Tropical Fruit Discussion / med fruit fly and guava doubt
« on: March 18, 2016, 11:46:15 PM »
Hi, I have a guava fruit that I think it has fruit fly worms inside, or eggs maybe, not yet worms... it fell unripe and I would like it to ripe more... but if it has worms, it will rot...

there is no solution for this? I have some crazy ideas:

what about if I freeze the unripe fruit to kill the eggs (would they die?) and then let it ripe? would it ripe if frozen before?

what about if I put it into the microwave and burn the eggs/worms (and the fruit... but not so much to "kill" the posibility that it will ripe), would it ripe then?

Hi, today I found a fallen fruit of psidium australe ("araçá do folha marrom" http://www.colecionandofrutas.org/psidiumaustrale.htm), a myrtaceae from the north of Argentina and South of Brazil, it was into the pot of the 1m tall tree, that has many fruits on it and it's flowering and flowering again.

It had fruit fly's worms inside, but the flavour was so good, even the skin is tart but I liked it. It remembered me to guava jam, acid and sweet.

It's like eating the excelent perfume of a tropical guava (that, in my experience, tropical guavas doesnt taste like the smell and they are not acid). In this case, it tastes just like it smells, wonderful and acid.

I gave it to try to my brother and he really liked it too (he said it's similar to strawberries). I think it's a fruit that could be a comercial crop easily.

I like tropical guavas, strawberry guava and yellow SG, but this one to me is "better": it has de acidity of a strawberry guava and the taste of the smell of the tropical guavas, so to me it's just perfect.

I read the report from Miguel.pt some months ago and I agree it's a keeper (http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=18484.msg230765#msg230765), but the taste, in my case, is similar to the tropical guavas (in the sense that it tastes as the smell of them)

It's a bit strange to me that Helton didnt wrote anything about its good taste.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / natal plum first tasting
« on: February 21, 2016, 08:50:20 AM »
The tree is potted  into a 30L pot.

Today I tasted our first ever natal plum fruit, there is another one coming in some weeks, but this was fine, an interersting flavour, sweet, juicy, acid and tart, I would say it's like a mix of apple, strawberry and loquat. I dont know if it was really ripe (it had some latex), it could be even more ripe and maybe sweeter, but it was good and  it is a fruit I would eat any day.

I like this species because it can resist our frosts, so I will plant it into the food forest as soon as possible (and hope it would not hate the rains of the winter...)

Thanks Steven Silva from Portugal for giving us the seed 3 years ago (nov 2012)!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / uvaias on february
« on: February 09, 2016, 11:28:58 AM »

The tree produced just a few, but juicy and sweet.

Would it need some cross polinization with other uvaia and/or other eugenias to produce more fruits? it's a 3m tall tree, 8 years old or so...

82
Today I opened a jackfruit and was unripe. It's a shame because it is very difficult in my country get this fruit and do not want to waste it. What should I do to take advantage of it?

Does it ripen once cut? 70% of the fruit's has skin and would have no problem in leaving out of the fridge to ripe...

What can be done with the unripe almost white pulp?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / first annonaceae (biribá) flowers ever
« on: January 09, 2016, 05:59:09 PM »
Hi, a biribá from Misiones that was planted 1 years ago at the front yard (no frosts) is flowering for the first time... these are our first annonaceae flowers, as I grow 8 or 9 species from that family.

The plant is small, 1m tall and it is recovering from the winter: all leaves fell down and the 3 lateral branches died.

I was worried about this plant because it does not looks so good, and it sprouted very late on summer, growing slower than any other poted biribá I have at the greenhouse... but: flowers should be a good sign, dont you think? It's shaded by an almond tree, maybe I should give it more sun...

Now I dont know if let it fruit or remove the possible fruits so the tree could be stronger for the next seasons...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / some rare myrtaceae fruiting
« on: December 25, 2015, 08:54:56 AM »
Hi, our myrcia selloi is fruiting for the first time, the fruits will be small, but maybe good?

Psidium australe and psidium guineense (just 20cm tall and 16months old) are doing it...

australe:

guineense:

I have no photos (they are in the house of my parents), but murta, anacahuita, syzygium oleosum and eugenia uruguayensis are fruiting for the first or second time too. Anacahuita was very small the last year, but very rare taste and good.

This is not too rare, but the uvaia is flowering like crazy and the fruits were the best I ever tasted the last summer, so I hope they will be nice on 2016 too.

The smell of the flowers is my favorite

Tropical Fruit Discussion / flamboyant (delonix regia) edible seeds?
« on: December 13, 2015, 09:28:41 PM »
Hi

I got one flamboyant tree and I am thinking about planting it at our backyard, it's beautiful and I read on the net that the pods are edible... but

'The pods are edible and have good potential as a dietary protein source for humans and livestock (Webb et al., 1984; Grant et al., 1995). The leaves (with 39.5% protein) provide nutritious fodder and browse for livestock.' (http://www.hear.org/pier/wra/pacific/delonix_regia_htmlwra.htm)

But, do you ate them or do you know some one that ever ate those seeds?

