Tropical Fruit Discussion / sapote trees
« on: May 31, 2017, 06:12:15 PM »
Has anyone heard of a variety of White Sapote called Little Finger? I think that is what is called. I saw it on a rare tropical plant nursery website. I wanted to order one, but they were out of stock, and so I placed a wishlist item request, and then the most unbelievable thing happened, they removed the plant from their inventory. I contacted the nursery and they confirmed that some plants were removed from their online inventory because they had no current supply, and they did not know when or if their supplier would be coming trough again. They only gave a vague promise that if the plants became available again in the future that they would be reposted for sale. I have scowered the  internet and have not come up with any Sapote trees by this name and have come up empty. I came across a Suebelle at a nursery in Los Angeles, but was hesitant to pay their 75 dollar price tag. Especially when the same plant had a 32 dollar price tag on it. But they said that wasn't the price, and they wouldn't honor it. An obvious markup. The Little Finger sounded decent, now I am left to wonder if I will ever see it again.

I gotta find this Greenmart place. I am isolated on the surface of the sun aka the Coachella Valley. It sucks because they never have anything even remotely interesting here at the local nurseries. I have committed much time, and gas to traveling all over southern California in search of what is classed as exotics here. I have accrued a nice collection this past year. Traveled around, and had some shipped in with painful shipping charges. I am classed here as a 9b, but it seems exceedingly rare for my area to drop below 30. That said I am out in no man's land with some of the trees I am trying to grow. nobody around me has any experience with these plants. Odd man out for sure.

I have a small Soursop tree in a gallon pot. It is quite happy right now, but it hasn't been through a winter here yet. We typically see winter temperatures down into the mid to low 30's. It is not grounded so I can move it into a more sheltered location. I also have some garden blankets, so we will see how it goes.

It looks like a sugar apple. It may also be an Atemoya, which is a Sugar Apple hybrid. I have both in my yard, but they are babies and are quite small in comparison to that specimen. I have heard much talk of Atemoya and Sugar Apples being difficult in low humidity areas, and I have also heard that they do not like dry winds, but so far I have seen that the trees prove resilient. My Sugar Apple is small, but very happy. I have actually had more issues with the Atemoya's. But I think that is just me because I am new to that type of tree. I am hoping mine will turn into fruiting specimens down the line somewhere.

I only water cuttings about once a week, and at anotherey dont swim. It is just a quick little water dip. They are watered very sparingly compared to my fruit trees, which are extremely demanding by comparison. I have not fertilized with anything. I have been spraying cuttings daily with Superthrive. I am some point will have to set up a shadecloth, but where the cuttings are they are spared the horror of afternoon full sun. I have another set of dragon fruit cuttings in another part of the yard, and they are catching afternoon sun, and they are getting some spots that seem to be sunburn, so i will likely have to move that batch. I have pulled up the cuttings that are not rooted, and have not found any signs of rotting. No sponginess.

So, i am feeling a little bit hopeless with these cuttings today. Out of seven original cuttings, i have one with definite growth, and one with possible rooting, and i have 5 cuttings that have nothing going on whatsoever. The part that bums me out is that like 4 out of the 5 cuttings i have are shriveled. They have no "meat" left on them. They are green still, but they dont have any reserves left, which leaves me wondering how long they can hold on.😫

I water till the pots drain usually. The tree looks happy otherwise. No drooping leaves or anything. I have stepped up to watering daily to see if that helps. The pots probably do get warm. The trees are in full sun, and we have been getting temps anywhere from the high nineties to like 112. I been hesistating on putting them in the ground because of the excessive heat. We are well past prime planting season for the kind of heat we get in this area. I do have some soil conditioner i can add as a mulch layer to the pots. For now anyway.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / jujube
« on: May 29, 2017, 09:34:13 PM »
So, i have just started up this year with some jujube trees. I have a Li in a 7 gallon pot, amd a honey jar in a 15 gallon pot. Purchased the trees from a nursery in the area and they already had fruit on them. Was aytraxted to the idea of a fruiting tree that relished in hot summers. The trees have been doing well, but lately i have been noticing that the Li imparticular some of fruit has been softening, and it isnt ripe. It seems to harden back up again after the tree is watered. I know jujube's dont like wet feet, so I have been watering the trees every other day, but the temps have been over 100 degrees on the regs. I am wondering if they need to be watered more often. If anybody has any experience with this, please advise .

