape flavor...  so I want it to bloom as often as possible.
I live in central Alabama if that make a difference. Outside in summer. Greenhouse in winter.

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Bark Peeling on Surinam Cherry. OK?
« on: September 14, 2017, 11:22:15 PM »
I have a grafted "Black Star" Surinam Cherry.
I noticed the other day that the rootstock portion is peeling it's bark in some areas.
I know this is a common trait with Cherry of the Rio Grande as they mature.
Just wondered if this happens to Surinam Cherry as well.
Thanks.

I put out some Espoma Brand Iron Tone Fertilizer this evening around some of my different Eugenias that have had chronic leaf yellowing.
Just curious if others had tried it with any success.
Or had other bits of wisdom to impart.

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Star Cherry
« on: August 11, 2017, 11:39:14 AM »
While eating a Star Cherry - Pitangatuba fruit today I noticed the seed already had a root sprouting from it.
Is this common for Eugenias or Pitangatubas?
Curious if anyone else has noticed this.

As the title states, I've been pinching back the growth tips of my different Eugenias to make them bushy.
Hopefully this will cause them to have more branches and more flowers with more fruit.

Seems to work well on Cherry of the Rio Grande, Pitangatubas, Pitombas, and Suriname Cherry's.

Anyone else have any experience with this technique?

Last year I grew several different Eugenias from seed with varying results.
Cherry of the Rio Grande - Pitangatuba - Suriname Cherry - Grumichama - Pitomba and the like.
Many of them are exhibiting yellowing leaves. Some are not.
Grumichamas seem most susceptible.
Side by side...  some are a healthy green while others are a sickly yellow.
All are grown in containers.
Seems to effect younger plants more than mature.
How can I prevent the yellowing?
Over time I've tried several different amenities.
I've tried fertilizers - organic and/or non. for possible nitrogen problems.
Cotton Seed meal for ph and nitrogen
Chelated iron for mineral deficiencies.
Elemental Sulfur for ph.
I seen no consistant positive results.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Starfruit Leaves Always Closed. Is That Normal?
« on: February 08, 2017, 02:03:29 AM »
I have a one year old seed grown Starfruit tree growing in a pot and it never unfolds it's leaves.
I know it is related to Oxalis which folds it's leaves at night and on cloudy days... but rain or shine, day or night the leaves stay folded on my tree.
It looks to be healthy...
just wondered it someone could shed some light on this characteristic.

Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Chlorosis In Eugenias - Got An Organic Cure?
« on: December 11, 2016, 02:35:31 PM »
I've noticed the new leaf growth in several of my Eugenias is experiencing Chlorosis.
Is there an organic solution to this problem?
Right now they are in containers in my greenhouse -  if that makes a difference.
Thanks.
