Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: White Sapote: USDA and SES 2
« on: March 23, 2018, 01:49:11 PM »
Here is an old thread about USDA:

http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=371.0

Supposedly it is also from F&S Park and the description from the old thread about USDA honestly sounds like the SES 2. Does F&S Park have 2 different White Sapote, or are these the same variety?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Home made compost for fruit trees
« on: March 22, 2018, 04:29:42 PM »
Depending upon your resources and climate it may be easier to just heavily mulch, though you may end up with various deficiencies depending upon what you mulch with, so you may need to supplement fertilizer. The other factor to consider is whether you can produce enough BALANCED compost to satisfy your needs in a cost/time efficient manner. Checking your average rainfall, you may encounter issues keeping your compost moist enough during the summer to have it break down effectively. Maybe start nitrogen fixing groundcover around the trees when the rainy season starts in September and mulch them under in April or May?

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Dekopon Seed Germination

I took them out of the seed coat and started each embryo on rockwool. I have 2 one year old dekopon seedlings from 20+lbs of fruit last year. This year I've found 1 mature seed in 15lbs (so far).

You're missing the perfect opportunity to name it "PPAP" (Google for the meme).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Golden or Yellow Dragon Fruit?
« on: January 15, 2018, 10:38:19 PM »
I just picked up an identical specimen from "La Salsa" market in Jacksonville FL, having heard good things about yellows. I have to say I'm somewhat disappointed, as it just tasted like a sweeter dragon fruit, which I'd summarize as a grass flavored melon with chia seeds.

Did I get a bad one, or is this all I can expect from even the best dragon fruits?

Here is a video about them... apparently they taste better when they're dried out?

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Re: Dekopon seeds

I purchased about 30 lbs of "Sumo" oranges over last winter and found maybe 3 seeds, so not sure how much luck you'll have. I managed to grow one of them, and since they're polyembryonic I ended up with 5 seedlings, 2 of which thrived/survived and were hopefully clones. They're about a foot tall now, and have been grown indoors for their entire life, as I was afraid of greening (I'm in FL).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Lychee Onion Taste?
« on: June 12, 2017, 06:27:26 PM »
@Doc, It does indeed have chickenhearted seeds; I got it either from Bender or Excalibur last year.

I noticed under closer inspection that there appears to be some a small infestation of scale, perhaps green scale, in between some of the clusters. Not sure if this is affecting healthy fruit... Is there any way to safely clean scale off almost ripe lychees?

It is highly likely a family member overfertilized the tree or gave it some random "organic fertilizer" while I was out of town. Due to the taste and the scale, I'm almost certainly going to prune it all when I return home Friday.

I have had success germinating fresh seeds on rockwool in a covered container at about 80*. It took between 2-3 weeks, from what I remember. I have some seeds I dried about 6 months ago, I'll start them this weekend, in the same manner, and follow up...

They weren't tart or fermented, and they were sweet. It probably was as SoCal2warm said, the soil is highly organic and it has been raining heavily here recently, and it is in a pot base. I may just prune the rest of them off, as I tried fruits from other branches and they all tasted the same.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee Onion Taste?
« on: June 11, 2017, 12:58:55 PM »
I've got a Sweetheart Lychee producing for the first time in a 5 Gallon clay pot, and the fruit I've harvested so far have an "oniony" taste. They're bright red without blemishes/spots and the flesh is firm and juicy...  with a hint of chives... without the characteristic floral scent of a lychee. Any idea what could have caused this? Can it be fixed?
