Tropical Fruit Discussion / Miami Red Guava
« on: July 22, 2012, 12:47:20 PM »
anyone have any additional details on this cultivar?  supposedly a very nice fruit...just never heard of it before.

all im familiar with is the ones form lorenzi's book brazilian fruits, and the common ones in FL like ruby supereme and barbie pink...and the white ones, which Im not a fan of (yet).

I love the red/orange/yellow fleshed and very aromatic guavas.

I posted a pic of the tree (rutledge) in an earlier post...when I saw the tree I was captivated, and luckily given a tip by a knowledgeable mango eater/grower, that this was a premier mango...and I must admit, the flavor is mild and sweet, and reminiscent of the fragrance of a honeysuckle (or some sweet flower)...it has no fiber and a great deal of delicious flesh to eat.

I highly recommend this extremely delicious mango!

I wish I had more to eat now.  :(   :)

Has anyone had a taste of this cultivar?

the fruits are purple, elongated, and look like a zeppelin

they look like they could tip the scales and beat the largest keitt or lancetilla mango out there.

Any feed back??? Brasilieros calling all Brasilieros!.

wondering from the group,

why you dislike or like annona fruits?

any annona fruits are acceptable to comment on, but I know we don't like pond apples and such...so let me know more about ones that are commonly enjoyed by others, or even commonly disliked by many, but still available in markets readily, whether domestic or foreign markets.

thanks in advance for your input!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / who's ground layered a mango?
« on: July 18, 2012, 01:06:07 AM »
wondering who's employed this as a method of propagation for mangifera indica...aka mango.

I've seen mangoes naturally do this, but never seen anyone do this on purpose to a mango tree.

mango.

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / topsy turvey mango!
« on: July 18, 2012, 01:04:08 AM »
anyone ever thought of trying to grow a mango tree airlayer (preferably a condo mango) in a homemade topsy turvey type hanging pot?

I'd also like to see a dwarf mango growing in a big hanging pot!

I heard someone bragging that they got one to fruit in 5yrs from seed...I'd like to hear of one that fruited earlier!!

I can't imagine any sooner than 3 yrs and some change

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Your favorite local seedling Avocado?
« on: July 14, 2012, 11:17:29 AM »
Wondering who has found a seedling avocado tree near them locally, that stands out amongst the others as being your favorite?

After searching through many fruiting seedling trees near me, I've found one seedling tree with large, light green, smooth skinned,  pear shaped fruits, with a firm, buttery, egg yolk flavor pulp.

It my favorite...so I've grafted it before it succumbs to Laurel Wilt.

Anyone else have a description of their favorite seedling avocado tree?

Here in central FL we are in danger of losing some amazing seedling trees, so I'm on a mission to preserve some of the finest.

I will post pics of tree and fruits asap!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona scleroderma (cawesh, posh-te)
« on: July 13, 2012, 11:57:47 AM »
I've been growing a plant my friend gave me.

the tree is more fickle than I thought!

judging by the leaves (sometimes stupid idea) I gave it the same treatment as my guanabana, but scleroderma seemed to dislike full sun (at 3 ft tall, I thought would be ready)...I had to move to the shade to keep from looking like it was gonna die.

also noticed it doesn't like high ph...I think high ph with too much sun was my prob...but maybe just high ph?

any whips from the tizards?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / White Jade Pineapple
« on: July 12, 2012, 05:55:10 PM »
Who's growing "white jade" pineapple? or has tasted?  Or has any info?

I hear Frankie sells this type exclusively...and it was selected by Dr. Zee of Hilo, HI.

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / hand me down Garcinia hombroniana
« on: July 11, 2012, 12:43:01 PM »
got some hand me down seashore mangosteen fruits from a friend who attended the tri-club meeting, with Chris Rollins as speaker...I'm assuming he brought some from fruitsy spicey park.

the fruits had an appealing tart, apple banana garcinia flavor...seedy yes, but well worth eating.

I hear this is a superior rootstock for magosteen, I wonder how it would work when paired with G. prainiana?

anyone else have any experience in growing this one?  there is an unprotected tree near me, and it's done very well so far, through some wicked freezes....and the tree is very attractive.

thanks!  :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / The most wasted fruit in your garden?
« on: July 06, 2012, 11:19:03 PM »
What's the fruit you are growing, or see being grown that is wasted the most?

citrus gets wasted quite a bit...loquats, mango, figs, passion fruits, and jaboticaba.

and of course carambola.

I'm thinking of ways to use the fruit...and how to use each fruit for the best application...like for instance, I hear green carambola is an excellent brass polish...if you have lots of green fruits that fall all time...and lots of dull brass...then you can make use of the wasted fruits!

any ideas??
