Thanks for replying. Going to put these notes in my journal.

Absolutely!!  If you have time to prep your scions by cutting the branches as Simon stated, they'll do much better with those swollen buds. Also I had forgotten to state that the water you used should be cool to warm. Never cold or hot as you WILL Kill your scions!! Good luck Frank!

& Good luck Marc!!! Im hoping that you both are very successful in your next attempts at grafting!!! 😁 ;D

Thanks everyone!! I've been noticing the same thing stated by others about the parafilm & have not yet invested into BuddyTape yet.

Thank You guys!  :D ;D Har helped teach me how to prep the scions "out in the field"

Please elaborate!

I went from 0% success about three years ago, to 90% success 2 years ago, to 0% success last year. Found my knife was the main culprit (bad sharpening).  I switched to the bics razor a month ago, now back at 30%. Hoping to get better.

So Har showed/told me how to keep the branches/limbs healthy until I was able to get them home & wrap them in the parafilm. 1st any plastic bag or garbage bag will be needed. & 2nd a source of water. Then choose your branches for grafting, cut them down, & either completely drench or submerge in water, & then place your branches in the plastic bag.(darker bags work better for keeping direct sunlight off of them.) Whenever you get ready to wrap your scions make sure to take the branches out of the bag, cut the leaves off & dry the budwood off with papertowels & let them dry for 15mins. before wrapping up the budwood for grafting. I've then sanitize my grafting Knife with rubbing alcohol and now I have everything ready for grafting.

Greetings,

I'm interested to know from any members if anyone is grafting any new mango varieties and the type of rootstock your using. I would like to know your thoughts on using a Valencia Pride as rootstock. I am also thinking of cutting back a 3 year old Haden and grafting a Pina Colada scion and Coconut Crème scion to it.

Welcome to the forum!! I just attempted some more top working yesterday with SweetTart onto my hatcher mango tree. Few days before that I also attempted to try top work Dot on my Carrie Tree. I use anything available! Especially vigorous varieties like VP!! Sounds like really great ideas for top working as stated by Sayyid, good luck!!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Experience ordering from FloridaHillNursery?
« on: August 08, 2017, 03:02:50 PM »
Has anyone ordered banana cultures from FloridaHillNursery? They seem to be the only place that I can find the 3 varieties of bananas I'm looking for & thought I read in a similar post about their plants not being properly labeled from someone else's experience?? Tried going through going-bananas.com but they didn't have the varieties- Dwarf Namwah, Blue Java/Ice Cream, & Praying Hands.. anyone growing them & have pups? (Looked on Craigslist with no luck) any help is appreciated  ;D😁

Thank You guys!  :D😁 ;D Har helped teach me how to prep the scions "out in the field" & then I repeatedly watched Pete Kanaris's new Grafting video with Dr Campbell & finally got cleft grafting. Now I want to get veneers to take lol..

Simon, I took your advice & removed the old parafilm as it had holes throughout & I didn't want to take any chance of harming it with all the rain we had yesterday.. especially didn't want any issues at the graft point with water getting in, so I resealed with graft tape. See -

Sayyid, I absolutely know what you mean brotha!!! Been waiting to actually getting it down so I can graft disease resistant varieties out west at my parent's house where I'm able to plant trees freely. & Unfortunately the NDM, CCream, & the Cac scions I was giving by another forum member never took as I improperly prepped the scions & did not graft using the proper Knife for grafting. Oh well, I'm sure he'll see this post & hopefully he'll take some scions as a Thank You & be willing to trade more scions...

Dom, Thanks for your help! I had rewrapped at the grafting point just as a precaution to keep water out for now. So this very nice older lady was kind enough to give me a branch from her massive Glenn tree she has that I seen driving in North Palm Beach. This one that took is on my Venus Tree. The scions I tried to veneer on to my Carrie didn't survive. (Should've cleft to top work over to a multi variety tree but that time will come!)

So it looks like my 1st successful graft!! ;D😁

Should I remove all the old parafilm & re-wrap where I grafted with more parafilm or is it unnecessary??
Thanks for your help!!!

Neighbor down the road has a very large mango tree planted almost 30yrs ago. The mangos are small, roundish, fibrous, ripens yellow with a strong peachy tang and resin flavor, mono seed. Went over and picked a bunch and gave rest to my neighbor. Since it's fibrous and not super fun to eat out of hand I cut the mangos halves off the seed and scooped out flesh with a spoon placed on wax paper on a cookiie sheet and froze. Think this will make for good smoothies down the road.

Yes they will! 👌🏽 Fibrous mangos also do well in the mango bread recipe posted on TT's YouTube.

Hey mango fanatic or whatever your name is. I stated a fact that if their green like that they usually suck. I really did not even pay attention as to who sold them that way and really do not care. What difference would that make ?  absolutely none!!!!, they still would not be representative of what they could have been. And the Zills are very nice people, I have met them, but that has no bearing on it either. So until you say something with substance that can discredit actual facts, close your pipe!