Or... would it be wise to trust in the HEAR.org site?

There is also some info at:

http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/4591#b

"they are also edible once boiled. But beware; raw seeds contain glycopeptides (phytohemaglutinin) which causes vomiting, diarrhea, sleeping and tachycardia, so you are warned!"

Tropical Fruit Discussion / planting macadamia, what is the best method?
« on: December 09, 2015, 12:11:12 AM »
Hi, I bought 3 macadamia trees, 3 years old and 80cm tall, and I am learning about the species. Our trees are not growing now, and I can see brown tiny  sprouts (maybe burned), as they would like to sprout some weeks ago, but could not do it.

We are entering in summer and the sun here is very hot, we are having a rainy season too, nice.

The seller told me to plant the macadamias below other trees, and give them just 5 or 6 hours of direct sun per day.

Would it be good? Is this the best method?

I bought inga marginata and inga uruguensis to serve as support trees, they should grow taller, but maybe it's a good idea too.

I could plant one of the macadamias bellow a pear tree, 3m tall, it will have a lot of sun light because the pear tree is young, but, in winter, it will be almost full shade. I also could plant another one bellow a plum tree at my parents house, but it would have very few direct sun light (would it grow too slow? never?).

I also could plant another one at the front yard: a lot of hot sun from 2pm to 8pm, but shade on winter.

« on: November 05, 2015, 08:53:58 AM »

Tropical Fruit Discussion / another more jaboticaba to ID from Misiones ...
« on: November 04, 2015, 10:17:34 PM »
To me, it's similar to my myrciaria cauliflora... what do you think?

91
I bought them at a supermarket: it's the first time a chirimoya is being sold here at Argentina, in a supermarket, called "La Anónima".

It was very very good: acid, juicy and very sweet, much better than the ones I tasted in the past (from a greengrocery, they were from Perú). These ones are being cultivated at Argentina, I dont know from where province, maybe Tucumán.

I would say the flavour is similar to a mix of plum, lemon and custard, I am totally in love with them and hope my planted 1m tall tree grow fast this spring/summer :)

The ones with bumps where better than those without them.

92
By the way: how do you call it?

is this species soooo precocious for you too?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / araça-una icecream
« on: August 30, 2015, 11:12:40 PM »
"Alguém conhece o melhor picolé do mundo? Lhes apresento o picolé de Araçaúna do Ajellso. Essa marca é do Espírito Santo e eu só encontro essa belezura por lá, por isso toda vez que viajo para terras capixabas, eu não resisto. Ele é feito com essa fruta deliciosa que dá um sabor misturado de azedo e doce para o picolé. É o melhor que já tomei na vida, sério! Ganha até do chicabom, o segundo melhor! hahaha - "

she said that this icecream is the best of the world...

did you tasted that fruit? made ice creams? juices? natural?

today I was watching our two 40cm tall trees we have (2 years old or so), and crushed some leaves: the smell was so good! so I think that it will be a very good fruit

Tropical Fruit Discussion / ID: a rare fruit tree from Misiones
« on: August 10, 2015, 10:45:37 PM »
see:

http://www.huertasurbanas.com/2015/08/10/identificar/

she said (translation from spanish)

"I was given this plant in Misiones, El Dorado. The sr that gave me told me it was called "gift". He said also that it produces a sweet edible fruit that the birds love. Now it is growing something on the tips, they dont seem to be fruits ... but neither leaves.

Someone knows what tree is it?"

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Eugenia? to ID
« on: August 07, 2015, 02:21:50 PM »
Hi, the tree is not mine, neither the photos:

"ES UN ARBUSTO QUE MIDE 1 METRO DE ALTO (es igual a la eugenia uniflora pero las hojas son más delgadas, esa es la única diferencia del arbusto) LA FRUTA ES ROJA, REDONDA, POSEE UNA SEMILLA CENTRAL, LA PIEL ES BRILLANTE, DELGADA, DE TEXTURA POROSA. EL SABOR ES ÁCIDA Y DULCE, MUY AGRADABLE."

It seems to be similar to eugenia repanda, but I see that the leaves are different...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Winter guavas, no fruit fly :-)
« on: August 03, 2015, 09:59:07 AM »
Hi, they are less sweet than in summer, but I liked them and the fact that the fruit fly is not around here, is great.

Now I think: maybe I should remove all the flowers and/or  fruits from summer and just let the tree produce in winter? This could be a good method. And maybe when the tree gets bigger it could produce sweeter fruits in winter.
