Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cold blasts in Asia
« on: December 04, 2013, 03:14:44 AM »
Winter has finally arrived, the security-guards wear socks  :o and jackets at night, the dogs wear vests against the cold and mosquito's went on holiday!

We don't even need airconditioning and it is possible to wear a polo-shirt without sweating at noon! The car-tyres have to be pumped, and people regret their cars don't have any heating at all  :-[

Now the mango's can start to bloom totally and the swimminpools can be closed for a while (as long as the ice don't break them).

The men even don't need ice-cubes in their beer and the women see a good opportunity to wear the latest fashion from Korea with long sleeves, they even don't wear short skirts these days  :(

Life in the tropics can be soo hard.  ;)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / gardenlights and fruit-tree's
« on: December 03, 2013, 08:28:15 PM »
I have small tree ( looks like a red flame-tree but it's not) growing under a gardenlight in a big pot. That tree can aim it's leaves to the sun and i see the leaves follow the sun all day.

Now i changed the gardenlight above that tree for a stronger one (17Watt savinglight) and at nite i see the leaves aiming at the lightbulb.

That tree has not flowered since i bought it (8 months ago) and i wonder if it ever will because if the light at nite. Actually i want to replace the tree by a fruit-tree but maybe it will never fruit because of the light?

Did anybody encounter problems like this with fruit-tree's and gardenlights? My lights burn all night for safety.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Papaya Holland
« on: November 22, 2013, 08:50:18 AM »
I didn't eat papaya for many years because of the bland flavour of them. Today my wife brought a really nice one named Papaya Holland so now i want to grow a papaya-tree again.

Did any of the Thailand-travellers eat this papaya in Thailand? I would like to know if there are better ones then this Holland variety. Better means sweeter and more tastefull to me.

Papaya Holland is being sold all over Thailand since some years. They all love it and now i understand why.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / induce flowering on pomelo tree's
« on: October 31, 2013, 07:24:02 AM »
I want to know how the Thai can have pomelo=tree's from only 1-2 feet (30-60) that are flowering and fruiting big pomelo's.

I found this article   http://kasetsartjournal.ku.ac.th/kuj_files/2011/A1106211048375905.pdf

It seems that the Thai have a special trick to make them fruit when small.

I have a pomelotree (grafted) in a big container in full sun and i want to induce flowering. Does anybody have advice on that? It is hard to find good info about Pomelo's while they are a great fruit.

The leaves were not dark green last month but i sprayed with zinc and boron and put spagnum moss and pine bark in the soil. I also gave it ironchelate and now it looks pretty good again.

I have the ruby red pomelo which is very hard to grow is what i heard so i have to do my best.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / West Indian ultra tropical avocado's
« on: October 29, 2013, 06:58:39 AM »
I bought some (booth#7 i guess) big round avocado's grown in Thailand and they taste pretty good. I expected it to taste more watery but it was almost as good as a hass from Australia. They are much cheaper then hass though and much bigger.

What is the best WI avocado that might grow in Bangkok? I need some more tree's now  ;D  and allready cut down some palmtree's to make space.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Durian smell
« on: October 16, 2013, 07:03:53 PM »
I saw many mongthong durians for sale this week (also in supermarket) but they don't smell anymore. I thought they were kan yao because of their small size but now they sell small mongthongs (offseason).

Which durian variety smells the most, even when hanging on the tree?

I don't want my garden to smell like rotten onions so i better plan which variety's i will graft onto the main tree.

My avocadotree had been overgrown by another tree so it was in shade for some months. Also it was laying on the ground. ( I was in Europe).

I pruned the other tree so now it gets full sunshine again but some leaves are getting brown now which worry's me.

Is this sunburn or maybe some other problem?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / putosan

http://www.pohonbuahnursery.com/2013/02/putosan.html

I was checking this website and found many fruits i have never heard of. Why Thailand does not have a website like this?

The putosan looks like a pulasan but is it the real pulasan?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dwarf durian tree
« on: September 28, 2013, 07:15:33 AM »
http://rfcarchives.org.au/Next/Fruits/Durian/DurianOtherSide3-92.htm

My wife wants to have a durian tree and if i can grow a small tree that would suit the garden.

I read there are dwarfs that can be like 3 metre or 10 feet tall and bear extra big fruits!

Has anybody ever tried them?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocado tree type unknown
« on: March 07, 2013, 11:34:16 PM »

After a very long search i finally found a grafted avocado tree. The seller thought there was only 1 type of avocado so that is what i bought.

Can anyone identify the variaty?

I want to plant it in the raised bed on the last pic, i thought of making a high mound of black soil and put it in the middle. The bed has holes all around but i doubt if the drainage is good enough during the rainy season. Do you think the roots will rot? Some variaty's have a rotting-free rootstock but i have no idea what i bought. I want the tree to be around 10-15 feet high max and multigraft it next year if i can find scions. Should i cut the tip off allready to train the tree to stay small and wide?

