I decided to go ahead and harvest the fruit for the Plinia sp. "Anomaly" lottery, about a week early, so I can ship for Xmas! Also, because I would be so angry if they got eaten by a rat (or even my dog...who I think ate some off this rare tree before!) Check out the strange shape of the fruits. I took a pic of the 5 fruits I harvested today, and then another with a comparison of Plinia cauliflora hybrid (Precoce).

One thing I notice about this variety already (when compared to precoce) is that it seems to have a smoother pulp, with less fiber (when eaten early at least).  When you harvest the Precoce (red jabo) fruits early, the texture is a bit more fibrous.  I still have yet to taste a perfectly ripened Anomaly fruit...i keep picking them early, in fear of losing the seeds.

another extreme bloom a few days ago...

pics from today, the fruit was just ripe enough to impatiently pick early...lol...better early than never. :P

here are the 5 fruits I pulled from the tree today, they got that funny Q*bert shape, with the nub at the base.

these seeds have a bit of anxiety I'm sure!  they gotta be thinking...please don't send me to some cold dungeon half way across the globe!  They want a one way ticket to Hawaii...but it's not that simple... :P

Some were grafted onto pond apple. Mine that was died in about a year after the graft.  The others were on cherimoya I think.

I guess that's why mine also died.  Does anyone currently have it for sale?  I'd still like to grow it.  (Is it really THAT GOOD?)

I think maybe one of the best tasting, and best adapted for growing in Central FL zone 9a.

Most cold tolerant atemoya i've seen so far, and highly productive without hand pollination.

That is why I'm so excited about them...but I could understand not getting so excited in CA...they have too many good atemoyas and cherimoyas there....lol...conditions are better for the growers over there...(JF know what I'm talking about  ;D )

that's the name Ben's Plants in Ca is using.

not sure of the actual species...but I'm guessing Plinia cauliflora.

the trees can easily be grafted on to sabara, have about 4 of them I bought years ago from Ben...they seem to be unique in my collection, so I'm glad I got them....He spoke highly of the fruit.

I'm finished taking names for the lottery, I will compile a list of names and post it soon...

should be about 14 days before I harvest seeds and draw names.

I will keep the group posted, thanks!

not sure if the seeds will be ready in time for xmas shipping!

this time of year, seems like fruit development is slowed down by chilly weather.

the fruit is just about to start turning red, but has to sit on the tree at least a full week (preferably longer) after achieving full coloration!

I will post pics when its ready to pick...

for now I'm still trying to keep up with names for the lottery...

just be sure not to enter your name twice!  (if you enter your facebook username, and your tropical fruit forum username, It will disqualify you from getting seeds)

probably possible to plant too deep, but i think it depend on species, and how deep u plant.

i saw a guy who had a big sabara in ground, and he kept putting more mulch around the base, covering the root crown, almost with 10 inches of mulch...i tried to removed the mulch by scraping it away with my hands, only to find, it had be overrun with feeder roots!

don't worry about old leaves looking bad...keep an eye on new growth, and also the bark...if the bark has lots of lichens, or moss ( or airplants, like tillandsia sp.) you know the tree is not growing properly, because these organisms shouldn't even have time to get established, and secure their footing on the caulis.  They should have been exfoliated off (or at least show signs of this).

as for the last seedling that may be a cross...i can't say what it is!  look kind of weird!
Adam
is it possible to plant them too deep ?
Just curious since its a rainforest tree,
and i am guessing getting a lot of mulch /trees falling on it, and also water flooding it.

i had to re-plant the red you had sold me
i put it in ground several months ago,
and had built up a mound of compost , coffee grounds and mulch around it.
so much so, it buried the trunk an inch deep.
(with this blazing heat we get, in full sun, i was watering almost daily to prevent burned leaves)

Anyway, i pulled it up, and re-planted.
now, since the ground was soft and wet,
and my dog who leans on shrubs/trees etc... looking for lizards
had uprooted the thing again... just a bit on one side...
i was able to add some soil under it, but now the plant is looking shoddy.
i am hoping its strong enough to handle the winter.

----

this is the larger one i got from PIN 2 yrs ago.

this is the smaller one i got from you Adam.
i dont remember what kind ?
I think you said it looked like a cross ?

lol, true does look like a balloon....

but I was thinking Q*bert

Looks like a balloon :-)

thanks everyone for requesting seed, and for commenting...

check out this last pair of photos...

