Can someone recommend which soil sample test should be good enough for Mango Trees for homeowners?

From Texas A&M AGRILIFE

1. Routine Analysis (R) $12 per sample
(pH, NO3-N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, S and Conductivity)
(This test is a base test for basic fertilizer recommendations.)

2. R + Micronutrients (Micro) $19 per sample
(Adds Zn, Fe, Cu, and Mn to test 1.)

3. R + Micro + Boron (B) $26 per sample
( Includes Test 2 plus boron)
(Recommended for individuals applying compost and manures.)

4. R + Detailed Salinity $34 per sample
(Includes Test 1 plus detailed salinity analysis)
(Recommended for individuals using lower quality irrigation water.)

5. R + Micro + Detailed Salinity $41 per sample
(Includes Test 2 plus detailed salinity analysis)

6. Routine Analysis + Organic Matter $32 per sample
(Includes Test 1 plus organic matter analysis)

7. R + Micro + Organic Matter $39 per sample
(Includes Test 2 plus organic matter analysis)

8. R + Micro + B + Organic Matter $46 per sample
(Includes Test 3 plus organic matter analysis)

9. R + Texture (determines % sand, silt, and clay) $32 per sample
(Includes Test 1 plus textural analysis)

10. R + Micro + Texture $39 per sample
(Includes Test 2 plus textural analysis)

11. R + Micro + B + Organic Matter + Detailed Salinity $68 per sample
(Includes Test 8 plus detailed salinity)

12. R + Micro + B + Org. Matter + Detailed Sal. + Texture $88 per sample
(Includes Test 8 plus textural analysis and detailed salinity and provides the most comprehensive
data needed for troubleshooting most plant/soil growing issues {does not address pathogen, pesticide or
hydrocarbon issues}).

Sorry about the losses.  I would not totally opt out of growing mango trees be patient; I lost only the smallest of frail trees purchased online (never again). All my other trees are alive and well although with plenty of leaf burn of course: Coconut Cream, Valencia Pride (handled the cold the best), Orange Essence, Excalibur, St. Maui (looks the worse), Pina Colada, Lemon Zest, Maha Chanok, Nam Doc Mai was in a container and placed in garage during freeze, Angie was potted and left out side and exposed to the freeze (looks pretty bad as well) and a few more unknown mango trees. The Angie looks pretty bad but I left it outside in the freeze (2 days 32 and 2 days of 27) and its still alive. That Angie BTW only has one flush on it from pugging it last summer I got it from the Mango Fest at Fairchild. I however began to diversify my yard to include a tropic snow peach and currently in search of a Lula avocado and some other trees better suited for Zone 9B. I have seen that around Zone 9B, most mango trees that were pruned to shape  with a large rounded canopy received less damage. This may be because the trees older established system and dense foliage protects the inner portions of the tree. I'm I wrong?

Any updates to any of these trees after the freeze?

Can any Simmonds backyard growers enlighten me on the pros and cons of ownership of a Simmonds. I will be looking to plant it or grow it in container. Zone 9B. Central Florida. Thanks a million!

A low of 28 ZONE 9b. East Orlando. I believe most of my trees will be OK still just plenty of foliar damage. May be a few dead branches probably. It will not until Monday or Tuesday until we see the full extent of damage to mango trees. Those well established older trees should be ok. I noticed most of them had zero damage from last freeze a few weeks ago around my area. At least they are replacable and gives us an opportunity to hit the reset button on our yards.

I have been searching the web for tropical fruit tree magazine subscriptions and I can’t seem to find any. Most are seeds and gardening plants like flowering bushes. Is there any really good magazines oout there for fruit trees or catalogs that can be delivered to ones home? I would like to drink a cup of coffee by my mango trees while reading these catalogs. Thanks!

Thank you for that input. Hopefully 2018 will get me a bit more details on it.

Just a waiting game from here on out. Time to prepare a few of my younger trees. Or may be not, I will evaluate the way the trees handle this cold snap.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Possible Snow in Central Florida?
« on: December 30, 2017, 05:11:31 PM »
Snow near Central Florida to start the new year? There’s a chance it could happen this coming week — but the conditions would have to be just right.

While much of the nation is already in a deep freeze, a mass of cold air is expected to work its way into our area by Thursday — leading to the chance of snow between Orlando and Tampa.

“Some of the coldest air in years will be invading the continental United States next week,” meteorologist Paul Dellegatto from Tampa TV station WTVT explained in a Facebook post. “Eventually, some of that cold air will be spilling south into Florida.”

He referenced a European forecast model that is predicting snow on Thursday in parts of Pasco and Pinellas counties in west Central Florida near Tampa.

“When it comes to snow in Florida, it always hinges on having enough moisture around WHILE it is cold enough to snow. The vast majority of our sub-freezing nights occur under clear skies and radiational cooling, so snow is rarely mentioned. In this case, there is a small chance,” Dellegato explained.

“And I mean like tiny, that there may be enough moisture coming in off the Gulf to produce a wet snow flake or two next Thursday. I am just throwing this out there,” he explained, then cautioned, “Don't plan on making your ☃️ just yet!”

Yes it is. Orange Essence was actually released for sale and I do not think Orange Sherbet was. You can do a forum search for this and there is some information on it but its mostly all outdated and nothing really new.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Orange Essence Mango AKA 40-33
« on: December 30, 2017, 01:06:41 PM »
Hello mango growers. Just trying to get a few more details on the Orange Essence I just grabbed from Excalibur. I did a forum search so I apologize for a repost but I can never get enough conversation going on unique mangos. The search yielded some results in info such as a Gary-Kent cross and the taste of it. How about early reports of productivity since some of the first postings of this fruit 4-5 years later.

I also got some results on the fruit size but not much on the tree itself. I was just wondering if any members here can report on any common fruit or tree diseases. Some one I know stated that the tree has good bacterial black spot resistance. Also that it was a vigorous grower. Some online nurseries stated the tree as being a slow easy grower. I appreciate any Orange Essence Tree information nearing 2018. Thank you in advance!

I pugged my PC around a month ago. It was growing vigorously prior to that. After the Pugging it has not pushed out any branches. Not sure if it's dead. Do you think pugging can kill a mango tree or is it dormant waiting for spring?

All these cado trees got me wondering why in the world I can't seem to get one to take off. They all end up drying out after a while and eventually I pull them due to lack of growth. May be I need to quit because I have spent 100's of dollars trying. Zone 9B. Orlando. I have done all I could even mound planting and babying them. SMH.

WOW! Rob those are some large banana. Do you mind sharing a picture of the tallest plant you have. I am curious to see if it is prettier than the blue java because I really like how the blue javas look when they are large I just don't like how long it takes to fruit. I hear the sweethearts don't take as long to blooming also are quicker to ripen from the counter but stay green on tree allowing to preserve the fruit much longer. Seems like a true champ. Can you tell me more about it please? Did I get a true sweetheart judging from the photo I posted?

Where did you get your trees?

Yes, I just don't know about that Kathy. I have heard bad reviews on  it lately and mine is slow growing. May be one flush all summer.

close enough to wedge field more like Avalon Park. I get my trees from all over Florida. From Central Florida to Miami.

Half rack of blue javas on plant, Dwarf Cavendish pushing out bananas, and a newly planted sweetheart for next year.
