Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Red atemoya?

I think the majority of those interested in collecting 47-18 for breeding efforts, are casual growers, and see it as a crap shoot, but a fun project with a rare fruit tree...it's a gamble, but worth it to tinker with seeds and amateur hybridization attempts, if enough people try, someone is bound to find a new variety...it just takes a chance, and the more people there are taking a chance, the more likely we will be to stumble upon a variety worth keeping.

I was thinking it was desirable because it's got genetics from 3 species all in one plant, and of course the red skin.

But the flavor to me was not sweet enough, and the texture was just barely mealy...really did remind me of a bland geffner, with more mealy pasty pulp, and traces of custard Apple flavor.

Well yeah, the genetics from 3 are there, but without specific traits displayed that you're after I don't know that I'd use it as a starting point for breeding. For intentional plant breeding I thought the two main approaches were:
1) Pick just one trait (say red skin) you were after and breed a plant that shows that trait with another one that's just generally top notch and may or may not have that trait. Then from the seedlings select individuals that show that trait and are the best overall for other qualities, and use them for further breeding to stabilize that trait you're after.
2) Breed exceptional individual plants together and see what you get.

Outside of red skin I don't know that 47-18 has any exceptional traits that would make it a starting point candidate for further breeding.

I do think given the lackluster taste quality combined with beautiful appearance, it might make a good candidate to graft on to front yard atemoya trees so fruit thieves steal it instead of the good stuff. You know, just graft one branch to 47-18 so they see the bright red fruit before the good stuff that's still green and camouflaged.

lol. I wanted 47-18 so bad that I purchased seeds last year. My babies are growing nicely.

U have pics of seedlings??

It would be fun to observe the variation

Never know what kind of hybridization might have gone on...could have been pollinated by another annona (if was from me)

Yes it fruited and produced a lot but only lasted to end of November all fruit dropped by them. Monroe still a better  producer and better tasting along with Semil and others.

Thanks for the update!

Carlos,

Happy new year, hope all is well.

did the kimber hold up for you?

or did you scrap it?

I'm wondering it's even fruited this year, or did it skip?  and also if the harvesting season is shifting, getting later or earlier?

pretty sure the plants made it through with zero damage...was just barely 32F, for maybe 5hr...almost seem like they enjoy it.

here in a definite cold pocked zone 9a, we stayed at 32F freezing last night for what seemed like 5hr.  (I think JFK in NYC stayed at 33F...lol)

there was no wind, and humidity was at 99%....I'm waiting to see if there is delayed damage on the garcinia from Luc, which is full of new leaves...also the mulberries have fruits on them still...and jaboticabas flowering all over....Myrciaria strigipes and pitangatuba have flowers and fruits holding...if they got damaged, it will take a few days to notice...but I will post pics and updates.

Gotta make room for more Plinias!

I'm reducing price to $700 per plant!  Local pick up only! still must buy both!

(no I won't reduce price anymore!  not even $699.99  ;D )  If they don't sell by the end of winter, beginning of spring, I'm gonna have to keep them and find some nice 50 gal root pruner pots!

I spoke with Paul Noren at length about junglesop.  He has not yet confirmed it is dioecious but he is strongly suspicious that it is.  He also commented that junglesop can be very good or very bad so it is important to get seeds from a good tree to increase your probability of getting palatable fruit.

John

I believe the term is "Androdioecy", where the species has hermaphroditic plants, and male plants, but not necessarily male/female (typical dioecious)

« on: December 18, 2016, 02:35:00 PM »
Galka,

that is a crazy looking pitanga...i believe it was one of the smooth type...

i planted a bunch of seeds, and that one turned out to be the runt...

it seriously stayed less than 4 inch tall for about 2yr...or maybe longer...

then I gave it to you, because it wasn't dead yet, and it didn't look horrible...lol I like to give weird plants to customers, as a gift as they're leaving sometimes...If i kept it...it probably would have died....

i hope u get some fruit set soon, and it taste pretty good...

keep us posted.

(BTW cool variegated plant Tropicaliste!)

Adam. How can I contact you to claim the anomaly seed? thanks

I'm working my way down the list, but it's going to take me a while to finish all the requests.

Please send me an email now, to flyingfoxfruits@gmail.com, and make the subject "Anomaly lottery"

and I will start the process of filling your order

thanks

Had some fruit set...you could see they had red pigmentation...but they quickly fell off!

it doesn't seem to want to set fruit yet, unless i hand pollinate...and still i only seemed to get half of those flowers to set.

I still won't give up until i get a fruit!  I just bumped the plant up from a 5gal to a 15gal...it's branching out like crazy.

nice fruit JF!

my crop was a failure this year!  I think this wasp nest messed up the fruit....they chew the stem to hasten the fruits ripening process? or to get sap to drink when there is drought?  or maybe it was a fungus?  but all the damn stems on my fruits looked infected, and chewed into...I lost about 8 really nice fruits!

Is it 1 seed per person?
two per person if they request two seed...  I only have 5 seed now....but should have more soon...so I'm working my way down the list.  Luckily the tree is everbearing...so we should have more seed soon.

I don't know, but they were doing tons of them and I've seen even bigger ones in Thailand.  I can't see where they would continue to do this if there were only upset customers at the end of the line.

look like they grafted on the root crowns of other seedling trees...which would certainly stabilize any marcotted tree.  I bet they do this to increase vigor, strength, stability, and protect from wind damage.

35 names compiled for the lottery, I'm trying to complete the lottery by tonight.

I made sure to triple check my list, so everyone who requested to be entered into the lottery in a timely fashion was included.

I printed out the names onto a piece of paper, now i'm going to cut them into equal sized pieces (and fold or crumble them into balls), and draw them from a large cup.

I will post an update with winners soon...and will share results on the facebook posts as well.
