Citrus General Discussion / Clementino Rubino

My little seedling Clementino Rubino is showing some new growth. I think she likes her new home :)
I can see some new shots on the sides and makes me wonder if this variety is rather a bush form then a tree? Some of the leaves at the top were lost right after arriving and I think it might have been because of the heat while in transport. They also hat black tips. Everything new look nice :)

I'm in Michigan and not be able to plant in the ground. But the tree is now about six years old and the stem and twigs strong enough to carry some fruits. Will see. Probably never enough that I have to store them for five month ;)

That is awesome. Does this mean the sugar content gets hight if the Moro goes in the fridge?
I have a Moro and the tree is finally big enough to have fruits next year.

I hope you are right. Remember the times when citrus farmers were assured DDT is safe? How many years did it take till they discovered it was not and for how many the devastating news came too late? And the effect is still there, ever wondered why the breast cancer in women in the middle age group is so high?
With medicine the same, Pharmacy tells you it is safe until the first lawsuits need to get recalled.
Systemic anything is not happening on my trees and if I can avoid it, will not buy anything that is treated that way. I just don't trust Monsanto and consortius.

Systemic means there is residue in the fruits too. Do not want to eat that.

Very interesting

In my younger years I did not understand the fuss about restriction of some goods. Today I do. I wish there would be more public awareness about the danger of importing plants and wildlife.

wouldn't you see the damage from the leave miner? I had them four years ago and their trail trough the leaf layer was clearly visible.

112
that sounds a little bit hopeful I guess

leaf curl can be a water problem. Don'tknow your location but here, if it is very hot in afternoon, leaves can be curled. Too dry, and leaves can be culrled same if constantly too wet.

This really is very sad. I just hope that they can find a cure before many varieties are lost.
Maybe they should move to norther states to protect the collection. Need only one of the little bug to create damage.

Thank you for looking that up Raggashack. That confirms a bit what I was thinking. I hope that if there are fruits on my tree that still need to get ripe, that it will be enough to bring them in the house with extra light and warmth.

The characteristic for citrus greening is that the leave discoloration is asymmetrical and not what I see in your pictutre.  I think your leave looks more like a nutritional deficiency. Manganese, zinc?
What kind of fertilizer do you use?

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Meiwa blooms for 2017

That is great. As my citrus collection seems to grow, might need to think if I could overwinter some of them outside. I have a Meiwa ans owari satsuma. Young trees and for this year maybe not brave enough to bring them out. But maybe in the future a possibility :)

Is the reason for lesser fruit quality (from second bloom) because lack of sunshine and warmth? or other reason?

very interesting. Will there be fruits ripening with this method?

As a cacti lover you must have lots of practice ;)
I just revived one of mine after it was sitting iddle and dry for almost a year. ( citrus would not survive I'm sure)
Totally shriveled and now big and plump :) I had a big collection when I was younger but really got tiered of the injuries from them.

Sometimes I tend to love my trees to death ;(

Citrus General Discussion / Re: new greenhouse planning
« on: July 23, 2017, 05:12:02 PM »
Oh my goodness. Brian that looks just impressive and awesome. We (husband and I ) are thinking about putting up a greenhouse in three to four years too. Needs to be sturdy as we can have really heavy storms. No clue where to start but following you will be fantastic. Congratulation to your new baby. :)

You need a different fertilizer, much more nitrogen as citrus is a heavy feeder.  It is normal that leaves fall off from time to time. Your tree is stressed from digging around too. Just give it a rest, fertilize, water like your cacti ( maybe a tad more ;). ) And enjoy.

124
Interesting. Kinda like espalier? Wondering if that would work for container citrus too but then might get difficult to move around

I am trying to keep it as much as I can outside. In the winter it is close to the door of my garage and unheated frame backing the South side of the house. It is mounted on the small cart and I am moving it inside only when night temperatures descend to -4C. Inside the garage in the dark it can be kept for around two weeks at temperatures around 8C.Ilya it sounds like your temps are not getting as low as here in MI or in Canada. Here is can get to -20C and with arctic wind chills even lower. I assume the tree does not has any fruits when you keep it in the cold dark? Or do they go in resting mode and ripen as soon as it gets warmer at your place?
