Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Queen Victoria Pineapple Plant
« on: January 15, 2018, 02:33:42 PM »
Mine is not very big so that might be why it's more sensitive. I just repotted it into a 1gal pot and noticed it sprouting side suckers. Maybe the cold stress is what caused it.

My Queen Vitoria pineapple plants grow suckers like weeds i took them off sometime ago and they have already grown back

That's great! My plant suffered a good bit of frost damage a few weeks ago. The core is still okay.

Yeah a few leaves on mine took some cold damage but not to bad to kill the plants
still have the rest of winter to see how things go Queen pineapple plants are suppose
to be more cold tolerant than other pineapple plants so i would think they will be fine
we shell see

One of my pineapples is showing first signs of flowering well inside the center.

I can't remember what pineapple type it is but I want to say Spanish Red.  The leaves have serrated/spiny edges all the way through.  I guess I'll have to wait to know for sure.
It's a pretty large plant in size but unfortunately no offshoots/suckers/pups of any kind yet.

Hey that's awesome that it has flowered keep us updated about how it turns out

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Jamaican Pineapple Fruit Called Ripley?
« on: December 25, 2017, 01:44:37 PM »
‘Ripley’ or ‘Ripley Queen’, ,grown in Queensland, is a dwarf, compact plant with crimson tinge on leaves; takes 22 weeks from flowering to fruit maturity; is an irregular bearer. The fruit weighs 1.36-2.7 kg; is pale-copper externally; flesh is pale-yellow, non-fibrous, very sweet and rich. InFlorida this cultivar tends to produce suckers without fruiting.

Well, if it's grown in FL, where we can find it to purchase? I would like to have this one in my collection.

I known that the Ripley pineapple was a part of the queen pineapple family i wonder if it could be the same as Queen Victoria pineapple
cause i already grow that and it has crimson tinge on the leaves and produces tons of suckers and I'm from Florida so maybe they could
be the same not really sure

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Kauai White Sugarloaf Pineapples
« on: December 17, 2017, 09:18:27 AM »
update again the kauai white sugarloaf if you plan to grow them they don't like the cold at all and get freeze burn easy last
week we had a few days here in florida that were pretty cold i went to look at them and most of the leaves were white...
so i went online to do a search on pineapple white leaves meant freeze burn from cold temps around 50 or lower....
i just hope it didn't hurt them to bad that they will pull through

its crazy cause none of my other pineapple plant varitys took any damage from the cold

so far i have learned Kauai white sugarloaf plants are  sensitive to sun they burn easy on really hot days and now cold sensitive
guess that's why they do so great in Hawaii.... jude has said before the plant and fruit sun burn easy

Funny but my Sugarloaf and White Jade have not shown stress unlike a couple of "twistees".  Temps have dropped in the greenhouse to 35F at least 3 times and some are getting very white.  I don't think pineapples in general like temps below 45F

hey mine look just like what you showed in your photo... the white color on the leaves is damage from getting to cold....
its weird cause only my white sugarloaf got damage and all my other pineapple plants did fine

When temperatures drop to freezing, the pineapple plant may be damaged. Red or white burn spots on the leaves and rotting fruit indicate that the plant was exposed to temperatures at or below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. While the pineapple can tolerate very brief periods of low or freezing temperatures, longer exposure may lead to the death of the plant.

Mine are almost full grown but like you said most pineapple plants don't handle cold weather very well I'm glad my queen and red Spanish are very cold tolerant and handle cold weather better

I sniffed my White Jade Pineapple( snapped off way too prematurely) today and it finally had a slight sweet Pineapple smell to it. The peduncle was completely dried out but the fruit still looked edible so I cut it open. It had a super soft core and the flesh had a great texture. Unfortunately, the Pineapple was not sweet at all, it had a Brix reading of 8%. It was able to develop a bit of flavor and the little bit of flavor I was able to detect tasted very similar to the White Sugarloaf.

I then ate a miracle fruit and then tried the pineapple again and it tasted fantastic and very sweet. I only ate a few pieces because I’m afraid of adverse reactions from eating an under ripe pineapple so I’ll eat the rest tomorrow if I don’t get an upset stomach tonight.

I’m glad I was able to salvage this fruit and at least I’ve learned my lesson to support the heavy Fruit before it snaps. I can only imagine how good it would have tasted if I were able to harvest this fruit fully ripe!

Simon

Thanks for letting us know how it turned out

How long do they take to bloom mine are huge but no pineapple, they are about 13-15 months, thanks

Hi if your pineapple plant hasn't flowered already and there as big as they are than you can always try to force them to flower
How to force to flower?

I use Calcium Carbide to force flower pineapple plants you just drop one into the center of the pineapple plant but make sure you water before adding one to the center of the pineapple plant.... you can order Calcium Carbide from amazon. once the little rock hits the water it will start to gas up and thats all you need to do. just don't breath the gas in and keep it away from fire very flammable

https://www.amazon.com/Calcium-Carbide-Lumps-50g-Bottle/dp/B00JWU3TA2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1511703768&sr=8-1&keywords=Calcium+Carbide

if it worked you should see a flower start in a few weeks after force flowering it
Thanks for the insight will try. a certain time it should like spring or summer?

I'm not sure it matters really but i always do it on a cool, cloudy day

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: White Jade Pineapple
« on: November 24, 2017, 08:42:41 AM »
Sad sad day today. I just got back from Thanksgiving dinner at the in laws house and found my White Jade pineapple fruit had snapped off at the stalk. We have had unusually warm weather, it was 91F, and it appearsappears that the warmth stimulated excessive growth of the many tops which caused the stalk to snap. This fruit still had about another month before it is supposed to be ripe according to the 6 month rule.

At least I got 6 large clones from the base of the fruit and another 9 smaller clones from the base of the crown. This fruit is still very green and has pointy eyes so I’m not expecting much in terms of sweetness and flavor from it. If it’s too sour, I’ll just take a miracle fruit before eating the fruit.

In hind site, I should have supported the Fruit when I saw it leaning over a bit. I’m hanging it upside down for one day before I cut it up because it still has a large piece of stalk attached to it which may still provide a bit of sugar.

Man that really sucks that it broke off....it should have been staked up to support it...hopefully next time will work out better
you have alot of offsets to grow now.

Eating unripe pineapple or drinking unripe pineapple juice is dangerous, reports the horticulture department at Purdue University. In this state, it is toxic to humans and can lead to severe diarrhea and vomiting

before i forget again Lol I wanted to let everyone know that the White Sugarloaf pineapple plant sunburns easy the leaves i'm talking about
i was thinking it was just mine but it seems they do the same thing in Hawaii to i watched one of Judes youtube videos again and hers does the same thing as mine.... so when time come's guess i will have to keep the pineapple covered up like they do with jude's pineapples i think they use a paper bag to cover them

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Pineapple slips, what to do?
« on: November 13, 2017, 08:09:35 PM »
just leave them on the plant till you pick the pineapple than you can remove them and replant them so they can root and grow into huge plant and later you will have more pineapples to eat... if you time it right you can have a full size plant and pineapple ready to eat it 1 year 6 months
