Dream annona graft appears to be taking (on gefner), pushing some growth. A few of the scions are looking similarly.


How do you know when possum purple is ready? with panama red, as soon as the green fruit started showing some red, they were good to eat. These are purple from the time they set fruit, so not sure what kind of change I should be looking for. Do I have to wait till they start to shrivel?

I like it too. Seems to be a nice fruit and small plant, with quite a few cultivars. Doubt it would fruit down here, but tempted to try.

I like gifting plants like these for friends and family members that live in cooler climates, partially because I fantasize about showing up around harvest time.

There are dwarf poinciana, but do not know about a dwarf royal. I have a hybrid dwarf, does not create a canopy like the royal.

The seeds of RP that I've seen around here are pretty big, about jelly bean size. They come from large pods that hang from the trees.

fabric pots are great for growing, but they don't look as good as other pots, which usually doesn't matter anyway. Need to be filled properly, can't partially fill them like a solid pot or they fold in.

growing katuk, ginger, turmeric, galangal, and purple potatoes in them, along with a few others, and they are all doing fine.

haven't noticed any root bound plants. roots will sometimes grow through the bottom, but they are super thin and the pots are easily moved, ripping them away with little resistance. I've had roots grow through plastic root pruning pots as well, but they tend to be larger in diameter.

Dang, you are correct Brandon. They were more obvious in the morning sun. Hosed away the ants and aphids, rinse, and repeat. Had to be careful to find the right setting and pressure that gets the bugs but doesn't damage the flowers.

This tree has been largely just left on its own. Gets some of the well fed sprinkler, occasional watering from me, and has been fertilized maybe once in 2 years.  Kind of surprised it is flowering.

My incarnata is huge and blooms like crazy, yet haven't seen a single fruit yet.

So far, Panama Red has been the tastiest I've tried. Good producer too.

Waiting for orgiant, nitida, and laurifolia to flower and fruit.

Okay, thanks! That makes sense, never thought that black sapote and caimito were that similar before, so was surprised to find myself uncertain as to which was which. Going to do some grafting on these puppies and the much larger in-ground tree that is growing well but has yet to flower. Thinking DPI Gold and Juicy Pearl.

So you think they're both caimito? Its certainly possible, but they have to be different cultivars. I was thrown off when realized they both looked bronze on the underside of the leaves. The smaller one is more pronounced bronze to me.

Both trees were neglected for quite a while, needed repotting, a bit dry, with some scale on the leaves. Think they will bounce back nicely with new pots and a lil care.

Anything else anyone can think of that looks a lot like caimito?

Hello everybody.

I could use some help identifying these 2 small trees. One should be black sapote, the other purple caimito grown from a seed from PIN. The marker on one of the tags is unreadable, and the other one disappeared in all the mayhem and confusion associated with hurricane Irma. Thought looking on the bottom of the leaves would clarify, but they look so similar. I am left uncertain. Please share your impressions.

I think the one on left, with larger leaves, is the black sapote, and the one on the right is caimito.

That's good news JR, as my ON is covered in flowers and can't wait to try it. From what I've heard and read, think ON, along with lots of mangoes, grows and fruits differently here than in other parts of the country. So the out-of-state reviews may not apply to us that much, and vice-versa.

The op probably will want to listen to Mark, as their climates and conditions are likely more similar.

If you are buying on that scale, and selling anything, maybe you can buy plants at wholesale prices? Not sure how this applies to nurseries and agriculture, but years ago my wife and I started a small clothing business, obtained a tax id #, and were able to buy materials and other needed items at wholesale.

Another option is eBay. Some sellers might cut their prices down further if you buy in bulk. Some are local to FL.

My experience with grafting is rather limited as well, so someone else should chime in and show the way.

I just found some stalks that were around the same size as the scions received, clipped them near enough to the ends where green was still noticeable on the outside, cut a slit down the middle, and placed a v-shaped wedge of the budwood down into the cut. Then buddy taped them as well as could. Its been about 10 days now, they look good but too early tell if the grafts took. Was advised to wait until it gets hotter to graft, but came across some scions and jumped. hth

I've been told it is best to not cut the panicle, but to pick off the tiny mangoes and leave the panicle intact.

Pine Island Nursery is worth checking out if you want to be able to buy something. Fruit and Spice Park and Fairchild are great for just walking around and viewing beautiful plants.

I'm not sure about letting a rootstock plant dry off before grafting, but do not think it is a problem. I would probably pat with a paper towel if wet, and then graft without worries. Rainwater/watering is definitely not a problem, you do not need to cover it with anything to protect from the rain. Some plants you may want to cover with shade cloth to prevent too much sun.
