Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jaboticaba Disease Spreading to California
« on: February 19, 2013, 07:44:53 PM »
Hello Friends,

It looks as though the Dreaded Disease afflicting Jaboticabas in Florida has reached the West Coast.  Much to my surprise and dismay, it looks as though my Jaboticaba has been infected with the Janthinobacterium lividum jabuticabensis bacteria.  I am so upset since this is my largest and oldest Jaboticaba in my collection.  It looks as though I'm going to have to cut down and send this one to the charcoal briquette boneyards of Brazil; and just when it looked like it was about to start flowering....such a dissapointment.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / "Arizona Purple" Dragon Fruit
« on: February 16, 2013, 12:52:16 AM »
Hello Friends,

I just harvested my first "Arizona Purple" Dragon Fruit.  I have to say it was on par with the best Dragon Fruit I have ever tried.  The color was absolutely electric.  So vibrant and deep. It literally glowed in the daylight.  The texture was firm but very smooth with very little seeds.  The flavor was quite sweet and almost grape-like in taste; with a bit of kiwi and melon mixed in. I would definitely recommend this variety, especially to those who think Dragon Fruit are bland and tasteless. What it lacked in size, it made up for in taste and color.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / "Florida Giant Purple" Surinam Cherry
« on: February 02, 2013, 11:57:35 PM »
Hello Friends,

I just wanted to share with you some pictures and thoughts on one of my Surinam Cherries.  The variety of this particular Surinam Cherry tree/bush is "Florida Giant Purple".  The fruit like the names implies is purple and much larger than a normal every day red surinam cherry.  In fact, I would say it is easily as large as a Bing cherry.  The great thing about this variety, other than its great color and size, is that there is absolutely no resinous flavor in them at all.  I have tasted many many surinam cherries from many different bushes and have tasted varying degrees of that resinous flavor so I am familiar with what that resinous flavor tastes like.  I can say with 100% certainty that this Surinam Cherry has absolutely no traces of resinous flavor or lingering after-taste.

Does anyone have this variety or have ever heard of this variety?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / "Physical Graffiti" Dragon Fruit
« on: November 20, 2012, 01:35:48 AM »
Hello Friends,

Today I harvested my 1st Dragon Fruit of the year.  It was a "Physical Graffiti" dragon fruit.  It was really big, weighing in at just a shade over 2lbs., and it isn't even the biggest one I have growing.  I still have 6 more growing that I will probably harvest in the next week or so, plus a couple of "Arizona Purple" dragon fruit.  I also have a couple of "Vietnamese Red" Dragon Fruits that are absolutely huge.  They are still on the plant, but I would venture to say that they are at least 2.5 - 3 lbs. They are easily as big as a Grapefruit, if not bigger.

This "Physical Graffiti" dragon fruit had a great taste.  It wasn't super sweet, but it was still very sweet.  It was very refreshing with a distinct Grape/Watermelon flavor.  It was Absolutely terrific.  It was so big, I shared it with 2 other people and it was plenty. It also had an awesome color.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Purple Star Apple/Caimito
« on: September 15, 2012, 07:37:35 PM »
Hello Friends,

I have a Purple Star Apple that I have had for a couple of years.  It was a lot bigger, about 5' feet tall but it was damaged and ultimately had to be cut back to about 2'-3' feet.  It has bounced back pretty nicely and I believe that it is flowering.  Take a look at the pictures and tell me what you think.  It is absolutely covered with what I believe are flowers.

If anyone has experience with with this Fruit tree, can you tell me if they are in fact flowers?

Thanks,

Jacob

Hello Friends,

I currently have some seeds from my "Florida Sweet" Barbados/Acerola Cherry.  If you'd like, send me a self-addressed stamped envelope and I will send you back some (a few) seeds.  The number of seeds I send will depend on how many people are interested and respond.  However, it is 1st come 1st serve, but I will also try to be as fair as possible and spread the seeds around as much as possible.  I don't have a very large amount but you are all welcome to the seeds.  I will also take some cuttings and see if I can root them as well.

Thanks,

Jacob

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Green Sapote
« on: June 10, 2012, 08:31:45 PM »
Hello Friends,

I have a seedling Green Sapote tree that is growing so fast.  It is super cold hardy as it has been outside year-round ever since I got it about 2 years ago, and has suffered absolutely no cold damage.  I would estimate the tree to be approximately 3-4 years old. In the Pot, it is between 8'-9' feet tall.

I would like to graft onto it and would like to hear what Cultivars you all would suggest and why?

Thanks,

Jacob

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My Jaboticaba Collection
« on: June 09, 2012, 09:20:31 AM »
Hello Friends,

Here are some pictures of my Jaboticabas. I have also posted close up pictures of the leaves so that you can see the differencess in their sizes and shapes.

