Tropical Fruit Discussion / Questions about germination
« on: January 05, 2017, 08:09:49 PM »
I was wondering if there are any special things I need to do to germinate the following seeds.

Rollinia deliciosa and Annona squamosa I assume have regular germination requirements

Same for Hibiscus sabdariffa

For Theobroma bicolor and cacao, my friend gave me directions but I'd be interesting in hearing others.

No idea for:

Lemon drop mangosteen

Garcinia macrophylla

Sapodilla

Aloha
Sechium ticaco it is. Thanks

For the papaya relative ...in my opinion it has only kind of a gummy bear texture when you pop the glob into mouth.  More slimy than firm. The seed like papaya are bigger and spicy , swallowed not bitten.  The pulp is tasty slight sweetfruity. Fruit fall off tree when ripe

Can you elaborate on the Vasconcellea flavor? I've read about them but before I ask if you have any extra seeds or purchase them from the web, I need to make sure they don't taste like papayas.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Cold hardy mangoes
« on: January 05, 2017, 06:26:50 PM »
I have also seen many unprotected trees North of me going into 9a. I think as long as they are established (3-4 years) without a hard freeze you can get away with ia lot more than a young tree because I see plenty of 15-20' trees that have survived freezinh cconditions  (upper 20s to low 30s).

I agree that once established, the trunk can survive very low temperatures below zero Fahrenheit for many hours. About 25 years ago there was a 3 - 4 foot diameter mango tree  growing in the front yard of a home in Highlands County, Florida. So if you want to know how low, check the temperatures  via google over the past about 50 years for Highlands County, Fl.

Some years it would freeze off the limbs so bad no fruit. Some years the temperature would not get as low and it would bear fruit.  I think the tree finally died due to a bulldozer taking it down along with the old wooden house behind it.

Good to know. I don't think it has ever gotten below zero here. My friend grows mango in a similar zone. I'll try to find one of the smaller varieties and use frost cloth when the weather gets rough.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cold hardy mangoes
« on: January 04, 2017, 07:48:49 PM »
I'm wondering what mangoes will grow outdoors in zone 9b. For younger trees, I can always take them in the greenhouse and for larger trees in containers I can bring them indoors, but if I establish one in the ground, I don't want to rely on using frost cloth, although frosts are rare and brief. Regardless, it would be easier to buy a zone 9 hardy cultivar I won't have to stress about.

Looks like the "papaya" is vasconcellea. I'd be interested if you had a couple extra seeds.

Blue ice cream banana, ice cream banana or Java ice cream banana. Do you have these for sale?

The OP is looking for these banana varieties, not selling.

Ahh I see

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Red atemoya?
« on: January 02, 2017, 05:36:23 PM »
I think as soon as A.reticulata genes come in the flavour and quality diminish.I have seen atemoyas that are reddish and from memory Maroochy gold is red brown quite often.I have also seen a few seedling brumby atemoyas with some red on the skin. Getting red skin and the great taste of top atemoyas is the challenge rather than some bland gefner tasting one.

Mike is absolutely correct. You do not want to contaminate any great tasting anona with a.reticulata.....people want to know the taste of 47-18 it's grainy and it taste like arm& hammer

Definitely sounds bad. I should just stick to red squamosa.

You said "In California." I assumed you meant because of temps and weather.

Interesting. The only mangoes I have from seed are polyembryonic.

« on: December 30, 2016, 08:45:31 PM »
You could keep the mango plants as they are since, contrary to popular belief, turpentine mangoes are edible/tasty, but only if they're left on the tree to ripen. Regardless, grafting would be better.
