Tropical Fruit Discussion / Starfruit (Carambola) on Steroids
« on: October 31, 2013, 02:16:39 AM »
Here's the tree making thousands of fruits:

I have 4 other starfruit trees, but not quite as loaded as this one.

Today there was a farm visit to my place by folks from CRFG and HTFG in conjunction with the conference. I didn't count but i guess around 100 people came to visit. Fortunately i took these photos of fruits i had just picked for the display table before the big crowd came:

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Big, But Few Marangs This Year
« on: September 30, 2013, 06:27:56 AM »
These 2 marangs were both just over 4 1/2 pounds each. Tree produced only about 8 fruits this year, but all large. It's an excellent tasting fruit. My wife described them as tasting like jackfruits for royalty.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Taste of Mabolo (Diospyros blancoi)
« on: September 30, 2013, 05:57:49 AM »
Just ate this seedless mabolo fruit (aka velvet persimmon). The taste and texture remind me of pear. It is less juicy and more creamy than pear. Quiet pleasant. Size is about the same as a regular persimmon, except more flattened.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dr. Zeuss Truffula Tree (Davidsonia pruriens)
« on: September 21, 2013, 06:51:34 AM »
Yes it does look like something out of a Dr. Zeuss story. But it's actually a Davidson plum flowering finally for the first time. At first i was mad at a hit and run driver that left the tree tilting to one side and the very top sheared off. But now i'm thinking maybe it jolted it into flowering? A hit and run girdling operation?

OK they're fruiting madly again. Anyone who didn't get any germination on a previous order of rainforest plum seeds will get a free replacement. This freebie is ONLY for people that ordered seeds from me before. Send me a PM with your real name (no addys) and address, and if possible the date of your previous order or your Paypal transaction number.

USDA to let Hawaii ship Sharwil avocados to mainland US
http://news.yahoo.com/usda-let-hawaii-ship-avocados-mainland-us-205328166.html
(One error: last line of news article should read: Sharwil avocados were introduced from Australia in 1950's)
Note how they exclude California and Florida to keep from stepping on CALAVO or Florida Avo Association toes.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Theobroma bicolor fruiting again
« on: September 11, 2013, 05:50:00 AM »
This is their second fruiting:

The trees are much more upright and taller than cacao, the leaves much bigger and rounder. Hard to tell really that it is a theobroma except by looking at the flowers. The fruits are up in the canopy rather than on trunk as with cacao. The flowers are deep red. Couldn't photo the flowers as so far they went unnoticed 12 feet up in the air. This tree is about 5 years old:

Some photos i posted from last year's crop:

Both my Kai and Mayong Chid flowered again this month, but only the Mayong Chid held the fruits to maturity. It made about 9 fruits. The trees are about 8 years old. It fruited only on one side of the tree.

The Mayong chid fruits are very nice tasting. To me they taste like a mango-plum cross. I gave some to a friend who thought they tasted like persimmon-loquat. We ate them skin and all. The skin is a little bit tart and the fruit is nice and sweet and very juicy. I think this fruit would have wide appeal and commercial potential if trees could be made productive.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ohelo Berries (Vaccinium reticulatum)
« on: June 18, 2013, 04:50:18 AM »
Been collecting ohelo berries (Vaccinium reticulatum) here for long time. These are native berries in the blueberry family. They are favored for making pies, or jams and jellies, but can also be eaten out of hand. They grow at higher elevations, usually 3-6,000 feet where it stays quite cool but never freezes.  In this photo you can see the berries come in many different colors and taste also slightly different:

This last weekend i found and collected fruits of another related species called Ohelo Kau La'au, or tree ohelo, Vaccinium calcynium. This plant can get up to 16 feet tall. The other ohelos are small bushy plants, now sometimes sold in pots as they also make great ornamentals. This is the first time i've seen (or noticed) tree ohelo. Here is what the fruits and leaves looled like. Unlike regular ohelo the leaves on these are serrated and much larger:

Tree ohelo on left and 2 colors of regular ohelo on right:

Both these species have the marvelous ability to grow right in new lava, in fact they prefer growing in lava cracks:

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cannonball Trees Put on a Show
« on: June 13, 2013, 06:20:47 AM »
Two giant trees at the Hawaii Tropical Botanical garden are really putting on a show right now. They are massive trees and completely covered all along the trunk with flowers on one tree and fruits on the other tree:

The flowers are quite large and extremely fragrant having a very sweet smell:

Up close they have a rather bizzare look:

I estimate the trees to be about 85 feet tall, and they are covered with flowers all the way to the top:

I hope you enjoyed the show!

Finally got to taste my first fruit of Amazon tree grape. Has fruited for a few years, but usually the birds get them all, as the trees are very tall and can't reach the fruits. This time a cluster of fruits fell and survived the 40 ft. fall. The fruit has a nice sweet taste with a gelatinous covering around the seed. Main drawback, as photo shows, is there not all that much pulp.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Too Many Grumichamas--What to do?
« on: May 14, 2013, 01:55:03 AM »
One of my grumichama trees has set many hundreds, maybe thousands, of fruits. I froze some, but am wondering what others do with the excess? I sold them last year, but think this year want to try using them. Has anyone tried drying them? Any other suggestions? I have another tree that also is loaded, fortunately they're a bit later staged. Even a small volunteer tree close by is fruiting! The year of the grumichamas!  :-*

The winners are RtReid on the Dang Rasimi jackfruit which he nailead at 25 pounds, and Mike T, which he also exactly nailed at 200 grumichamas.

Here is a Dang Rasimi jackfruit i just picked. Guess the weight and win a free packet of 10 seeds mailed to you.
Clue: my height is 6'2"

Guess the total number of grumichamas (brazilian cherries) in this photo and win a packet of 25 free seeds mailed to you.
Clue: the bag is a one gallon zip lock bag. When held upright it was about 3/4 full. Include the fruits still on branch in the total of your guess.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rooting cuttings of soursop
« on: May 09, 2013, 05:47:36 AM »
This study showed that high success, 70%, is possible in rooting softwood cuttings of soursop, with rooting starting in 6 weeks. Seems like a good way to rapidly reproduce superior strains apart from grafting.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Persimmon Air layer?
« on: April 29, 2013, 08:14:20 PM »
Has anyone had success trying to air layer Japanese persimmon? I see in Claude Sweet's CRFG propagation chart that it says it's a no go. But wondering if anyone actually ever tried it?
