Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rosa Mango
« on: July 13, 2014, 08:30:28 PM »
after tasting a bunch of mangoes this weekend...there was one that stood out from the crowd...being a large, colorful fruit, with a very nice sweet/tart flavor.

the fruit was labeled as Rosa, but after reading about this Brazilian cultivar in 'Brazilian fruits' book, i find that the picture and description don't match.

Wondering if anyone has experience with this mango?

Looks like we have a name change!

here is the quote from the discussion in the thread about the Grimal Jaboticaba

Ok...here is the update...

after corresponding via email with Marco Lacerda (from www.e-jardim.com, and one of the authors of "Brazilan Fruits"), and comparing pictures, and descriptions of a few varieties, we came to the same conclusion:

The variety called "Grimal" in the USA, is most likely a variety called "Peluda-de-alagoas"...and if not this variety, then some other similar variety from the North East of Brazil...that doesn't have a botanical name.

so the botanical name of the Grimal is back to Myrciaria sp. (for now)....and it's certain that M. spirito-santensis is an entirely different species.

[note: Grimal has also been called, Fuzzy Jabo, Cambuca do Norte, and Large Leaf jaboticaba.....so there have been many names for this one variety....and the proper name is most likely Peluda-de-alagoas]

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Beware of Scammers!
« on: July 08, 2014, 06:36:51 PM »
beware of scammers on the Forum!

about 95% (or more) of the sellers here are great people...but there is a small percentage of peckers out there.

these demons usually have the following characteristics...so are easy to spot....

1) new member

2) who has not participated in the discussion

3) who offers something for sale or trade on their first post.

4) offers something that sounds too good to be true....(like free stuff)

I think overall, the forum is a very strong community...with plenty of eyes and ears....and the tropical fruit world is a very small world!!  So together we can be aware, and learn to spot these rats!

my advice is to keep an eye out!  but be respectful and don't jump to conclusions!  and make sure to do a little research about a member before sending a payment!

scroll down this webpage, and you'll see an section with Noris Ledesma in Japan visiting an operation that grows mangoes in large greenhouses...it's truly amazing.

sorry if this has already been posted on the forum before...I've never seen this.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Plinia hybrids, variations and mutations
« on: June 10, 2014, 09:34:32 PM »
this subject is exciting to me!

apparently Plinias are easily hybridized...and crosses occur casually with some frequency in Brazil....I never realized how easy it was!

after planting thousands of seeds over the course of the last 5 yrs or so, I've selected some interesting new plants....based upon growth habit, foliage, and other physical features (like pubescence).

all of the plants I've selected appear to have a common thread, with the Red jaboticaba being the parent.  Some appear to be mutations or variations of the Red jaboticaba (which is a hybrid), and some appear to be authentic hybrids (like M. trunciflora x M. caulifora hybrid [red jabo])

as the trees grow larger this year, I will update the thread with some pictures of the foliage and growth habits of these seedlings!

I'm hoping they are precocious....like the Red jaboticaba....so I don't have to wait over 7yrs to see some fruits!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Passiflora macrophylla...huge leaves!
« on: June 04, 2014, 06:02:54 PM »
saw this passiflora sp. at my friends house today...I was sure it was an annona (maybe illama?)...but after taking a closer look (and being corrected by my friend)...I realized I had been tricked!

the only way I could tell it apart from an Illama was the fact that the veins on the top side of the leaf are very prominent....and there did appear to by tiny glands forming at the base of the leaves...

I don't think the fruit is that great....but this tree is worth growing for the foliage!  the leaves get huge!!

here is a link with a full sized leaf

and some pics of the small specimen that tricked me!

lately I have been adding plenty of Garden Lime, to the soil of my containerized annonas....(figs as well)

I'm getting bolder and bolder, adding more and more....(my logic is, if they can handle the fruit and spice park, they can handle a lot of lime)...the soil mix I've been using has a good deal of peat and pine bark, so its on the acid side if anything.

so far so good...I've been doing it mainly to sugar apples, atemoyas, custard apples, and illama...I have not really put it on Rollinia....(but I'm thinking it could help...the ones at the spice park look great...but I've always thought they like neutral / acid pH?  I guess they can handle a wide range.