I read that i have to cover it from full sun, summer is coming soon here and will be very hot. Should i paint the trunk, make a shade-net or maze around it? I will be abroad during that time so i want to prepare all now.

The soil under the bed is heavy clay.

I can also put the tree in a big pot but then i have the same problems and the raised bed is much bigger then any pot. In the bed are also passionfruits, heliconia's and the soursop which is growing there right now will move to a big pot.

The place has full sun all day.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Boron and Ant-repellant
« on: February 26, 2013, 02:42:46 AM »
I want to add Boron to my soil and am looking for Borax.

Then i found home-made recipe's to make ant-repellant. You mix 5 parts Borax with 1 part sugar and that will do the job.

If i spread this around my mango-tree's then i kill the ants and also add boron to my soil was my thought.

Did anybody here try this allready?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Wood vinegar and dolomite
« on: February 20, 2013, 03:26:56 AM »
Today i bought dolomite which contains 20% of MgO

On wikipedia i read that MgO solubs not good in water, it needs an acid to solube.

Then in a plantshop i saw wood vinegar for sale. This is a new product it seems.

 http://c.ymcdn.com/sites/www.echocommunity.org/resource/collection/F6FFA3BF-02EF-4FE3-B180-F391C063E31A/Wood_Vinegar.pdf

Wood vinegar is an acid and also good for soil and plants.

Can i use dolomite (i have the finest powder availlable) together with wood vinegar to improve my clay soil? Or is it better to only use the dolomite with water?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango-grafts aftercare
« on: February 17, 2013, 09:34:44 AM »
I did many grafts on my mangotree's who grow well. Now the tree's start to flush under the grafts so much that i don't want to take them of anymore.

What will happen if i don't take the new sprouts of? Will they grow faster then my scion or just the same speed? Do i have to take them of now or is it better to do it later when those sprouts a grown so the scion will get all the energy that is going to those new branches?

First my plan was to take all new sprouts of all the time but now on some branches there are 5-7 sprouts coming and i guess my tree wants to make itself like a round ball full of buds (and mango's) in the future. I can also graft new species on those new branches so is it wise to let them sprouts grow or not? What do you guys do with the cocktail-tree's?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / container temperatures
« on: January 18, 2013, 08:54:22 AM »
Today i felt the soil of some plants that i put in the full sun in a black plastic pot. The soil was very warm, so warm that i wonder what the max. soil temperature can be.

Can all tropical tree's stand  very warm roots or is it better to use a stone pot or another color as black?

Here it is winter now and i want to put some pots in the full sun permantly. I will use big clay pots then but in summer the sun here is much stronger and it is much warmer then now. Is it better to cover the pot against the sun or is it no problem if the soiltemp gets pretty high?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / dwarf pine-apple
« on: January 10, 2013, 09:38:22 AM »
Here in a fruitshop they sell very nice small pine-apples which i want to grow.

Can i just grow them as the big ones, cut the head off and put it in a bowl of water to root and then plant it out in the sun?

The small ones are less sweet but very crispy and a very nice flavour.

How many fruits will those small ones give on a plant? I saw pictures of 3 on a plant but i dont know the species. How far do i need to plant them away from eachother?  I think i will grow a few of them for fun and to eat of course.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / making underground wateringsystem
« on: January 09, 2013, 09:09:09 PM »
I have the plan to make an underground wateringsystem myself.

I still have a lot of the 20mm (3/4 inch) black flexible sprinklerhose and want to dig it in the soil. With a hot needle or drill i will make small holes in the hose and lay it underground so the hose is 20cm (18 inch) away from the next hose and covers all the soil.

Does this work well or is it better to buy the sweating hose that we can buy in the store which is for underground watering?

The underground sweating hose from the store drips very slowly so the wateringtime has to be very long to soak the soil. I want a faster system because my sprinklersystem sprays about 10 minutes a day now and that is long enough for me. It also sprays the orchids above the pond so i would like to connect it to this spraycomputer.

For the tree's in big containers i also would like to use the homemade hose with holes in it, just dig it in the pot and i hope it will work for many years.

Did anybody make an underground system allready and has some advices/experience?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / improving soil (heavy clay)
« on: January 07, 2013, 10:31:16 AM »
I want to grow my annonae muricata in the garden in the full soil which is heavy clay.

I allready put agriculture gypsym and lavameal on the soil but that is not working well.

How can i improve the soil to make it a nice place for my guanabana?

I am prepared to dig a big hole in the clay and add anything that this tree needs like big or fine sand, compost, organic fertilisers, more gypsum or whatever is availlable. I just want all the best availlable.

What is the best way of growing this tree in my clay?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / young just bought tree's
« on: January 07, 2013, 12:59:48 AM »
Tree's that are bought here mostly have been in the shade all day in the shops.

Should i let them get used to the sun by keeping them in the half shade for a while or just plant them in full sun next day after purchase?

I get different advises here so i don't know what to do.
