Maha Chanok is a much better mango than VP too. Good luck!

Is American Beauty self-fertile? How about Dark Star?

21 Thanks TFF!

Just to be on the safe side, moved in the following plants:

acai palm
jucara palm
purple mangosteen
borojoa

also brought in some cacao seeds that are germinating outside in pots.

leaving one jucara out to see how it fares with the cold spell.

Beautiful tree. That should compliment your mangoes nicely. While it takes a long time for fruit to mature, when it gets going you might have mamey year round.

Mine arrived the other day. Soaked in warm water overnight, and most were sprouted already by morning. thank you Carlos

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best potting soil
« on: December 04, 2017, 11:59:05 AM »
seems like the "best soil" would depend on what you are growing. some of my plants have grown very well in Fox Farms Happy Frog and Ocean Forest, but some have not fared so well and seem to like a different mix. Palms and cacti do well for me in Miracle Grow Palm Cactus Citrus soil mix.

Both of my Indian jujube (Ziziphus mauritiana) are flowering and fruiting right now. Do great without any chill hours. Fruit is delicious and refreshing.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Yay! My first pitangatuba fruit!
« on: November 29, 2017, 06:34:51 PM »
Congratulations! Can't wait to try pitangatuba as well. My plants are about a foot tall, so it will be a while. How was the taste?

111
cooling is just one of the stressors that triggers flowering in many plants, but it seems to be a pretty good one with mangoes

112
I expect a better crop, as will have 4 fruiting size trees this coming year vs 1 last year =)

Improve your odds and grow more trees!

Hopefully the weather and thus ripening will be better in 2018.

Welcome!

Check with your parks and local government. We have tons of free mulch available here from all the storm debris.

If not, talk to some landscapers.

Mission complete. Picked up a 15 gal m casturi today. Big "THANKS!" to Squam256 for hooking me up with this hard to find beauty, and for the boxes of delicious mangoes this past summer. He has a beautiful orchard with all kinds of mangoes and avocados and who knows what else. Can't wait to order more mangoes to compliment our own harvest, and for blue mangoes sometime soon.

...now on to the next missions...

Not sure about the book, but as for palms you might want to consider acai and jucara. Planning on trading out my araca palms for acai and jucara when they grow out enough. Beautfiul trees.  Hoping for fruit one day, but they reportedly are also good for hearts of palm.

thanks!

still looking for plants and sticks of m. casturi, seeds too

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Fairchild Farm Strange Mangoes

That's good to know, as I haven't seen that distinct of coloration in new growth before.

A nice sized tree with new growth colored up like that would be beautiful.

Hello everyone. Looking for an m. casturi plant, or cuttings for grafting. Anyone know where I can find one? Found space for one more large tree, think I'm going to graft kuini and casturi together. Thanks!

This is a little kuini (m. odorata) that a fellow forum member was kind enough to share with me. The color on the new growth leads me to believe that "yes", several of the hybrids pictured must be of kuini mixed with mango.

looks similar to milkweed bugs to me. I would watch to see if they are actually causing any damage. Might even be trying to help you out in some way.
