Does anyone have any blackberries growing in south Florida? Do they need an acid bed like blueberries?
Thanks,
Mike

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: what is the Pickering of bananas?
« on: April 11, 2012, 08:58:22 PM »
The Pickering of bananas is the Pisang Klotek.   It was imported from Sri Lanka in 2005 and has since been distributed by members of bananas.org, myself included.  The fruit has a very intense tropical flavor with apple and pineapple overtones.  As they become more ripe they are sweeter and less acidic.  The consensus to date is it is the best tasting banana in the world.

It is a medium tall plant, not a dwarf, with beautiful burgandy colored midribs on large deep green leaves.  Survival zone -- Z10.  Fruiting zone -- Z9b -- my area.  Fairly cold tolerant but, like all bananas, short duration low 30's will cause leaf burn leaving the pseudo stems intact.  Genetics -- group AAB.

I have several pups potted if anyone is interested.

I would be interested in a pup if you have any left.
Thanks,
Mike

I thought that you were going to try that this year on a nam doc mai.  If it works on your tree then I'll try it next year one of mine.

I have had a winter crop the past four years from my tree.  I take the summer fruit off the tree once they set. That way it will grow leaves leaves over the summer and flower and fruit later in the year.  I usually pick my first choc anon in November and the last hang on until  Jan.  It might not compare with my my favorite summer fruit but, in the winter harvesting your own tree ripened fruit will always beat a supermarket mango.

I know of a mamey that is in Merritt Island FL that is around ten years old.  I'm going to put one in tomorrow in Melbourne Beach.  Does anyone know how well they do with salt spray?

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Citrus Greening

My Uncle works with some large groves in the Sebring area.  He has told me that when a tree gets greening it can be kept productive and healthy by foliar feedings.  The greening infection keeps the plant from getting nutrition from its roots and the plants slowly die, if they are foliar feed they will keep growing and producing.  They have been doing this for several years at there location and although the trees are infected they are still growing. and producing normal fruit.
