Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Question about effects of miracle fruit
« on: January 23, 2017, 10:21:34 PM »
Love my miracle fruit tree. Been eating off it for almost 2 years and still not bored. Small tree, easy to grow in container, very productive, and does well in mostly shade. The berries taste good, and change the flavor of just about anything you eat. Grapefruit tastes delicious without sugar. Passionfruit tastes sweet and not sour (I like sour, but sometimes want just sweet). An espresso tastes great with way less sugar. Beer even tastes different. Not everything tastes better, but nothing I have tried has tasted bad with miracle fruit. It's fun to experiment and show to other people. There are different cultivars, not all miracle fruit trees are the same and some are more effective.

Sapdodilla germinates easily for me in a pot of moist dirt, outside in the warm sunlight.

Here is some info on grafting mangosteen onto tinctoria. They actually leave the plant on 2 root systems. Would love to give this route a try.

How is Glenn poor? I've had a wide variety of mangoes, and Glenn is far from poor. hardly any fiber, good flavor, tree has few disease issues.

359
My Fernandez may have been mislabeled as well then, because it looks just like yours

361
looks like both, but agree more like rollinia/biriba

362
finding a tree that is grafted onto additional rootstock (garcinia tinctoria) seems to be the way to go. very few people (if any)  have been able to get fruit off a tree in the U.S. I want to try too

363
...and I'm using FF also, Ocean Forest soil, mixed with good ole dirt and lots of mulch. Used fertilizer after about 6 months or so. Probably the slowest grower of all my passiflora (nitida, edulis, orgiant, laurifolia, panama red, gold, foetida hispida, possum purple, incarnata, etc.). Seems to like lots of water

364
I have one in the ground. Was slow to get started, but has recently taken off (over 10 feet). I thought something was wrong with it for a while, seems very good now. Looking forward to some fruits soon

My Glenn (almost 1.5 years in ground, over 10 feet tall) is covered with bunches of flowers. We had really good fruit during the summer off this tree.

Jane Goodall simplified matters quite well in her question, "How could we have ever believed that it was a good idea to grow our food with poisons?"

I really like the idea of growing different plants together. It just makes a lot of sense. Pests love it when their preferred food source predominates an area. With more diverse gardens and farms, who knows what benefits could be achieved. Also, underneath trees is such a great place to grow low light edibles, plants that help the soil, and that deter pests.

I spray them off my tree with a high pressure setting on the hose nozzle. Works great on small trees. Repeat every couple of days, and they seem pretty well under control

I've  been using osmocote for 2 decades+ on all kinds of plants (potted and in-ground) and have never had any noticeable problems related to it. Everything seems to love it.

My Alano is about 6 feet tall and has flowered and started to set fruit, and then dropped them while very small. Same with the Silas Woods (4.5 feet), except one fruit almost made it to maturity, and then split. Both currently have a few flowers and very small fruit. I would consider them both precocious, with considerable spacing between nodes. Initially the Silas Woods looked different, but now is growing more upright like the Alano. They both have been in the ground since January (coming up on a year) and are growing nicely. Not sure how old they are.

Think I've had Molix, which was nice, and some unknowns from the market. They were all very good. Hoping the ones I'm growing become my favorites.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Introduce Yourself
« on: December 04, 2016, 08:31:28 AM »
Hi everyone. Just joined recently and am happy to have found such a great meeting place for fellow plant enthusiasts. I'm growing a mix of fruit trees in-ground and containers, as well as vines, berries, veggies, herbs, and lots of flowers. Seems there is always room for another tree, despite what my wife says. Zone 10b, so lots of possibilities here.

Of the fruits that I am growing, I have not ever tried many of them. That is changing, and haven't regretted growing anything yet. I just like finding something different.

My old landscaper told me I couldn't graft more than one variety of mango on rootstock, and dampened my dreams of a multi-mango dream tree. Thank you TFF members for paving the way on what was obviously not an original idea. Now I am planning on doing some top work on my Glenn and Nam Doc Mai #4.

Looking forward to learning lots here, sharing info, seeds, and cuttings.

Are there any plants that repel anthracnose? Certainly should be some beneficial fungi that decrease it's ability to get more established.
