Tropical Fruit Discussion / fruit fly and jaboticaba?
« on: March 25, 2018, 09:09:58 AM »
Hi, some months ago Adam S. wrote that jaboticabas are not affected by fruit fly because of the thick skin

So I planted many of them (I would did it anyway! I love the plants and the taste of the fruits) thinking I will eat any fruit without worms in the future

So I ask another jaboticaba growers here: did you ever saw a worm into a jaboticaba fruit?

for sure different species or varieties will be more or less resistant...

look at this

Tropical Fruit Discussion / annonas to ID!
« on: March 23, 2018, 04:32:17 PM »
Hi, can you believe that, at Misiones they call CHIRIMOYA to the Biribá?

the other fruits seem to be atemoya, araticú (maybe rollinia sylvatica) and so on... the woman said that the araticú she likes it more than biribá...

First of all: thanks Miguel for the seeds!

This is a new species that I had the pleasure of tasting today, it was cultivated from seeds for 3 years and gave its first fruits when the tree reached a meter and 30 cm high during this summer.

You can see in that photo two fruits on the right on top of a leaf and to compare I place two red strawberry guava fruits on the left. The flavor is different to this one, being more lemony and stronger. I would say that it is both more acidic and sweeter: deeper. The skin tastes like lemon guava and I enjoy eating it more than most of the skin fruits I know.

Other notable differences are: the pulp of the arazá serrano is yellowish while that of strawberry guava is white, the consistency of serrano is harder and less damaged when falling to the ground, perhaps less perishable but I doubt it. It is a taller tree that supports up to -7 or -8 º C, more rare and it should be growed to save it from extinction.

Hi, I received this plant from a collectionist 4 years ago labeled as psidium guyanense.

august 2014:

january 2016:

2017

It grew up fast in a pot with no problems, then I planted it in a hot and sunny place at my garden and it fruited for the first time the last year, 24 march 2017

1.6m tall

http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=23200.msg277951#msg277951

But it had only one fruit, it was green and with 2 fruit fly worms (not properly ripe). Anyway it was tasty, 12º Brix.

march 2018

I dont have a refractometer now, but its sweetness is better now, I suppose something like 16º Brix or so.

The size is really big for an "arazá" that is a sister of the strawberry guava

It was very difficult to get it properly ripe here because of the fruit fly worms (and maybe because of our cold nights? 13º C), but I got some good fruits, as for instance this one:

As you can see, the bigger fruits are yet to come and I love this species: it tastes very complex, like a mix of pineaple, pear, apple, guava, strawberry guava, banana, plum and so on (I gave it to taste to some friends and family and they got all those flavours of different fruits, I agree) if properly ripe. If not properly ripe, it can taste to tomato or some vegetable, and it smells like an unripe banana.

When ripe It smells like it tastes. The perfume is not like a guava, nor like strawberry guava, it is not strong but I love it. Some parts of the skin are tart and some are sweet.

no fruit fly thanks to the traps

one of the best fruits I ever had, it reminded me guaviyú, oranges and jaboticaba, acid and sweet

Hi, in this first too photos, they look like coronata or trunciflora to me:

And in the next photo the new growth seems similar to red hybrid (the color and by the remarkable ribs)... but I dont know, the leaves are more elongated than my red hybrids... so... ¿?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / inga spectabilis sprouting
« on: February 11, 2018, 11:05:05 AM »
I am very happy about this:

I assume that they will prefer some shade now when they are small, or half shade, not full sun ...

maybe I should enter them in my house in winter, since they are quite tropical? Will I do as I do with guanabana?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / I made an uvaia mermelade
« on: January 24, 2018, 03:49:45 PM »
During these weeks I harvested approx 60 fruits of uvaia from different trees, it was not such a big crop but it was enough for me to make tests: the juice has a similar flavor to passion fruit, although maybe a little less strong ... the fruit opens and gives off a aromatic juice that, with sugar, is very good (you even dont need to include the rest of the pulp and skin).

Then I kept the fruits in the fridge to make a jam that was extremely delicious and has nothing to envy to the best jams on earth. The flavor reminds me a bit of the tropical guava but also has shades of passion fruit, orange, ubajay and mango. I would say that it is clearly tropical, strong and interesting. The color is also attractive because it does not remain brown as it happens with many other fruits, but orange.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / New jaboticabas, 1.5m, 5 feet tall
« on: December 19, 2017, 03:59:24 PM »
Hi

I buyed these "big" (for Argentina) jaboticabas, 1.5 m tall (5 feet tall) or so.

I think they are myrciaria trunciflora (more likely to me) or myrciaria coronata, what do you think?

The seller wrote that the mother tree is more than 5 meters tall and the fruit is not so acid, so I think it could be sweet and very good. They should be 6 years old and maybe will flower soon!

17
Hi, the tree is 4 years old or so, 4m high, it is flowering for the first time... some flowers just "die" and onthers have fruits. I didnt hand pollinated them

Why does it works?

maybe we have some interesting bug pollinating them?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / tasting a "bad" ubajay for the first time...
« on: December 14, 2017, 12:38:51 PM »
A few weeks ago at Carlos Thays Botanical Garden I found ubajays on the ground and, as the perfume did not pleased me, it did not seem a good idea to eat them ... I barely bit one and it was very acidic, but other people wanted to taste them and they liked them, to this day I did not understand them...

Yesterday a friend harvested ubajays from their trees and he did not liked them either, so I asked him to give me some fruits to try: it did not seem so bad to me, they just have a very strong and acid flavor but there are other varieties that should be clearly superior, good and sweet (Miguel Pt and a nursery woman form Entre Rios).

For now I hope that my ubajays bear some fruit to see which one is the best - maybe I have the sweet variety given that a tree is from Entre Ríos and the nursery woman who sold it to me said that she has a good variety, with medlar (nispero) flavor. Then I will graft the trees of the acid variety with branches of the best variety, or perhaps I will leave them like this because I think that these acid fruits have a complex and interesting flavor tone to prepare ice cream ... in fact an overripe fruit had a much better perfume , similar to that of the uvaias, and I imagine that flavor prepared with a lot of sugar and I think it's fantastic for jams, sweets, candies ... it's a caramel-like taste but with something strange, with a strong "alcoholic" touch.

But if I try to ear them raw, natural: I dont like them.

I added some sugar and the almíbar from them was good

PD: my friend wants to kill his trees... hahaha, he will give them to me as a gift

It surprises me that it is almost exactly like a normal cherry but with a myrtaceae touch!

Hi, I dont know if call them spine or thorn (they dont hurt you), but I dont have another jaboticaba species that has this little spine-like at the tip of the leaves. Similar to guaviyú too, but softer.

It looks like grimal or sabará or coronata, but I dont know what is it in fact... the seller (from Misiones) of these seedlings told me that it bears big fruits, that is the only data I have!

23
The smell is similar to psidium cattleianum but I like it more (now that I have both, this smells sweeter), the flower is bigger (as the leaves and fruits!)

The last year we got just one fruit and I didnt noticed the flowers, now I know how nice they are :D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tasting more jaboticabas (video)
« on: October 10, 2017, 08:28:03 AM »
The fruits were very tasty, sweet and acid, not too acid, like a mix of grapes, guavas and plums (but they were harvested a bit unripe and they traveled for 4 days so I think they were in the starting stage of a fermentation... they had a "wine" taste too). Soft to the touch.

To me, they dont have the green crown in the apex that should have a myrciaria coronata fruit, maybe they are sabará...

My english is not too good, I never speak english! I sound like an arab (dont have nothing against them).
