I see that Excalibur has nematode certification to ship to Texas, LA, Arizona.

https://www.freshfromflorida.com/content/download/35398/831348/3156_Excalibur_Fruit_Trees,_LLC.pdf

I know Georgia doesn't have the restriction so it doesn't matter but I'm curious do they have separate stocks then for shipping to restricted states?

These plants are going to Canton, GA not California. They would be in a greenhouse (in ground) there. If you can drive a mango across the Florida-Georgia border you should be able to fly one no?

3
Does Excalibur have Pickering, Mahachanok, Kari (Starfruit), and a decent sapodilla in 3 gallon sizes currently? Only interested in those sizes my brother is down there and can take back to me whatever can fit in a carry on/overhead bin bag on airplane.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Cara Cara vs Tarocco ?

OK looks like I will be picking up a cara cara.

One thing to consider is it's easy to get Cara Cara in the grocery store. I've never seen Tarocco blood orange sold anywhere. I have seen Moro at the grocery.

You could plant some guava too, might help and they are tasty.

Things to consider:

Loquat is evergreen and very ornamental if that is something you value
Loquat is the first tree fruit in spring for me in NorCal before cherries, apricots, anything else

Figs taste better (IMO) but there are many things fruiting the same time as a fig.

If you don't have a fig plant one it is worth it (panache, preto, verte, VdB). If you already have a fig I prefer to spread out my season and would plant loquat. They are good fruit.

Very nice. I find Guava is edible when the skin/flesh yields to pressure from your fingernail.

How did your trees make it through winter? Did you go with no roof this summer?

Wow! Very nice, you'll have to share your secret sometime :)

I recommned a violette de bordeaux. It's smaller size if space is an issue. Tastes excellent. Will also 2nd strawberry verte and throw in panache which looks great (striped) and tastes great. Brown Turkey is the least popular among the fig forum growers.

You'll have to do a lot of "expert pruning" then.

My mid-pride (on lovell) is very vigorous. Seems like you had more space not sure why you didn't use. I guess you wanted to pack more trees in?

A north/south orientation is the best for a greenhouse. Your is a little slanted, but should be just fine.

Most recommendations I see are for east/west to have the longest amount of glazing facing south. This would be an advantage in the winter allowing maximum light but a disadvantage in the summer if you have trouble with a greenhouse overheating. Is this why you recommend north/south?

Once threat of frost has past the roof is a liability as you mention by trying to keep it cool. What not try double poly for roof and roll it up in summer?

Was thinking about this project the other day and decided to open the citrus forum to look for an update. Glad I did!
Looks great, keep us posted with project.

Are you planting in ground?
Any heat options going underground?

This looks very nice looking forward to future posts. (Congrats on baby! Have a 3 month old myself :)

Forum -  Thank you for the thread(info)...

If your greenhouse is in SoCal you will have a much easier time because you are zone 9/10. Tuan is zone 7 much cooler in winter. Natural gas is cheaper than electric.

This is a once in a lifetime chance -- they all concentrated in one big immobilized mass. I wanted to paddle out with a bucket of detergent...

Or... Do fried fire ants taste good? They look plump.

"People searching for fire ants on Google are also likely to search for how to kill them, it turns out, so here's the lowdown - squeeze some detergent on them, and the surface tension will be broken and they'll drown."

It would probably be satisfying for the residents plagued by these ants to do that. However even if you killed all the floating ants there are many colonies nearby in non flooded areas and the ants will just spread again once things dry out.

17
I hope everyone rides out Harvey safely.

On a different note. I was thinking about the major pest for all of us Southern states: Argentinean ants (and others like fire ant). On this kind of major flood -- in volume and duration -- I wonder are these ants  being exterminated?

Unfortunately they float and form "ant rafts" until the flooding goes away.

Do mangos get thrip damage? Looks like what they do to my nectarines....

well, i mentioned panache & VdB because they are easily bought at nurseries and taste excellent. If you are willing to root cuttings look for figo preto, only buy from a reputable seller ebay has lots of fake sellers. check forums like figs4fun for legit sources or other good fig varieties you can't find at nurseries.

while we are at it, add two pomegranates, soft seeded types, angel red, parfianka, desertnyi are all good and roots just as easily as a fig.

22
imo namaetz (feijoa) is very good, better than strawberry guavas. i had yellow and red strawberry guavas and the yellow was much better to my taste, neither as good as a true guava like mexican cream which you can grow in so cal.

grow figs, your climate is perfect for it; panache, violette de bordeaux are excellent and easy to find.

Ok thank you both for the advice. Any thoughts on a possible nutrient deficiency? I sprayed some ferrous sulfate on the topmost pale green leaf yesterday as a test... the three top leaves showing crinkling/buckling also have some necrotic spots and translucent/brittle areas so I am guessing a combination of calcium and possibly iron, zinc or sulfur deficiency. I will water the next time with some compost tea and hopefully that will help correct any micronutrient problems.

Try not to kill you vine with kindness, overt treating can be just as bad as neglect.

I'm no avocado expert, but since no one else is helping you... Maybe Holiday?  It's a smaller tree.  Not sure about season though.  There are so many good varieties, it really depends on what you like and more importantly what your growing conditions are like.  I think GEM was supposed to be pretty good as well and be a smaller tree, but you'll need to double check.  The season for GEM is supposed to be different from Reed.

I just planted:
Reed
Pinkerton
Sir Prize
GEM
Holiday
Fantastic

The Fantastic was on clearance at the end of the year at Lowes and I could help myself.  I don't know much about it yet, so couldn't recommend.  The other ones seemed to have a lot of good reviews.

Where did you find a Holiday avo for sale?

It's kind of weird IMO for teachers to pick favorite students. Surprised such a thing exists. We just had "Honor Rolls" kids with good grades got to be on it.