I will be sure to let the group know how the trees respond to the applications of lime.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona fruit set 2014
« on: May 28, 2014, 11:45:23 PM »
this year I'm serious about getting a decent crop of annonas...last year I neglected my trees, and had a poor crop.

I've been hand pollinating frequently...and fortunately there are beetles present to help as well!

here are some pics and descriptions (keep in mind all trees are in pots!):

Mr. Minh's...setting fruit nicely...seems very vigorous compared to other atemoyas...very easy to grow so far.  Hoping the fruit is nice when grown in FL.

Dream atemoya, doing very well...setting lots of fruits...super excited about tasting some from my own tree...last year only got runt fruits that didn't fully ripen

Yucatan finally set a fruit!!!  this variety is strange...the leaves are quite large, slightly fuzzy...the flowers are elongated....and they rarely ever set fruit, even with hand pollination...and after the fruit sets, they seem to retain the petals for a long time.

Big Red, really proving to be a winner....totally out performs Kampong Mauve...setting much more fruit. My small 7 gal tree looks like it might produce a nice crop this year...might even have to thin some fruits

A seedling Biriba that has really surprised me...setting lots of fruits, and at a young age and small size...I'm planning on propagating this one, mainly because it sets lots of fruits, and seems precocious. (Jabotica got a grafted tree from me at the manatee plant sale!)  I really have been impressed by this one so far, because I have much larger and older trees, that have flowered much more than this tree, but seem like less than 1% of flowers set fruit....as opposed to my special seedling that seems have about 10% of flowers set fruits....I guess some rollinias are just set more fruits than others...must have to do with self compatibility of pollen?

and lastly, here is another rollinia (sylvatica)...have two trees flowering side by side, same size, same conditions...both healthy...one sets bunches of fruits..the other sets none!  Really hoping that this is a decent fruit....the pictures I've seen of this fruit don't look half bad...they get decent sized...about the size of a sugar apple.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / growing Mr. Minh's atemoya in FL
« on: May 19, 2014, 11:54:15 PM »
I don't know if we already have a thread dedicated to this new atemoya cultivar....but I'd like to start one.

not sure how the story goes, but I remember hearing that Mr. Minh is a CA grower who spent many years trying to develop a nice hybrid annona...the result was a prolific producer of delicious large fruits.

anyone have more info about the origins (parentage) of this hybrid?

I'm also curious to hear of other growers experiences in FL with this variety.  I'm hoping it's not like African Pride...where it performs poorly in our humid FL weather....I know some Atemoya varieties are best suited for the CA climate.

so far in my experience, it looks like the Mr. Minh's atemoya is extremely vigorous, and easy to grow....the tree flowered profusely shortly after being grafted, but did not set any fruits the first year....now on the second growing season since grafting, the tree really seems to be setting some fruits....(i've been hand pollinating as well).

I am excited to see how this variety performs in my state..I'm hoping it does half as good as the pics i've seen of the plants in CA!

160
not sure if it's just misspelled...and possibly another cuitivar...but I saw a tree in my friends collection labeled as Medora...it seemed to be a dwarf tree that had decent sized fruits..

hoping someone has heard of this?

thanks

161
today I got a few scions from a tree that's a supposed chance hybrid seedling of Julie x Palmer

whatever this seedling is, I hope it stays dwarf...the mother tree certainly looked to be dwarf so far.

I hear the fruit is good, and basically looks and tastes like a cross between the two varieties.

If I can find out more info I will keep the forum posted.

162
it has been brought to my attention that the proper botanical name for one of my favorite species, has been changed to Eugenia selloi, from E. neonitida!

