Very nice! Does Saijo have any significant taste difference compared to hachiya?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: 7HotDates.com -- The Finest Dates in the US
« on: December 03, 2016, 10:02:19 PM »
Got my "Royal Treatment" sampler in today from 7hotdates. Wow...very much improved over typical dried dates at the store. Deglect Noor had a butterscotch taste to them, which surprised me as I have DN in my fridge now from Costco and they taste quite different. Zahidi to me is typical of a store bought date, at least in my sampler. All other varieties are excellent wet pack is the way to go!

Has it made it through a winter yet? My edulis "Fredrick" had no damage last winter (very mild) but my original vines were killed three winters ago during a cold spell of a few days.

The farmers market at the San Jose Flea Market is quite huge if you go on the weekend you will find something. I've gotten cherimoya, sapote, guava, mamey, prickly pear, and others just depends on time of year what is in season.

I have a Mexican Cream Guava in ground here in San Jose and we get below freezing every winter (maybe just to 28, and for a few hours at that). I think you can grow a true Guava in 9b like I am. Plant against a south facing wall for some extra protection.

My neighbor has a giant fuyu. Lucky for me she doesn't like them :) They taste great and are huge compared to regular fuyu. Non astringent

Off topic but is that artificial turf on the patio under the stone? Looks good whatever it is....

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Tropical fruit trees spacing
« on: August 17, 2016, 07:29:28 PM »
Hello,

it may be new for you, but 95% of the population will just ignore your question because you use strange measurement units that 95% of the population of this planet never learned about and not willing to look up and recalculating.

The general rule is 6 metre spacing for a under-story tree species for easy access and usually not touching each other.

I think it's the opposite. He used the common form of measurement that most people on this forum use (most members are in U.S.)

I agree just pack em in there!

There is a feral cat who likes to hang around to nap and fertilize. Maybe I should befriend her.

Really all you have to do is start putting food out for it, maybe a shelter too where you want it to be around most.

60
While on the topic of rats... does the existence of stray/feral cats tend to affect rat activities in orchards?

I can tell you when my neighbors cat was always hanging out in my front yard vegetable garden i had zero damage. The cat disappeared and then the rampage began. I wish I could get feral/barn cat but my dogs have too high a prey drive.

61
If it's only on the new leaves and they out grow it I wouldn't do anything. The whole picture of the guava looks very good. Some spots here and there on leaves is not a big deal.

62
All the people who have gotten sick from it directly ate raw/undercooked snails. Not sure what the concern would be with fallen fruit (unless there was a snail on it and you ate the snail too, but I think most people look at the fruit they pick up and brush it off)

Regarding rabies, seems like it has a very short lifespan (like HIV) outside of the body:
http://www.wormsandgermsblog.com/2012/07/articles/animals/dogs/rabies-virus-survival/

I just cut the piece off that was directly bitten and eat the rest of the fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: minimum distance between avocados?
« on: July 31, 2016, 11:28:31 PM »
My neighbor has two avocados about 8 feet from each other. They are old 30 years plus and quite tall, he never prunes them.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Passion fruit experts, please help!!!
« on: July 26, 2016, 07:59:38 PM »
Agree with Shaneatwell. The fruits get better when the plant get older. However, if you water, fertilize, and add azomite, the fruits will be amazing (big and juicy). My 2 plants took the cold like a champ without any frost die back.

How old are your vines? Last year was a very mild winter. My mature vines were killed by our winter 2-3 seasons ago....

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Little critter destroying my crops
« on: July 12, 2016, 11:38:08 PM »
I think what you are referring to that "curl up" are actually pill bugs aka roly poly

66
Since you have them up on some fruit already I would leave them there and experiment. See what effect it has on the fruit and if it does protect them. I sometimes staple aluminum screen mesh around fruit and that works for the most part, although occasionally if they really want the fruit the animal will chew threw the aluminum mesh! (my issues are rats/squirrels/birds)

67
Impressive....what do you do in the winter? Is there a separate thread on that?

I know people who fruit bananas in San Jose 9b, not sure what types they are though.

69
They will be open:

Open 7 days a week, from
9am to 5pm. Except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

Rent a car and go check it out, or the beach, can never go wrong with the ocean....

This is happening to my Big Jim loquat. Any ideas what this could be? My only guess is sunscald (it's usually on the tops of fruit facing sun) but I haven't read anywhere about loquats getting sunscald. Also, it's only spring and mild (we did have a couple of strange days where it got 95 then went back down to 75)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Jimmy Kimmel Tries Durian, 4/20/16
« on: April 23, 2016, 12:00:45 AM »
No matter what is said in the west the fact remains that billions of people in Asia consider durian king of fruits. That's not about to change due to anything Jimmy Kimmel says.
The only thing that can be concluded from such videos is how little Americans travel outside their own country. Durian has beenvery popular in Asia for hundreds of years, yet most Americans still don't know what a durian is?  :o

I think you are reaching the wrong conclusion. Many Americans travel outside of the country. But of all the people I know who have traveled to asia none of them have tried durian. You are a fruit lover so you are going to seek these things out. Most Americans will see a strange looking fruit in another country and not try it. When I have passionfruit from my vine and have a BBQ I put a bunch out on the table for dessert. Most people pass. It's not that they don't like it they just won't even try it!

They eat living and dead plant material. They used to eat all my strawberries until I put them in a raised bed. I don't see them much now except under mulch as mentioned.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: avocado variety?
« on: March 08, 2016, 02:03:35 AM »
Besides the big box stores (HD, Lowes, OSH) you should have local nurseries that carry CA avocados.

Four Winds: https://www.fourwindsgrowers.com/fruit-trees-vines-and-berries/avocados.html
La Verne: http://www.lavernenursery.com/products/avocados.html

Those two are wholesalers and their avocados can be found at big box stores and smaller retail nurseries. Just call around if you don't have time to browse.

Nice fruit tree list. You need to add some figs they do great in your area!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Disease on my Apple Tree
« on: February 06, 2016, 07:22:14 PM »
Are you sure that's just not last years leaves? Most apples are dormant now (even mine in Zone 9 CA).

Did that come from new growth this year (a problem) or old hanging on leaves (not a problem)?
