Tropical Fruit Discussion / achacha (garcinia humilis) seeds
« on: March 16, 2014, 11:58:02 AM »
I have been growing 20 achacha seeds for 2 months now. I have 1 sprouted seedling and it has 3 stems with leaves. I carefully checked some seeds and they still look green behind the peel and saw a small root on 1 seed. Some are not so green anymore so i hope they are not rotting.

I read they sprout very slow but how long did it take you to get them sprouted?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / jaboticaba seedlings die and come back
« on: March 15, 2014, 08:23:33 AM »
I have 5 jaboticaba seedlings that sprouted. 2 grow well but the others come up and then die from the top down. Then 1 or more weeks later they come up again and die again. Now they came up again. Are they missing something or is it normal?

They are behind a shadenet so they don't get to much sun. The one in full sun (with shadenet) all day grows the best.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / avocado flowers to cut or not?
« on: March 12, 2014, 10:21:33 AM »
I was lucky again and found  another small grafted avocadotree from 40 cm (1.5 feet) tall that is flowering. The graftunion became thick, just saw that when i took the tape off, i guess that's why it is flowering?

The tree will break if it holds fruit and i want to use it for grafting, can i cut the flowers of and graft on it immediatly or should i wait?

Can i graft onto this tree or is it not the right time to approach graft on it?

I have 2 of those small ones now with flowers, it must be less then a year ago before it was grafted i guess. One is a booth7 and the other is a small avocado but unknown, looks like a hass on the picture. I also bought a small grafted Peterson, is that a nice one?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / new banana disease
« on: February 19, 2014, 09:25:08 AM »
Some weeks ago i read in the Dutch newspaper that banana's will get very expensive soon. There is some new disease going on that is killing all bananaplants. For sure the plant-technologists will start working on new variety's who are resistant but i wonder if you guys also read that?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 50% shade
« on: February 17, 2014, 11:35:13 PM »
I have many seedlings that require 50% shade. What would be the best way to raise them?

1= covered in a 50% shade net put in full sun.

2= uncovered in a place that receives full sun for about 5-6 hours a day.

3= uncovered in a place that (almost) never receives full sun but will be a light spot caused by reflection from the surrounding walls.

My parents are going to Fort Pierce in Florida and i asked them to buy some of the best dragonfruit cuttings availlable there.

Is there a nursery that sells cuttings in that area? Or a nursery that can send them to Fort pierce?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / dwarfing effect by grafting
« on: February 10, 2014, 03:44:19 PM »
If i graft a jackfruit/avocado seedling onto another seedling will that tree become a dwarf?

Or a marang seedling onto a breadfruit seedling, will it become a dwarf?

If it doesn't become a dwarf then will an interstock (which is mature) help for the dwarfing effect?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Achachairu or pulasan?
« on: January 23, 2014, 10:35:28 PM »
I have pulasan but unknown variety and i have achacha-seeds. I have one great big spot in full sun and one smaller spot in 5 hours sun a day.

And does any of these have destructive roots?

I still don't know what is the best variety of jackfruit but i wonder if it can be better then thongprasert jackfruit.

Today i saw grafted tree's for sale of a taiwanese variety but i forgot the name. I will grow some in big containers.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / irradiated fruitseeds
« on: December 16, 2013, 09:02:39 AM »
Is it possible to grow achachairu-seeds who are exported from Australia (to Holland) or will the plants have/get problems from radiation or other treatments they got before they were exported?

I have the plan to grow them (They are sold in Holland) but i have no idea if those achacha-seeds will be viable or healthy or maybe i should not even try it at all?
