Here are some pics of my stubborn E. candolleana seedling...I had to drench this baby for a few months before she perked up, but I'm happy to say, its almost back to healthy...its about 90% recovered.

I used Turfpro Fe, one of the only organic Chelated Fe drenches on the market...I'm sure you can achieve the same results with any brand of chelated iron, (ironite liquid, etc...)

they green up from the bottom to the top! and some leaves will remain yellow, even thought the new growth is a healthy red color...Red growth on jabots and eugenias (sometimes pink or purple), is a sign of a happy plant!

Here is are some photos,

Before drenching regularly, only had been drenched minimally

After about 4 drenches, and 2 months...almost completely recovered and ready to bloom sooner!

Fe drench can make all of the difference!  especially when growing acid loving plants with city water (high ph) or in south FL lime rock soil!!!

Happy drenching!

I have a rollinia deliciosa / mucosa seedling (one of about 5), but the shortest of the bunch, is about 3 ft tall, and threw out a flower!!

I think they are only 3yrs old, and they are in 15gal pots...

It will be nice if i get a fruit off this little tree..I was surprised because most rollinia I've seen flower from seed had to reach over 6 ft tall.

anyone else have some lil flowers makers?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Question for Fruitlovers!
« on: June 25, 2012, 02:24:17 PM »
hey Oscar

was thinking about shipping small seeds that have sprouted and are fragile..like inga...and wondering if you couldn't suspend them in that gelatin looking stuff that I see plants growing in (as a medium).

I'd think you could put them in a small plastic case (not too dissimilar from what you'd get out of those machines when u put a quarter in, and get a stupid toy).

Maybe put the seed in the tiny plastic case, with it half full of gelatin/soil mix, then fill other half...cap off and send?

Just an idea...I'm always wanting to increase the chances of a rare new fruit arriving to my town!

So far I must admit, you don't seem to need such an invention...all my seeds from u have done quite well when partially germinated...but I have heard inga has limited distribution due to the fragile seeds, and quick germination of the seed while still in the pod.

Thanks in advance for feedback!

BTW...looking for Inga sessilis !

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango inverted "T" Bud Graft attempt
« on: June 23, 2012, 05:45:22 PM »
Didn't take pictures, but I've recently attempted to graft a pickering mango via inverted T bud method...all I had to use was one small bud of growth, and I slipped it up into the inverted T cut (with some difficulty, when trying not to tear cambium of rootstock).

The scion was about the size of 3 grains of rice.

Has anyone else attempted this?  or successfully done this graft on this species??

I will try again and post my step by step photos like I did with Green sapote, inverted root graft.

Why do all of these grafts have to be inverted anyway??? ;D

makes them sound harder!

Thanks for feedback in advance

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Girdling trees...has it worked for you?
« on: June 21, 2012, 11:44:39 AM »
I've seen this attempted many times with no success...but one time I saw a seedling sugar apple tree get girdled by the green tape that held it upright to a bamboo pole...the next year, the tree was only 3 yrs old, and completely covered in fruits and flowers...at about only 4 ft tall.

It may not have been the girdling..but I have sugar apples same age that didn't fruit near as much.

Wondering anyone who swears by girdling?? or swears it doesn't work?

Thanks!

Need to gather a list of plants that are good to tissue culture, and ones that are next to impossible...

also would be good to see reasons why, and anyone's experience with tissue culturing.

I have some unique passion fruits, papayas, figs, and....a bunch of others that I'd like to pick from to tissue culture later this year.

What should I give the green light? what should I avoid?

Anyone ever tissue culture Garcinia or annona????

THANKS!

I'm curious to see who guesses this one.   ;)

around 2010 I got some nice trees from the broward county tropical fruit club.

it looks like the Nuathong is pet patchong (or however u spell)

also looks like Eugenia klotzschiana is Eugenia myrcianthes.  I have some true klotzschiana seeds that germinated this year, and the leaves are noticeably dfferent...also, my tree is way too big to be Pera do campo...it's 8 ft tall and growing...I bought it at around 7ft...pera do campo maxes out at about 6 ft I think.

just wondered if anyone else noticed their tree wasn't what it should be?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Solanum robustum
« on: June 10, 2012, 01:57:24 PM »
Tasted a fruit that was supposed to be a solanum robustum... and it was quite delicious, like tomatillo passion fruit...but now I'm reading it's an exotic invasive in HI, and fruits are poisonous.

I'm wondering if that's just inexperienced people writing descriptions of the plant...or maybe playing it safe because it's a nightshade.

I've got about 5 seeds that have sprouted, and are close to flowering soon.

Funny because this plant peaked Oscar's interest in HI, and it's an invasive there!

Maybe we can start a real good debate here? or just have a dud topic!

had an idea to wrap some figs that split before ripening, with buddy tape...it worked very well, allowing the fruits to properly ripen without pathogens and bugs invading the flesh.

I'd imagine this wonderful tape could be applied to other fruits that split, like annona fruits, guavas, and others....I'm wondering if it is also effective to wrap young fruits with buddy tape, to stymie the carribbean fruit fly's oviposition process.

I may have grafted some surinam cherry scions on, upside down...they don't seem to care...

anyone else don't this by accident or on purpose?

I guess its commonly used to dwarf trees? or no?
thanks waft grizzards

Tropical Fruit Discussion / double wedge graft, anyone attempted?
« on: May 21, 2012, 06:42:38 PM »
Soon I will attempt the following, but wondering if anyone has attempted or heard of this method.

Take two scions prepared for a cleft graft, and line them up side by side, and insert them into the same root stock.

Would they heal together (the two scions)in the middle cut, and also heal to either side thats touching cambium of rootstock?

like a sandwich cleft graft.

Sounds tricky but plausible in theory.

anyone growing?

Just got a pair from a friend, I hear they taste good, they are large, and endangered...

I doubt anyone's growing, but doesn't hurt to ask

I'm giving 3 seeds away to the first request,
and 2 seeds to the second request.

Shipping must be paid by u, either paypal or send check.

This Rollinia deliciosa fruit is the first believed to be harvested in the Orlando/Winter Park area.

SO for now (being that these seeds had no pollinator present) we are assuming the seeds will come true.

The fruit was delicious, and the tree is cold hearty to about 32 F, and it will still hold fruits and flowers if protected from wind!

So the name of this particular tree is "winter park", and I think it befits the tree, being it came from winter park, and its a cold area for this tree, so this one fruit was a long shot!

Good luck growing this one!  it fruits  in a pot at around 4 to 5yrs...and it has flowered non stop for around 2.5 yrs!!! believe it or not!

So who wants some special annoa seeds?  here is pics of the fruit eaten today on mother's day!
