Fresh direct has been selling cherimoyas for 3 to 4 dollars apiece.
That is cheaper than buying them from the local supermarket!  :o

Very few subtropicals are patented other than avocados and citrus. There are 5 patented mangos, 4 bananas, 4 Feijoas, 4 Opuntia, 1 papaya and 1 Tamarillo. There just isn't the same commercial selection of subtropicals as there is for temperate fruit.

Do you have a list of the subtropical fruits that are patented? Which variety of papaya is it?
The sole papaya patent (submission, don't think it was granted yet):
Taiwan Seed Station No. 7 aka TSS No. 7
USPP filing #10926668
Doubt you have it  ;)
All of the patented fruit are in the spreadsheet, if you view it in list view on the "AllPatented" sheet you can see the pick list under the "Type" column

Most of these I haven't tried fresh but have tried:
Cloudberries - Ikea sells cloudberry jam and its only 3 blocks away
Yumberry - Jamba Juice had it as a mix in for their smoothies a year ago, so I supposedly tasted it
Mangosteen - Have had several 'fresh', none of which were that yummy so they must need to be fresher
Durian - Plenty frozen at the local 99 Ranch
Jackfruit - Yummy, had plenty fresh

Haven't had Maha Chanok to the best of my knowledge, definitely haven't had Marang and so that was my choice.

I like the plant patent list. We should make one of those for all the mangos that have ever been patented. What other tropical/subtropical fruit has been patented often in the US?

Not so surely, as the list of possible candidates is in the thousands. But i gave murahilin something that i think will be a very good start.
Oscar
Yeah, I got started on my list then realized there are literally thousands or tens of thousands of edible fruiting species. Especially when you get into the fruit that is "good for jam" or survival food.

You are either more obsessive or have more time than me.  :o
Anyways I did a brief start to a similar list, and since I am fascinated by Taxonomy I have the family listed for each:

Also, since we are doing Google docs thought I'd point out my obsessively complete fruiting plant patent list I compiled last year to prove my fruit obsession  8)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Introducing WikiFruit.com!

Nice!
Over at Cloudforest we started a MediaWiki (http://www.cloudforest.com/wiki/Main_Page) but never really got much data into it. Turns out those pesky things called jobs got in the way. One plugin we are enforcing though is the Semantic and Semantic Forms plugins. That allows for easy data mining and easy form based data entry for inexperienced users.
One of my goals with the wiki (Axel the site owner did most of the work) was to be able to write some scripts to pull out plant info sheets which could be printed out. These could be used for things like informational pamphlets or, in our case quick bag stickers for our scion exchanges with blurbs for each variety.
We haven't really entered much data (newborn baby + job = no time) we got hungup on creating templates for different fruit, hopefully you surpass ours quickly.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Anyone growing Eugenia reinwardtiana??

I have a few I started from seed last year. They seemed to germinate easy and have a high germination rate. Very slow growth though

There are reportedly fruiting Mameys growing in Southern California around Long Beach which is 33 degrees north. Here at 37 degrees north there are some trying to grow mamey outdoors, who knows if any of us will succeed.

Done! Though I've apparently transitioned from zone 9b to 10a with the new USDA map I put both on :)

Hi! I'm Jason and I live in silicon valley of california, in east palo alto to be precise. Sunset zone 17, USDA 9B.
I'm active in CRFG (Santa Clara and Monterey Bay chapters) and on the Cloudforest forum which some of you are also members of.
I'm a young software engineer who loves gardening on our small 6000 sq ft. lot (only ~3000 sq. ft growing space). Luckily my wife loves gardening and let me rip out our lawns and all other landscaping to convert it all to orchards and high density veggie beds. We have a long way to go and I'm running out of room but I've got a serious thirst for more fruit.

I love rare and exotic fruit. I don't have time now to include a plant list but I've started many things that shouldn't grow here, had a few successes and a lot of failures. I want to grow everything. My trees are young so not a lot of fruit yet but as they grow my two young kids grow in appetite so they will always go to good use.
Some of my favorite fruits to eat are cherimoya, pluots, white sapote, passion fruit and babaco papayas.

I've never been to Florida or any other tropical place (other than southern California) but I'm finally taking my family next week to Florida for Disney World and rare fruit tasting and exploration. So I will hopefully be able to try lots of new fruit.
