Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Another Pickering Mango thread...
« on: July 25, 2013, 04:20:04 AM »
Nancy, My Pickering is still holding 5 fairly large mangoes and they still haven't shown signs of readiness.
Prior to the late bloom that produced these mangoes I'd lost a lot of the foliage on the top of the tree. But it is starting to push out some new growth again so I expect that will all fill back in. It is growing in a 25gal. pot. I am going to upsize it to a 50gal after I harvest those mangoes!! (those are Jackfruit seedlings in the background)

Big Congrats!!

Thank you Thera and Scott.  It's in large 20 or 25 gallon pot.  I'm still debating whether to put it in the ground or not.  Best of luck on your grafts Scott.
Great job!!! I just germinated a few Jaboticaba seeds that are about 3 inches tall with 3 sets of leaves....I hope some day to get to where you are!! Congrats

Mind sharing a Halley's Comet cutting or two? I've been looking to get some everywhere.

Thanks
thao
If you make it really easy for me I surely will....between work and family obligations I am usually so overwhelmed. So if you could send me a package to put the cutting in already labeled with your mailing address and postage, I will put the cuttings in that package and send it right back to you.

MarinFla,

Congrats beautiful looking fruit. I bet it taste as good as it looks.
Thanks! I've eaten a few smaller ones already...I am surprised at how sweet they are compared to others I have tried (not mine). I can't wait to rest the brix level to actually quantify it.

My trellis of dragon fruit explodes with new flowers every night

And my first super big Halley's Comet for this summer. Time to get out the refractometer to test the brix level.

Marin-

I think I got some Physical Graffiti cuttings from you, didn't I? If so, they are doing well. I posted some pictures of my trellis set-up over on the dragon fruit thread. (No one is looking at it and I'm just shamelessly fishing for compliments now.)
Yes I did :) I will have to go look at the pics. Mine are going absolutely nuts flowering and fruiting right now.

I guess the cup of coffee grounds I dumped onto the top of the soil in my potted Miracle Fruit plant may be the reason my plant is fruiting like mad. I have picked well over 125 ripe berries already and it's flowering and fruiting still. I find at least 10 ripe berries every few days and I have been freezing them.

I believe freezing miracle fruit deactivates the miraculin, in other words they ain't gonna work miraculously after freezing.

Oscar,

You're wrong about that. The miraculous works great after freezing. Maybe you're thinking of freeze-drying.
They are just as amazing frozen as fresh....I have tested this theory. There is no loss of potency at all.

Nancy, I took these pics today for my sister to see on pinterest.
The Lancetilla mangoes are really getting bigger every day but have a ways to go
and I think the Pickering are getting close.

I think it's been a wacky mango season for many of us, while I have Bailey's Marvel still holding fruit, which is always one of my earliest mangoes, my later mangoes have pretty well finished up. Just very strange at least here.
I still have fruit on my PPK, Glenn and Pickering which are supposedly earlier season
and on my Keitt and Lancetilla which isn't unusual for late season varieties
I also have a handful of Glenn left on one of my trees, while my Keitt are all finished.
Wow I am surprised. My Keitt tree has about 2 dozen+ mangoes still hanging on it.

« on: July 14, 2013, 02:03:32 PM »
Haus there are a few species of flying foxes that get ripe fruit and birds often follow the next day cleaning up damaged fruit.Bugs have superficial fruit bites at times but can stunt the plants by biting the growing tip. There are no insects that routinely cause internal fruit damage. The papaya fruit fly was eradicated from NQ after a huge baiting program about 15 years ago.
I wish they had done that here....the papaya fruit fly here is so bad that I am chopping down my papaya trees. Not worth it :(

I'm thinking of going tomorrow but it's a long drive and a lot of money... With gas and food it's a $100, so I want to make sure it's worth it!

How was the mango tasting?  That's what I'm most interested in. Did they have good specimens and lots of varieties?

As for the mangoes for sale, I'm not interested at all in Mexican supermarket crap.  What varieties of Fairchild grown? Were they all crazy priced?  $5 for a small mango is nuts, even if it is lemon zest.

Sorry I didn't see this earlier but IMHO the tasting room was worthless. They only had 5 varieties... Palmer Alaulfo, Kent, Haden and one other. I had the voting paper and pencil in my hand and threw it back on the table on my way out because it would have been a waste of time to fill out. All of the mangoes on the tables were cut up into pieces the size of the frozen carrots in a bag of mixed vegetables, the mangoes were mushy/over ripe and lacking flavor. I have had all those same varieties before and the tasting table was a poor representation of how those mangoes should have been. The ataulfo mangoes they were cutting up at the mango stand were even much better than in the tasting room. I hope mango newbies who don't have a frame of reference don't think that those varieties are actually really like that. Disappointing-  1 out of 5 stars :(

I went inside for the lectures at 12:50pm and stayed through the end of Jeff Wasielewski's lecture and must have missed the storm completely. It was bright and sunny when I came out. The only signs that it had rained were the mud bogs everywhere that were lots of fun to navigate. I wasn't planning to buy any trees so I was kinda happy they didn't have any Manilita's left when I finally made it over that way....or I may have been tempted. I was somewhat disappointed in the mangoes they had for sale. Mostly all Mexican mangoes you can buy at the grocery store with the same product stickers on them (even Mexican Keitts!?!) and the selection of Fairchild grown mangoes were not diverse. Overall it was a beautiful day weather-wise. When I was making my drive back to Deerfield the weather got really ugly at about Sheridan Street/Hollywood and continued to typhoon for 20 miles and the rain/lightening hasn't stopped yet!!!

Rain started at about 1pm. FTBG is an amazing must see place!
Picked up two more Angies. And bought some select fruit from Dr. Campbell's sons; Juicy Jupiter, Big Saturn, and Martian Pride mangos. Also got some Lemon Zest that they had hidden under some Ataulfos.

I was fairly surprised they were selling those Lemon Zest mangoes for $5 each considering they were really small.

I have been using a mixture of insecticidal soap, copper and dynagrow foliage pro

I am planning to go Saturday too. Here is a recent picture of me from my cruise last month so you can all recognize/find me in the crowd.
and I might wear the same outfit since it will be really hot (and possibly rainy) out!

The reason I mentioned removing the leaves, was to prevent any possible contamination to the new leaves.  if you pug and remove all leaves, you kind of remove any "food source" if its a bacteria, bug or fungus. and prevents it spreading to the new growth.
on the other hand if its a virus, than its probably a gonner.
Removing the leaves won't help. That black stuff actually starts at the base of the new twig growth and spreads its way up to the leaves and causes the leaves to die then the twig follows. It almost looks like a black shellac coating.  I have this going on with a seedling that I am growing. I had initially thought it might be due to damage I caused to the tap root when I transferred  to a bigger pot. It did improve a bit when I fertilized it. I have it on the side of my house away from my other trees and I will let nature take its course. We'll see how it goes. It had a nice growth flush at the end of May and it did well. Then I noticed it happening again a few weeks ago. None of my other trees have had anything like this so it my not be contagious. Somewhere up this thread are the pictures I posted of the same mystery disease.

Peach Cobbler? Are they selling those?

While I was fruit shopping at Excalibur today Rob was kind enough to tell me they had just gotten some of these, as well as some Ugly Bettys.

(Harry, please don't be too hard on us. These days addiction is considered a disease.)
I tried Ugly Betty a couple of years ago before it officially got its name and I thought it was a really good tasting mango, juicy, fiberless and the coloring was pretty. But I am out of room!