Currently, I have the following Jaboticabas:

This is a Jaboticaba I got from ebay about 3 years ago.  I thiknk I am going to keep this one as a Bonsai, as it has barely grown in the 3 years I have had the plant.

The following are pictures of my "Red Hybrid" Jaboticaba - The fast growing/fruiting variety (I have about half a dozen of these)

Myrciaria spirito-santensis ("Grimal" Jaboticaba)

Yellow Jaboticaba (Cabelluda) - These are older pictures and it is about twice the size as shown in the pictures

"Paul Thompson" Jaboticaba -  This is from a Jaboticaba that was owned and selected by Paul Thompson. Apparently, the fruit are very large, almost golf ball in size. The leaves on this one are huge. That is all I know about this one.

"Paulista" Jaboticaba.  Not sure if this is a Myrciaria cauliflora, or M. jaboticaba?  All I know is that the variety is "Paulista"

Myrciaria cauliflora - Not sure of the variety but I think it is a "Sabara" as it is from Florida

I also have a couple of M. Vexators.

I am still waiting for my 1st Fruit, hopefully within the next couple of years.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / "Kahaluu" Avocado Tree
« on: April 11, 2012, 04:35:00 AM »
Hello Friends,

After hearing and reading about all of the superior Hawaiian Avocado varieties, I am on a Quest to get one of them.  More specifically, I am after the "Kahaluu" or the "Malama".  Does anyone know where I can get either of these Varieties, preferably the "Kahaluu"?  Does anyone have either of these trees and is willing to share or sell some Budwood?

I would very much appreciate any help or information on where or how to get either of these Hawaiian Avocado varieties.

Thanks,

Jacob

Tropical Fruit Discussion / UC Davis Scion Order
« on: March 30, 2012, 06:24:45 PM »
Hello Friends,

I was curious to see if anyone has received their Scion order from UC Davis this year?  I got a confimation e-mail for my order. Then, I got an e-mail notifying me that I would be receiving my order in March.  As of today, I have not received anything from them, not my order, or an e-mail letting me know what's going on.  I just thought I would check with others who had placed an order for Scions as to their Status.

Thanks,

Jacob

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rollinia - To Prune or Not to Prune
« on: February 25, 2012, 03:52:54 AM »
Hello Friends,

I just wanted to pose this question to all of you out there because I need your help.  I have 2 Rollinia Fruit trees and as you can see from the Pictures below, they both have very different growth habits. From what I have seen and read, there are 2 types of growth habits, and my 2 trees are examples of both.

The 1st tree is only about 4' Feet tall and is almost as wide as it is tall.  I have never pinched/pruned the terminal bud, or cut the leader branch, and I still get plenty of horizontal branching.  As for the 2nd tree, it is about 7' Feet tall and practically all vertical growth. However, at the top 6" inches of the 2 tallest branches, they are now heavily branching out horizontally.

So here is my dilemna/question - Should I top/prune back the branches on the 2nd taller Rollinia tree to try and induce more and lower horizontal branching, or leave it alone?  I have plenty of room to allow it to keep growing vertically, and haven't any real need to top it or prune it back. I know doing so would shorten the tree and hopefully induce more horizontal branching, but would it help to induce flowering more quickly?  Or, would leaving it alone help it to flower and eventually fruit more quickly?  Being that this is its natural growth habit, should I leave it alone to grow as it wishes? Any information would be helpful.

1st Rollinia Tree

2nd Rollinia Tree

Jacob

Hello Friends,

I have a Jamaican Cherry Tree (Mutingia Calabura) tree that I am trying to sell or trade.  The tree is about 7' feet tall and Flowers and Fruits profusely.  The trunk is about 2" inches in diameter, or 6"-7" inches in circumferance. I am running out of room and need to move this.  I would trade for a Kaimana Lychee tree or Sri Chompoo Longan tree.  I will entertain any reasonable offers or trades.  I live in Southern California and am open for picking up.  I will also top and cut back heavily in order to ship if you are interested in the tree.

Thanks,

Jacob

Tropical Fruit Discussion / "Royal Purple" Mango Tree
« on: February 23, 2012, 02:42:41 AM »
Hello Friends,

I am now recently intrigued with the "Royal Purple" Mango Tree, a Merritt Island selection.  Does anyone have any idea where I might be able to find a Grafted or Seedling Tree, or even some Budwood?  It would be greatly appreciated and I'd be willing to trade or pay for whatever you think is equitable.

Thanks everyone and hope to hear that someone knows where to find this Mango Tree.

Thanks,

Jacob