I noticed something interesting about the fruits that I hadn't seen before...

they have a strange shape at the bottom of the fruit where it attaches to the tree...it's like an extended stem, with a bulbous shape...I never noticed this before with the Red jaboticaba (precoce).

it's hard to tell, because the fruits are so tightly packed, which hides the strange shaped stems...

see what I mean?

if you want to be entered into the lottery for a chance to buy seeds from the tree, please post a quick message on this thread, I will announce when I'm finished taking names, and when seeds are ready to ship, and when the name drawing will be.  I'm going to write down names on paper and draw names from a cup.

I will also post another thread on facebook for people to post requests to enter the lottery.

I hope to have about 10-18 seeds to sell...remember they are $5 ea, and max purchase is 2 seeds...orders for one seed are ok...and each seed purchased is matched with a free red jabo seed to compare with the "Anomaly" seed.

Any chance of seedlings being available at the Manatee Fruit Tree Sale?

still too early!  but looks like I will have to do a lottery for seeds!

they are gonna be $5 ea, with maximum of 2 seed per buyer...and it's ok to buy just one seed.

it comes with a free red jabuticaba seed (each "anomaly" seed will be matched with a red jabo seed) so you can compare them.

I will post more details soon...

thanks Robert, I hope to have some seeds to sell soon...i might have to do some sort of lottery...or restrict buyers to 2 seeds maximum....I haven't figured it out yet...but i definitely won't allow one person to buy all the seeds.  As for scions or grafted plants, that is still years away it seems.

Solko, i think i really started to plant Plinia seeds about 10yr ago, and then started collecting them from every source I could (over 20 separate sources, foreign and domestic) ...I probably planted about 3 thousand seeds (maybe more?) by the time I stumbled upon this special seedling...I think there was lots of luck involved, because there were 3 seedlings from the same batch, and only one of them has started to flower!  The other two haven't done anything yet, and are still less than 4ft tall, and are about 4yr old.

here are some more pics to give you an idea of the size:

Check it out. 8)

I can't believe the 1 Flying Fox has broken his vows to never have a bookface account !
Busy and up to his ears in requests I definetely believe!
Good help is hard to find. Keep it up Adam!

I forgot my vow to never join FB!! thanks for the reminder Jonah!  :P

here is why i finally broke down and joined...

I figured there is a whole crowd of users on FB, who don't engage in the TFF, so I'm infiltrating the enemy platform, to push my tropical fruit agenda on the world, via any means necessary  :P.  I have been steadily trying to spread the word about TFF....which is so much better in many regards when compared to FB (which is like walmart...where u can't talk to the owners, and they consolidate all the ma and pa businesses into one big box store)...TFF is like a ma and pa store to me...the admins/mods are real people, not a faceless corp.

The only thing I like about FB, is I can post all sorts of off topic stuff that isn't allowed here....but the fact that off topic stuff isn't allowed here, is why I love the tropical fruit forum.

Zuckerberg can suck my fingersop!  >:(

Happy thanksgiving to all!  :)

here is one that got better treatment, in a pot, in the greenhouse, with ample water

from Nov of 2015 in 15 gal pot

today, 60 gal

222
The rate of growth and size for my one year old seedling I cant even imagine it being the size of Oscars one in 20 years  :'( :'( :'(
They start to grow a lot faster once they are a couple of feet tall and in the ground.

unless u live in central FL like me...where we get no rain, and too much heat for spring/summer, and then too cold for winter!  It really stunts the tree....leaves always slightly burnt over here...but the tree is strong.

223
Adam:
I thought you were keeping them all in pots? Did the growth rate change any once in ground? I have a few specimens still in pots that I intend to plant out after this winter. They are about 4 years old now. How old is this one you photographed?
Keith

planted one out a while ago, growth rate same, real slow.
not sure how old, but about 8-10yr I assume by now.

224
check out the updated pic...

here is one from last year, around October 2015

I have a small seedling of Lucīs garcinia, 50 cm tall. This weekend I noted the trunk has a few cracks, and an yellow goma exudes from them. Is it normal? Somebody already experienced this?
If it isnīt normal, thereīs something I can do to cure the seedling?
It's normal
Lot of garcinias exude this resin
Called "Gamboge"

It's used medicinally and for industrial purposes (as yellow pigment for dying)
