Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: is candongo the same as biriba?
« on: January 19, 2013, 02:31:02 PM »
well the tree is labeled as candongo  and its scientific name r.mucosa but i don't know because at the park they have made some mistakes i know of   ::)

i had read somewhere that the yellow one with larger spikes was more of a biriba...which is not what i had...who knows.

the tree looked in really bad shape maybe because of the dry season...can rollinia be grafted onto soursop or mamon?

i see some online sources that have rollinia mucosa as the same species as rollinia deliciosa?

just had a candongo this morning and i was shocked at how good it tastes...the fruit was smaller and had less sharp spikes/errm no spikes than the biriba pictures i have seen online. more brown instead of yellowish color.

it tasted something like mango and banana with the same texture of soursop...inside about 30 seeds but there was enough flesh so i don't complain.

maybe the tree is fertilized and in full sun?
you should probably propagate that tree for yourself because i have seen many custard apples trees around here and they have just a few to no fruit... i was at some land the other day that i may buy with my brother and the place is full of both soursop and custard apple trees...the soursop trees had fruit but don't remember a single mamon.

1rst:looks like a caimito or annona(soursop-rollinia) type.
2nd:looks a bit like cashews.

i have lots of seedlings over a year old if you want some of them.

159
in terms of production in a small container and any climate it seems the calamondin is the king. fruiting all year long for me in a 1 gallon bag  :o

dwarf ambarella does well in a 15 gallon...coffee in a 3 gallon bag fruiting.

these produced for me in a year or less.

well dioecious species can give you a male, female or hermaphrodite plant.

so for instance i keep 4 kei apples,4 ceylon and 2 i think are tropical apricot...then i have 5 pulasan, 5 mammea,4 quenepas,5 talisia and 5 asian persimmons.

when they fruit i will cut down excess males...the dovyalis can be kept small or in containers so not really a problem to keep 4.

not moneykeyfish but yeah dovyalis spp are dioecious=male or female flowers in separate plants.

i have hebecarpa, caffra and others sold as hebecarpa that i'm not really sure of until they fruit...i would keep like 4 until they fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Top 5 mangoes
« on: November 03, 2012, 02:55:51 PM »
yeah it happens that some fruit doesn't taste the same grown somewhere else but i'm confident as mangoes do very well here but besides that we have many microclimates at higher altitude.

well mangoes in my experience the polyembryonic mangoes can produce up to 5 seedlings from a single seed. i believe the sexual seedling will be more than likely be dead already...as i often have 3 or 4 sprouts and only 2 make it. but anyways as long as you keep 2 plants you will always have the variety and maybe a new one as well.

i will try to get a couple of the ataulfo mangoes as they are also polyembryonic.

from the few i have tasted:
madame francine,pascual and haden.

I do not have available all the other varieties mentioned, my trees are still small and do not produce fruit yet, ( LZ, CC, NDM, Lancetilla, Maha Chanok Alphonso)  out of the local varieties, the ones I have enjoyed the most was the Pascual, which is a bit acidic like an orange, which gives a nice twang to the mango flavor.  little fiber, and is huge.

I didn't see any Hadens or Kents this year at the Mango festival. seems they are disappearing as farmers switch to Keitts.   prefer a Kent over Keitt, but more profit for farmers in the later.

Next year I'm going to try and make a trip in the summer to Fla, so I can try out  some of the much talked about varieties here in the forum.  my NDM and Lancetilla,  should flower this year. as those plants are big enough.

this year i only tried 1 new variety "Osteen" and it was pretty darn good, even though it was just a sample "piece", I want to try a whole one.

most of my grafted plants(keitt, pascual, parvin, tommy and bizcochuelo) did produce flowers already except the bizcochuelo and don't remember if the parvin did...so i guess they can be grafted already, just let me know and the scions are yours.

what i like about the pascual is that it's quite big without any fiber, which is good when you want to eat it right away but i prefer madame francine as it's a bit less messy with better flavor. i don't know how vigorous pascual would be as i can't find that information online...my grafted one seems to be growing quite slowly, probably needs a larger pot.

did you ever try the ataulfo? it seems really good tasting...i wonder if this is the one i tried instead of alphonso.

too bad i never went to the mango festival  :P

it seems i'm the only person that actually likes noni and genip out of hand :P
i find it "cleansing"...

the pitanga i tried tasted really good so idk what everyone is saying.

barbados cherry is used to make juice and you are not supposed to eat it like that  :P

how can you not like loquat, pears or melons  ??? ?  dragon fruit?? i almost had an orgasm when i first tasted dragon fruit.

the fruit that didn't really impress me too much was abiu but i still eat it.

now the worst fruit ever is probably mocambo

guilty as charged  ;D

but hey at least this hobby is good for health and will put some food to the table.

nice looking plants.

Hi Felipe, i know you from another forum and facebook  ;D

It's hardy, native to florida and caribbean swamps. crocodiles eat them when there's nothing else.

Isn't feeding exotics to animals risky because it may escape cultivation?

I am growing these in pots with the worst wet clay soil i've seen and they still thrive.

As a reply for the first post,i understand S.Javanicum is used as reference for both S.Samarangense and S.Aqueum since such species are quite similar. All i know S.Samarangense is slightly larger with slighty larger fruit.

Malay apple(S.Malaccense) is different though...much wider and darker foliage. Larger fruit.

I have both wax apples and malay in 7 gallon containers but they haven't flowered yet. One of my seedlings which grew from a seed i found in a park looks different though, i wonder if it's something else.

Hello
My name is Maurice and i have been growing and learning about fruit trees(as a hobby) since about 2009, rarely participating in any internet forum but silently reading. The collection and knowledge increased drastically during this time but at first people bugged me for having too many plants, now my family has finally gotten used to it :P.

As a proud nerd i have many hobbies which include reading about different topics, sports and computer science/programming which is what i majored in.

See you around  :D
