Citrus General Discussion / Re: California mandarins in season
« on: March 03, 2017, 11:34:19 AM »
Thanks for the link.  Will have to look into those products.  There is an old citrus orchard down the way from me that is no longer being maintained or watered but is still alive and growing fruit for a decade now.  Im sure it is the cause of all the leaf miners.  Amazing the citrus trees can survive through droughts in a very hot inland location on the side of a hill (no ground water).  Tough trees....

I can ask my neighbor how much he wants for 20 to 25 yards delivered if you want.  He has some good pine mulch that breaks down nicely.  Avocados love it.

I just pull over and ask the tree teimmers if they want to dump it at my place.  Half or so will agree.  It saves them money.  Have got many full truck fulls.  I have a neighbor with tons of it and a dump truck and tractors and all too that sells it and firewood.

Very cool!  8) My bees seem to ignore the avocado blooms and go for the citrus.  Saw someone spray and mild honey/h2o solution on their avocado blooms to attract bees.  May have to try it on a few trees.  Blooms arent in full bloom yet here.  Im surprised TX is ahead of us?

Thanks, can I ask about leaf miners in your orchard?  Is it a problem for you?  How often and what do you spray with?  My trees are flushing now and I think I should spray for miners this year.  I got some spinosid and sprayed once but then it rained.  So I dont know if I should reapply or wait a month or two?

Have you considered a root stimulator plant starter solution?  Might want to use it a few times if its not going to rain.

If its not getting above 40ish Celcius they should take it pretty well.  Mine will take a few days at a time of 42C  they should at least push blooms every spring if they are grafted trees.

« on: February 19, 2017, 11:34:12 PM »
For backpack 4 gallon sprayers just get one that has a hand pump.

If you need to spray more than 4 gallons, you can get 10 or 15 gallon battery pump sprayers that can be put in a quad or truck and driven around.

Better get some DI water and dial that meter in to 7.  Having a hard time believing your rainwater is alkaline.

It seems the storm really hit farther north as you said.  San Diego only had about 0.7 inches of rain and I only had about 0.48.  The rain came late in the evening and really just showers.  The wind was not horrible either, I only recorded gusts of 9 miles per hour, but the weather station is in a protected area, so I imagine some stronger winds occurred. Definitely a blustery storm, but a bit of a dud.

It was pretty gusty on the coastal plains Friday afternoon, the winds were whipping pretty good, hard enough that the rain stung when it hit my face.

27mph winds for the entire friday afternoon here.  We are up on top of a hill so the wind kind of nails us.  Had to stake up all my trees a few weeks ago because of all the wind.

Thanks I will maybe pick up a few more.  Just put in a cherry, peach, nectarine, apple, persimmon, and plum tree.  Have them all on a 20ftx20ft grid and on a 1" valve.  Trying to get all similar type trees on the same sprinkler line.  And there are still 4 or 5 vacant spots...

Went and had a closer look at the tree.  Its covered in blooms.  Should have the little fruits/seeds in a couple months.

The tree doesnt have fruits right now but I think they should come soon.  Not really sure when it makes them but its been a while so they will probably be blooming soon.  The tree looks like it is about to make a lot of new growth.

Yes bronze loquat.  It makes little fruits but they arent really edible like other loquats.  My dog thinks they are good.  The tree is just for looks.  I can send seeds in a few months.

Sweetest peaches you have ever tried.  I have no idea what kind of peach it is.  Im the 2nd owner.  But it comes super early and super sweet orange fuzzy typical looking peches.

My peach tree has been in full bloom for a few weeks.  There are already maybe 100 little fruits set the size of almonds.

Im always amazed how early they are ready.  Will just me 2 months or so from now.

Seems like good weather down there but space could be lacking.   Regarding avocado rootstocks,  I think almost all of them are on zutano rootstock unless otherwise stated.  Some types of avocado cultivars are just more agressive.  Hass and Fuerte seem to geow the fastest here.  And I believe all my trees are on zutano rootstock.  They are all la verne trees or trees from clausons.

We couldn't temp you with that Guanabana?  I stopped by and bought a Reed avocado and a McBeth loquat.  The have been on my list for a while.
Unfortunately I am running out of room in my backyard and the limited spots available will require a lot of work (ie removing old roots from a tree that I removed).  I have to balance the 'that would be cool' with what my wife would actually eat.  She's a bit more conservative in her fruit choices.  That said, I've planted some sapote seeds from a fruit that I bought awhile back.  Hopefully they germinate and then I'll just have to find a spot for them..... I know, a lot easier to just buy a tree, but I'd have a hard time justifying the cost to her.
Indeed, space and growing a fruit tree just to say you did are limiting factors.  I agree that you should enjoy the fruit you eat as well.  I don't have the soil and climate to grow many of the things i would like, but I am slowly adding more fruit trees/shrubs to the landscape to keep my tropical fruit addiction satisfied.  Good luck with the Sapote seeds.  Let us know how they do.  It would be great to see how they mature for you.

Where are you located ?
