Tropical Fruit Discussion / mamey
« on: June 29, 2017, 07:57:37 PM »
Just out of curiosity, does anybody know what the cold tolerance is on Mamey Sapote. I have a small seedling, and a grafted Key West Pantin. They have not overwintered here yet, and i know the typical growing region is south Florida, so i am curious if they can make it here

Tropical Fruit Discussion / lychee problems
« on: June 27, 2017, 11:49:42 PM »
I have a sweetheart lychee that i recently bought at a nursery in LA, and right after i bought it, a heatwave hit the area, and we have been experiencing temperatures in the high one hundred teens and 120's. Despite being shaded, the tree has been dropping leaves, and the leaves are all burned to a crisp. I have another lychee that is doing great, so i know they can take the heat. This one just wasnt ready for it. So, i was wondering if there was anybody out there that knows of a lychee recovering from this kind of heat stress, or is my little tree toast?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / heat woes
« on: June 20, 2017, 10:11:06 PM »
So, as everyone knows, California has been engulfed in a freak heatwave over the last few days. Today and tomorrow we are expecting temps in the 120's. I have Several new fruit trees that i have added this spring. Most of my trees are young, and relatively small, so they are confined under a patio, where there is shade provided and they have filtered light throught most of the day. I have a seedling longan, a couple of seedling jackfruit, a seedling mamey, a grafted mamey, a sugar apple, papaya, and atemoya among others. Temperatures have been over the 100 degree mark for a few weeks now, and none of the trees have really batted an eye; however, today i am noticing the first signs of heat stress on some of the trees. My grafted mamey had some of the new growth leaves scorched, but the seedling sitting right next to it received no damage. The seedling jackfruits took no damage, but a grafted jackfruit that is in the shade all day has sunburn on some of the leaves. The sugar apple is damage free, and the atemoya are all fine. My curiosity comes from why some trees of the same type have no damage while others struggle.....

Tropical Fruit Discussion / atemoya woes
« on: June 16, 2017, 12:00:48 AM »
So, i have this grafted Gefner Atemoya that i bought from a mail order nursery about a month ago. The plant is small, about 18 inches tall. When I first unpacked it from shipping it had lost all its leaves, presumably from stress. Since then, i have been caring for a living stick. Recently, the plant showed signs pf new growth, and it has been budding some new leaves. But today, i looked at some of the leaves. And they look like the leaves are drying out at the tips. The bases look ok, but the leaf edges are drying out, and the growth it has is so small as it is that the leaves havent even unfolded yet. I know there are documented cases of Atemoya growing in this area, so what could be wrong with my little tree? Any ideas? Also, unrelated issue, i have a seedling Longan, and it has a weird habit. The new growth leaves seem to wilt down, and shrivel in the mornings. When i come around in the evening, the new growth branch is proudly outstretched, is this normal?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / the oddest thing you have tried to grow
« on: June 10, 2017, 08:53:25 PM »
I just thought it would be interesting to see what different people have attempted to grow in your various areas, and was it a success or a failure? I probably have many plants that are considered oddities given that I live in a very desert climate. However, i think topping the list of true oddities for me is a Coconut Palm. I am really reaching for the stars on this one. While we do have an excessive # of Palm Trees in California, there is only one case of Coconut Palms growing in California, and it is an isolated grouping of trees on a sunny, warm hillside in a beach area. I have not seen them personally, but I have heard of their existence. The tree I have is a very young, immature seedling. It seems to be pretty content so far, but I know that Coconut Palms are cold sensitive to a high degree, and winter here will be a deciding factor for my little tree. I am prepared to protect the tree the best I can, and we will see what the future holds. Curious to see what other out of element oddities others have tried.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / just curious
« on: June 06, 2017, 02:40:40 PM »
I was wondering if anybody has ordered and successfully grown Paho from the seller on here known as fruittreenursery. I ordered a couple of seeds from him, and was pm'd by someone saying the seeds they ordered were all rotted, and they know of other members who also have had bad luck with this seller, so im just wondering if this individual has actually ducceded at sending seeds to anyone. Hoping for the best, prepared for the worst.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Pistachio trees
« on: June 03, 2017, 12:49:55 AM »
Anyone out there have any experience growing Pistachio's? I have a couple of trees, a male and female. Bought them at a nursery a few weeks back. I haven't changed anything yet, they are still in the nursery pots. The male has taken off, and produced many new shoots, and substantial growth in the few weeks I've had them. The female hasn't grown a lick. If I didn't know better, I would say the female tree is dormant. Is this common for the female to be veeeerrrryyyy slow at growing?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / sapote trees
« on: May 31, 2017, 06:12:15 PM »
Has anyone heard of a variety of White Sapote called Little Finger? I think that is what is called. I saw it on a rare tropical plant nursery website. I wanted to order one, but they were out of stock, and so I placed a wishlist item request, and then the most unbelievable thing happened, they removed the plant from their inventory. I contacted the nursery and they confirmed that some plants were removed from their online inventory because they had no current supply, and they did not know when or if their supplier would be coming trough again. They only gave a vague promise that if the plants became available again in the future that they would be reposted for sale. I have scowered the  internet and have not come up with any Sapote trees by this name and have come up empty. I came across a Suebelle at a nursery in Los Angeles, but was hesitant to pay their 75 dollar price tag. Especially when the same plant had a 32 dollar price tag on it. But they said that wasn't the price, and they wouldn't honor it. An obvious markup. The Little Finger sounded decent, now I am left to wonder if I will ever see it again.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / jujube
« on: May 29, 2017, 09:34:13 PM »
So, i have just started up this year with some jujube trees. I have a Li in a 7 gallon pot, amd a honey jar in a 15 gallon pot. Purchased the trees from a nursery in the area and they already had fruit on them. Was aytraxted to the idea of a fruiting tree that relished in hot summers. The trees have been doing well, but lately i have been noticing that the Li imparticular some of fruit has been softening, and it isnt ripe. It seems to harden back up again after the tree is watered. I know jujube's dont like wet feet, so I have been watering the trees every other day, but the temps have been over 100 degrees on the regs. I am wondering if they need to be watered more often. If anybody has any experience with this, please advise .