The soil they are in is very light, and i mixed perlite in there also. I have a compost mix, but i have heard conflicting ideas on whether to add it in there at this point bcause they are not rooted. I have been spraying the cuttings with superthrive the last few days, so we will see if they like that. I was going to start composting the cuttings that show signs of new growth.

The white area isnt spongy. It doesnt really feel any different from the rest of the plant. The top half looks normal. I bought some soil conditioner today to use as a mulch for the plants. Also came up on some chicken manure compost. I have heard that is a good organic mix for dragon fruit. Any ideas if i should mix in the manure compost, or wait till the cuttings root?

I bought these cuttings on E bay. It came from an established, productive plant. The cuttings are getting morning only sun. However, i live in the desert, and the sun is unforgiving here. Although, i have not seen any similar discoloration on any of the other cuttings, and they are located in the same general area. I am just kinda watching the cuttings for now. Like i said before most of them are not rooted, including the one that has developed that odd discoloration.

I have not changed the pots yet since i bought them, so the soil looks like it is a well draining soil mix. I saw a similar plant at home depot yesterday. Same pot, same mix, and it looked normal. I am babying the plants for now hoping they recover

I can post a picture when i get home. I was trying to avoid putting the cuttings out in the full sun because it gets to be over 100 here, and the sun is brutal. I have read conflicting info that dragon fruit will burn if they are left in full sun when it is super intense. I have been spraying the cuttings with water the last few days. I do not mind waiting for new growth, i just want them to not die.

I have not seen that. Just watched it. I know that Dragon Fruit can be slow to root. I was just wondering if the discoloration is normal. I am careful not to overwater them. I know they are cacti, and I don't want to overwater, so I usually wait till the top inch or so of soil is dry before I water again, and at that I don't water a lot.

I too have a papaya problem. I bought a container of papaya from Home Depot a few weeks ago. They came 3 to a 2 gallon pot. The plants are small, about 12 inches tall. When I bought them they looked fairly normal. I took them home, and placed the container in a spot in the yard that received morning only sun. I watered them daily since it has been hot here. In the upper nineties or lower 100s. After a few weeks of the plant being there, I noticed that the leaves were looking a little on the yellow side, so I moved the plant to a different location that received more sun. The yellowing leaves did not seem to improve, and yesterday the temperature spiked to about 110, and the plant dried out, and one of the plants started to wilt. I watered it really good, and the tree has been slow to recover. I moved it back into a sheltered location. I am concerned because the leaves seem to be growing in off colored. All the leaves are like a yellow green, like a hybrid between a green apple and a golden delicious apple. I have not seen any bugs on or around the trees. I know that papaya trees grow well here, as I have seen multiple specimens in more  than one area in the area that I live. Trying to correct the issue with the plants. I really don't want to lose them.  :'(

Hi there all, I am looking for some assistance. I have a group of Dragon Fruit cuttings that I planted a few weeks back. Most of the cuttings have not exhibited any new growth since I planted them, but one cutting has developed a white area across the surface of the cutting. The white out area is about 1 inch around, and starts at the soil surface. The cutting is not rooted. I have the Dragon Fruit planted in a peat moss/perlite mix. I water them about every 3-4 days, and the cuttings only receive morning sun where they are located. Besides the discoloration, there are no obvious signs of distress or problems with the cutting. The other cuttings located in a similar area, but planted separately do not have any discoloration like that. I think I have eight cuttings total, only one has developed new growth. I live in an arid climate. We currently have daily temperatures above 100 degrees.

Hi there everybody, i live in Southern California. I am an avid plant grower. Have grown many different flowering and fruiting plants for years. Have recently taken on a whole group of new plants. I have everything in my yard from mangos,  and guavas to mamey, and almond. I love plants that are considered exotics in my neck of the woods, and i very much enjoy having the only jungle yard on the block. I am looking forward to conversing with like minded individuals out there who love their greenery
