Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee advice needed
« on: January 22, 2015, 07:13:18 PM »
Hello,

My sweetheart lychee is flowering very well for the first time, it's fruited before but not a lot of fruit set.  It's been in the ground for six years and is about 13 ft height and spread.  I gave it 0-0-50 in early December and it's received only rainfall for irrigation since October.  I was wondering when to start irrigating it again and if another round of 0-0-50 would be benefical.  I have searched online and have found too much water encourages vegetative growth at the expense of fruiting and too little the fruit set is poor as the flowers dry out.  What is the right amount?  When is the right time to start?  Is there a spray that is needed? My mango trees produce loads of fruit and I spray nothing, are lychees more prone to anthracnose or powdery mildew than mango?

Thanks
Mike

Clay if you are trying to attach plastic sheeting to PVC put something like a golfball in the plastic then tie a clove hitch around it from the other side.  You can then tie the plastic to the PVC.  I usually did one golfball on each side of the PVC support tied together every 18"-24".  It's time consuming but once you do it you can keep it like that and take it down and put it up like a tent.  Also if you string an emergency space blanket over the tree  you can reflect the heat from the ground and the lights back into the tree.  Good luck hope it helps.

I'm probably 350 ft to the high tide mark.  My atemoya and sugar apples don't get leaf burn from the salt spray.  There are some good sized seagrape and sapodilla wind breaks so they're not getting the full spray.  My rollinia is in a better protected spot and when it gets above the gable on the roof it gets burned pretty bad.

How did the Hardy Fairchild taste?  I have a seedling but haven't seen anything about the fruit until that picture.  Any other info about it would also be appreciated.

Jeff,

If you graft any more trees of your chintalala let me know I want one!

Have you tasted the nishikawa avocado?  It's supposed to have a very creamy fruit.

Congrats on the job Ed.  Everything is looking great!  Your hard work in winter protecting everything is paying off.

Wrote Truly Tropical but meant Fruitscapes. The Rambutan's orgin weren't listed. I did try one when I got home and it was excellent. I also tried one of the Orange Sherbert tonight and it did have a distinctive orange faste. Perhaps not conclusive since I haven't had one before but now wish I had purchased more than 2 of them.

I'm a bit intrigued as to how someone on the West coast is selling Orange Sherbet fruit.

Top Tropicals was selling "orange sherbet" mango trees.  While it seems clear that they aren't the acutal OS mango, someone could have bought one of those mislabeled trees and now be selling the mislabeled fruit from it.

Carlos,
What do you use to combat laurel wilt?  Is it a preventative measure or a cure?
Thanks

Does anyone know why so many young rollinia fruit turn black and fall off.  My tree set 60-70ish fruit that got to marble size and turned black from the stem down and fell off.  Is it a disease? Nurtient deficiency? Do I just have a dud seedling tree?
Thanks

My Pickering has a mild coconut flavor, but it's nothing like my coconut cream.  The coconut cream is much better.  I'm not sure if it's the right time to get budwood, my trees are holding fruit right now.  If that dosent matter you are welcome to some budwood from my Pickering, but I'm about 2.5-3 hours north of Miami so I would imagine you could find it closer.
