Swimmiingfree,  Drilling holes into the sides of a regular container does not work.  When I first got interested in Air Root Pruning Containers I did drill a lot of holes in the side of a standard container.  The roots that did not hit EXACTLY a hole begin to circle around the inside of the container, and of course all the roots that actually hit the side of the container also begin to circle around and around inside the container.  A root grows like a bullet goes.  Meaning once a root starts growing in a direction, it will always continue in that direction until it finally hits an object that redirects it.  In side a container it never stops circling.    Air Root Containers have guides that direct all roots to an air root pruning opening.  Air Root Pruning containers are the best containers available.  I really like Root Maker. - Millet

Mike, we don't have to assume that the original species were citron, pummelo, and mandarin.  The genetic work has already been accomplished, and indeed the original citrus varieties were verified as being only the citron, pummelo, and mandarin.  As far as the pummelo and sweet orange being the parents of the grapefruit, I can't say for 101% sure that the genetic work has been done to verify that, but I believe it also has been.  Anyway, you will find that most all internet web sites state that pummelo and sweet orange are indeed the parents.  - Millet

Kona, your correct.  To obtain a mixed color fruit, due to the finger lime tree being cross pollinated, you would first need to extract the seed and plant it  Then you would have to wait until the new seedling tree grew up to maturity, and produced its fruit. However, many citrus varieties do not produce hybrid fruit from cross pollination due to nucellar embryos.  I don't know the extent of nucellar embryony in Finger Limes.  If the trees are nucellar than you would not obtain mixed colors, if not nucellar then you could get a hybrid mix colored fruit. . -  Millet

Mike T and Jcaldeira, I agree with you. I didn't mean to stop comments,. Some time back, I decided to try mulching a large Marisol Clementine trees.  After perhaps a month or so, I looked under the mulch to check on the soil. To my surprise, there was an uncountable number of pill bugs (rolly-pollys) living under the mulch.  Literally thousands of them.  I removed the mulch and that ended that.  - Millet

No, or almost no, commercial citrus grower, would consider mulching their citrus trees.  For the home owner with a few trees on their property, mulching is a person decision.  If you mulch be sure not to place the mulch against the tree' trunk. - Millet
