Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Juciy Peach and Peach Cobbler Mango
« on: August 09, 2017, 02:04:38 PM »
I just plated my Peach Cobbler (not like I needed anymore mango trees) and justified pulling out a Hamlin Orange tree due to the citrus psyllid insect problem in Florida. Can anyone post a photo of the fruit when ripe? Can anyone describe the growth profile of this tree? Thanks in advance...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Grafting
« on: August 08, 2017, 03:12:06 PM »
Greetings,

I'm interested to know from any members if anyone is grafting any new mango varieties and the type of rootstock your using. I would like to know your thoughts on using a Valencia Pride as rootstock. I am also thinking of cutting back a 3 year old Haden and grafting a Pina Colada scion and Coconut Crème scion to it.

53
So does anyone know if I should relocate the Haden and them top work and then graft? Will the grafts take place while the tree is getting used to it's new home?

54
Thanks everyone.. sounds like a great idea. I will definitely look in to it. I don't graft but this could be my first ride. I like the idea...is it a good time to graft? If so, when is not a good time to graft...

55
Pick one, leave one. Just incase....

56
Use it as rootstock or zion?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Haden Mango Tree. To Keep or Pull out.
« on: July 28, 2017, 12:36:31 PM »
Well, I finally ran out of space in my yard for any more trees. I want to space out two trees but in order to do so I must remove one tree. I am torn because I have a Haden and I like the fruit and it was my first fruiting mango tree. However, I have better varieties but, I am going to ask for you opinions. So, for the Haden, should I keep it or pull it. Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / All About the Zill Mangos!
« on: July 14, 2017, 02:22:57 PM »
So as I look around the forum there are tons of posts scattered through out with information pertaining to the Zill mangos. I thought it would be a good idea if we have one post that we can all refer to in the future for past, present and future Zill mango releases.

I currently have a few of them growing. Some have bloomed but have not fruited yet. Anyone else here currently growing them with successful harvests and photos of the fruits?

Thank you @pineislander for your desrcription. I figured it would be very fibrous. Not a quality I look for.

Nice to know. I had my doubts but it seems more and more likely that zone 9b is pretty darn good for mango trees. Must be the central florida humidity that makes them bounce back from freezes. At least that is my theory.

61
Were they ground planted?

62
I know a few who are container growing lots of tropical fruit here. Im curious to see within the group who has mango trees ground planted that surived freezing temps below 30 if any.

63
Hello, I am new to this group, but not new to growing mangos. However I am fairly new to growing mangos in Central Florida (Orlando Area Zone 9B). Are their any members with great success stories in mango tree growing in Zone 9B?

If so please let me know how long have you had your tree and what variety it is.

Also please let me know any failure stories if you have any. Thank You for your responses.

Good purchase. Anything different is a great addition. I saw those as well. I di not know that the trees were different in prices when I saw them. I got the Angie for $35. Have you planted it yet?

65
I will say it is a very nice looking mango. Hope the sweetness level varies and may be sweeter next year.

66
Either way I will be happy. The LZ is still a highly rated mango according to most even a top 3. I have a wide palate from a regular old fashioned Valencia Pride to the Pina Colada, Maha Chanok etc.. What about the Kathy? I have not seen or tasted that fruit yet.

I will have to check my photos to see if it was displayed at the Fairchild Mango Fest this past weekend. I took plenty of photos covering almost all the displayed varieties.

I'm now thinking Angie might not be as good as what I had in mind.

67
So I read that Angie was an early season type. When did you pick the fruit?

-My OS was a gift from someone who got it from TT. I planted it recently and it will not fruit until 2-3 years from now, yes I have read all the threads on TT and OS and LZ.

I got a Kathy. Not sure if it's a REAL Kathy. I will have to wait and see. If it is not oh well, one more spot for me to plant another variety since I ran out of real estate.   :(

I was at Fairchild's and the were selling the wild blue mango tree. Not sure if I should of gabbed one.

Also if you have Facebook look up the group Mango Tree Growers Of America. Lots of backyard growers with photos, etc.

'Kastooree': The blue mango

Anyone tasted this blue mango before?

69
Hmmm. Never even realized that. Good to know. Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Introduce Yourself
« on: July 05, 2017, 08:33:53 PM »
Hello all, I am a mango tree grower and fruit lover. I love the mango fruit so much I even created a Facebook Page called Mango Tree Growers Of America with lots of information about mango tree growing and the members are very active posting photos and information. It was originally called Florida Mango Tree Growers Club, but do to popular demand the members expanded from Florida to USA statewide and now I am receiving messages that it should be renamed Mango Tree Growers of the World  ;D. I don't plan to expand it that much because mango trees were originally imported from other countries, so we are currently trying to help each other grow the perfect mango tree and fruit in all kinds of zones from Florida to California to Alaska :) . So that is a little bit about me and my goals are to expose all information regarding backyard mango trees and propigation, grafting, container growing, and fruit tasting.

My current list of trees are

1. Haden
2. Valencia Pride
3. Kathy (k-3)
4. Maha Chinuk (Maha Chanok)
5. Nam Doc Mai
6. Coconut Cream (Coconut Cream)
7 Piña Colada
8. Orange Sherbet
9. Angie

Thank you all!

I just brought back an Angie from this years Fairchild Festival. It was $35 tax included. I am debating wether to plant it on ground or grow it in a container. It is described as semi-dwarf, early season, which is why I got it, to extend my mango fruit season.