It will take me a while to get used to the name change, but I'm glad their flavor will remain the same!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / "sweeping" sugar apple
« on: April 24, 2014, 09:49:57 PM »
anyone heard of this variety??

supposedly a very old one...just wondering if anyone has tasted, or can tell me something about this annona squamosa cultivar.

the name is peculiar.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / your favorite soil mix
« on: April 17, 2014, 09:30:31 PM »
Just as of recently, for rare seeds that like an acid pH, I've been using a mixutre of Pro-mix BX http://www.hydroponics.net/i/137312

and Fafard (organic soil conditioner) which is aged pine bark http://adamaskwhy.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/20130201-163718.jpg

this is my favorite potting mix so far...but is a bit expensive...the cheapest place to find Pro Mix BX is at a wholesale place near me  called BWI (Bunch Wholesale Incorporated)...it's $24 for 3.8 cubic feet.

I usually use about 2-3 parts pro mix, with about 1 part of Fafard soil conditioner.  It's lightweight, holds moisture well, and has a good acid pH, below 6.5 I'm guessing.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Juicing Jaboticaba
« on: April 15, 2014, 11:25:58 PM »
this season I'm seriously considering juicing some jaboticabas. (mainly because the trees make so much fruit, it's almost impossible to eat it all.)

I just haven't figured out the best way...I think I'm going to hand press them through a metal colander...while trying not to agitate the skins or crush the seeds, hopefully reducing the amount of tannins in the final product.

anyone ever juiced jabos before?

I suppose I could freeze the juice after is bottled, so I don't have to pasteurize it?

any info on this subject is appreciated!

167
I've heard that attempts to fruit durio in a controlled climate green house, were met with failure...everytime the trees would get to size, closer to being large enough to flower, they would succumb to a deadly fungal attack....

maybe the person who ends up fruiting a durian in FL, will have to devise a method for purifying the air, to be spore free??

168
Great video about an endangered sapotaceous fruit tree of Brazil...one of the authors from "Brazilian Fruits and Cultivated Exotics", Marco Lacerda, has a part in this.

I hope you enjoy this!

youtube has an option for closed caption, and you can translate the captions.

noticed my friend is growing this beautiful tree...is it worth eating?

the plants are in 2-3 gal pots..and they were a bit stunted at first...requiring some chelated Fe...and getting green scale.

But now they're starting to flower...hopefully I have more females than males!

looks like these two are males though...they have flowers in clusters.  Females have solitary flowers.

male flowers

for those who've thought about fruiting canistel in a pot...from seed...here is my experience.

I got a Bruce fruit from Robert is here...planted the seed about 7yrs ago...is been in this 25 gal pot for about 2-3yrs now...and I think it will stay in this pot one more year.

I'm excited to see how the fruit tastes...hopefully they're decent.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Licania michauxii (Gopher Apple)
« on: March 16, 2014, 04:01:16 PM »
I bought a pair of these today...at the leu gardens plant sale...from the native plant society.

I've heard some taste very decent....and this one is related to coco plum

I plan on growing them in pots...but the lady who sold me the plant was not so keen on that idea.  I suppose because the plant has an extensive root system...and spreads like a ground cover.....but I'm still very interested to see how they grow in a pot....they seem to be very happy in the one gal pots they came in.

anyone ever taste a good gopher apple??  or try fruiting them in pots?

I have a friend who has a plant that looks exactly like a tibouchina....he claims it to be an edible, tropical fruit....are there any species or relatives of tibouchina that make an edible fruit??

I was thinking this might be an ID mix up?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Campomanesia xanthocarpa
« on: March 08, 2014, 06:22:53 PM »
One of my C. xanthocarpa seedlings has started to flower after about 2 yrs...its really rootbound in a 3 gal pot.  It's a tough tree...nothing seems to bother it so far....except maybe the city water (not horribly though)

I think it helps to let the trees get a bit rootbound....if you want them to fruit early.