🤣 You obviously misread my post & what I said. & you may not care but that's your opinion.. which bears no weight or "substance" and that's a fact too  ;D Especially when you have no clue & totally missed what was said in the post all together.

I have known Chris for many years, as has otbers on this forum, and it is not unusual for them to sell mangoes ultra green and picked well before their time which only wri kle and rot.  Not bad mouthin9her, just stating a fact.
[/quote/]

I know Rob. In fact I  agree with what you said about flavors being off & mangos not being their full potential when picked even mature green. I too won't buy green mangos personally either but It just pissed me off when OTHERS wanted to bad mouth her for NO REASON whatsoever!!

Like Future said- "I will add it is easy for consumers to say what producers should do.  Takes almost zero time, expertise and effort.  As for doing it, well walk a mile in their shoes first..."

Yeah, I live an 1.5 hrs north so I'll take what I can get lol. Excited to try pineapppe pleasure finally even though it's been out for few years and probably "old hat" now.

-joep450

Glad you stayed positive even with green mangos! Tried Pineapple Pleasure for the first time myself recently & I hope u enjoy it as much as I did! 😁 May be "old" to some but now some green horns like us are starting to try them. Would be willing to help next time you can't make it when they open. You could've gone by Tropical Acres Farms, they have GREAT mangos too!

Their mangos aren't cheap.  Shame on them for selling such green ones, especially when the owner makes videos lecturing viewers on mango varieties and how to determine their ripeness.

 >:(Shame on the persons who do not know any better & want to blame other people for their problems!!  >:( you should plan accordingly before expecting anything with such high expectations!!! Seriously! How dare you!?!?! Ive know Chris personally for over a year now & just recently in the past few months the Zills, & never EVER has their been an issue with mangos! No one forces you to buy green ones! If thats all that's left because you can't make it during the madness when they open, how is it the owners fault?!? Instead of seeing & understanding that they are smart business owners for utilitizing even their green mangos, you try to take away what you can because you had a bad experience due to your own fault!!! Green mangos have a big consumer following at Truly Tropical (especially Asian market), so before you try to discredit or talk bad about these nice people in anyway (Zills & Chris), get your ass down to their places as soon as they open!!! As far listing varieties that are available, like Rob said you can call the Zills. For TT Chris lists the ones on her website & the ones she does list are the varieties in peak season with the most abundant harvest for that day. If you can't make it when they open & be lucky enough to grab some of the unlisted varieties then why would she list them? To get people's hopes up? & If she has only a few of that certain varieties!?? Come on!! Don't be an ASS!!!

I'm sure it's not the easiest Sugar Cane to peel. But, it's so beautiful that it's probably worth having, IMO; now I'm also looking for it.

Here's a rare one I'm looking for. It's a Hawaiian heirloom Hilo sugarcane

Anywhere I look, it's either out of stock or going for a lot on eBay.

I found a guy that has it in the Palmtalk forum, but he never responded back to my message :(

Tried reaching out for cuttings with no luck. Kens Nursery seems to be the only place to get them right now.

68
I wish I could have made it to one but I was out of town then.. :'( maybe a future talk

What is doing this to my Rosa Mango tree? & only Rosa's new leaves? Also how can I prevent & treat it?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango tree (possible Haden seedling?)
« on: June 26, 2017, 11:59:53 PM »
So I'm always on the lookout for Mango trees and sugarcane & I happened to find a mango tree on a vacant lot just North of Northlake blvd on A1A & Richard Ave. Found some drops that looked great. Very strong flavor & then sweetness & some fiber like a Haden. Brought the fruit to show Har & after talking for a bit, we came to the conclusion of a Haden Seedling being the most likely mango. Hoping to get a ripe one before it drops for a real flavor evaluation!!

You never know what you can find if you just look sometimes...  ::) :D

I was told ST Maui is just as fast as Valencia Pride, but it may be harder to find than VP.

I wanting to try growing a chewing variety of sugarcane but I cannot find a clear list of which varieties are best for each use.  Then I would like to purchase a good chewing variety because this thread is very interesting.

Don't think you'll find much of a list for each use.. As far as best, that is also subject to each persons point of view. I think the only ones not good as a chewing or juicing cane are the commercial varieties used for sugar production. Palmtreeluke's GreenPlanetFarms.com has some great chewing/juicing varieties!!

What an absolutely beautiful variety of sugarcane!!! Has anyone been able to find these cuttings? Also haven't seen a sugarcane post in the months I've been on here so I wanted to revive this post & see who grow sugarcane & what types! I've purchased Asian Black & a Florida Red(from palmtreeLuke). & found a different Florida red & point of java varieties which I'm currently growing.
