Thanks, Oscar.  I am not positive that what I bought from Excalibur is the Whitman Fiberless....but from your description, I sure hope it is.  Murahilin or Rob, next time you guys are up there, could you ask Richard whether it is or isn't?  Thanks.  The best guanabana that I have previously had was from Noel (FloridaGreenMan).  It had fiber but was large (like all of his creations) and had a great flavor. I think the tree died from hurricanes or cold or both. You mention shy bearing......well, at this point I'll be happy to settle for some shyness........just not complete "barrenness."

I sent them both e-mails last week.  Pugluvr (Nancy) responded and thanked me.  She's been inactive on GW for a while also.....not sure why. I hope all is well with her.  Mango Kush (Bryan) has not repsonded.  He's been MIA for quite a while now.  Again, hoping all is OK with him.

Down in our neck of the woods, where Sleepdoc and I live, I haven't seen a mango bloom scorching freeze in the time that I have been growing.....that would be since 1989.  Much more likely to happen is that the blooms open and because of the temps being too cold, the pollen isn't active.  I forget the horticultural science as to why this happens, but I was taught that temps below 60F will severely limit, if not totally prevent, mango pollination.  In the last two years, when I had temps at my house below freezing on several occasions, I have seen no bloom loss with temps as low as 28F albeit for a relatively short period of time.

Madame Francis is not vigorous at my house.  But, it was a relatively recent planting and is planted in a location where it gets shade about half the day.  So I am not sure you can draw any conclusions about growth habit from my experience. It is very disease resistant and fruits fairly heavily without spraying.  So that is a plus. On the negative side, it does not do much in the way of gaining color upon ripening.

That's a good point, Alexi.  Adam's fruits do have a look like A. montana and do not look like the conventional A. muricata...not at least like the ones I have seen.  Adam....was the fruit you got at Robert's similarly formed...without spikes?  I wonder where they got their fruit from.....any idea?

Adam:

How was the fiber content of your fruit.  I am not a big fan of seedy fruits and fiberous fruits are not that far behind on my list of prefer not to wrangle with fruits.  I have had trees that were supposedly seedlless (from Excalibur) and a fiberless one (also from Excalibur) to try to avoid my aversions.  The seedless one also turned out to be fruitless (and thus was not mis-represented, I guess in a way). It fruited one time in the 17 years I had it.  The fruits never matured fully dropping off at about half maturity. It died last year in our record cold waves that we encountered in the previous two years.   The allegedly fiberless has not fruited as of yet.  So the jury is still out.  My luck....the fiberless tree will either also be fruitless or the fruits will be tasteless.

I thought Noel, a//k/a FloridaGreenMan did a safari with a couple of my other friends to Honduras about 10 or more years ago.  Noel, was it Honduras or Costa Rica?  I'm thinking it was Honduras.  I know they encountered some really good Pulasan there.  They bought  a few.....ate them as they left....then went back and cleaned the guy out of everything else they had available.  They were that good.

Good memory, Alexi.  I did post this shot of Noel back on GW some time back.  These mangoes are obviously large and their best characteristic is that they are large.  Probably excellent for chutney and the like. Unfortunately, they are  not all that good for eating out of hand.

Madame Francis is for sure fibrous.  The flavor is actually pretty good.  My friends from Haiti think it is the best flavored mango in the world.  There is obviosly the old "what they've known from their childhood" prejudice at work here.  Similarly, many Jamaicans love East Indian. I grow both but honestly don't eat them myself. I get far more enjoyment giving or selling these fruits to the folks that really love them then in eating them myself.

Jf...your decription of atemoyas as being "somewhat grainy and leaving you with an aftertaste" is pretty contrary to my experience with atemoyas.  I have eaten Gefner (my favorite), African Pride, Rosendo Perez, Lisa (48-26), Page, Petch Pakchong, Priestly and Bradley.  Of these, I would classify only Lisa (48-26) as inferior. The others were smooth with no stone cells to speak of (which cause the gritty texture you find in sugar apples) and I have never encountered any negative flavors in any of these.  Which specific atemoyas are you referring to when you describe them in this way?

There is a church located conveniently across the street.  Coincidence?  I'll be there volunteering Sunday from 10am to 1:30pm at the Tropical Fruit & Veggie Society table should anyone be there at that time.  Don't be shy.  No petting offered.

Warren.....what do you volunteer doing at the church?

I had four of the Juan pulasan seedlings.  I gave one to Warren.  I hope his is still alive and kicking.  All three of the remaining plants died a slow and inglorious death at the hands of cold weather.  :'(

One of the contenders for winner in this category would have been Sleep from the GW Forum.  He stabbed his thigh with a nice new grafting tool, sending him to the ER for stitches.  Speaking of which, I need to drop him an e-mail to let him know about this new forum.

As for me, my worst injuries have involved a slight slip of the grafting knife carving a nice slit into my thumb.  Or then there was the time that my back went out after trying to lift a large stump.  Or maybe it was the time that I got into a hornet's nest and got stung about 15 times by the nest's unhappy residents.  I have had the obligatory standing a fire ant mound enjoyment, of course.  I am sure there have been others over the years, but the mind tries to forget pain.

Beautiful fruit, Felipe, but from my experience, they look like red atemoyas....not reticulatas.  I would suspect they are some sort of hybrid if they have any reticulata in them at all (I'm not saying that they don't) but they clearly favor the atemoya side of the breeding...at least that is what it looks like to me.

According to Sheehan, it was taken down last night.  I guess it violates their rules.  I was wondering if the poster...Patrick, will be banned from GW. I guess we'll see.

The best thing and the worst thing about durian is that it keeps on giving.  For many hours after ingesting the darling fruit, it repeats on you like nobody's business.  If you love the flavor......you're good to go for the rest of the day.  If you don't.......you're screwed.  It will be hours before that wierd horrible flavor starts to fade away.
