Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cambodia fruit identification
« on: May 18, 2013, 08:57:04 AM »
I'm in Cambodia and have come across a couple of interesting local fruits that I've never seen before. Anyone know what these are?

This one grows on a large tree. The small, berry-like fruit is apparently seedless, and very sweet. I'm wondering if it's a Tree tomato?

This one seems to be an artocarpus of some sort. It is similar to ones that I've had in Borneo, and very sour.

Thanks for the help!

Okay durian experts (Mike T), what is it: Mon Thong, Monthong, or Mon-thong? I see it written all sorts of ways...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Thailand phytosanitary laws
« on: May 17, 2013, 07:31:05 AM »
Does anyone know what Thailand's laws are regarding the export of seeds, in particular durian seeds, out of the country? What about scions? I've heard that they are very protective of their durian varieties and that it is illegal to remove cuttings from Thailand, but I can't find any info online. I'm sure there are plenty of experienced fruit smugglers here who are familiar with Thailand's laws :)

I'm looking for Volume 3 of Odoardo Beccari's "Malaysia, collections and observations" (Malesia, raccolta d'osservazioni lese e papuano). Supposedly he wrote the first monograph of durian.

Anybody have a copy or know where I can get one? Thanks.

I currently have photocopies of

1. Durian Theory by EJ Corner
2. Ecology and the Durian Theory by Peter Ashton
3. The Species of Durio with Edible Fruits by Wertit Soegeng-Reksodihardjo

If anybody wants a copy of any of these please let me know and I'll scan it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Looking For Obscure Durian books
« on: March 01, 2013, 02:07:58 AM »
Hi,

I'm looking for two rather rare or difficult to find books having to do with durian.

1. Ecology and the Durian Theory by Peter Ashton

2. The Durian Theory or the Origin of the Modern Tree by EJ Corner.

Does anyone happen to have a copy of this or know who I can contact to get my hands on a copy (or a photocopy, fax, scan, whatever)?

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best Durian Resources/Books
« on: February 25, 2013, 02:44:23 PM »
What do you think are the best resources for information about the durian? I am especially looking for history of varieties, cataloging of species, and history of durian trade in Southeast Asia.

The best book I've found is Durio, of Malaysia by Salma Idris and of course Kosterman's work.

I really appreciate any recommendations! Thanks :)
