This kampung durian was sweet and bitter with an alcoholic taste. The flesh creamy, the whole experience reminded us to irish cream liqueur. We became a bit light headed after finishing this one.

Kra Dum Thong, Gradumtung or Kradumtung, means golden button. This is an early season durian, that bears 2-4 kg fruits. The flesh is soft, creamy with a buttery sweet taste.

In the thin hard brown shell that breaks easily, we found sweet fruits that reminded us to quince jelly: sweet and sticky. This variety to our surprise had no tart taste at all. Later we learned Thailand is a big producer of sweet tamarind, and that unlike other fruit this one contains a lot of Calcium.

I did my research before I posted and I found it fascinating. I also planted Nam Doc Mai seeds and saw as the first, biggest, most purple plant with the biggest leaves is very different from the others.
I love seeds and I respect Nature. In my knowledge and experience a grafted tree will never be as strong and big as a tree grew from seed. Trees from seed live longer too.

“Propagation by seed is only recommended for poly-embryonic mango varieties such as Kensington Pride. Poly-embryonic seeds produce a number of shoots, one of which originates from fertilisation. The fertilised seedling is often weak and stunted and should be discarded. The other seedlings are clones of the mother tree.”

polyembryony: “it is considered as a desirable character in citrus, mango, jamun, rose apple, almond, etc. to obtain true to type planting material.”
“nucellar seedling possesses the genetic make-up of mother plant and are true to type” (nucellar=not sexual)

“A polyembryonic seed is one which contains multiple embryos. Poly-embryonic seeds produce a number of shoots, one of which originates from fertilisation. The fertilised seedling is often weak and stunted and should be discarded. The other seedlings are clones of the mother tree. Yes, clones – just like a cutting, only from seed.

This means that if you grow a polyembryonic mango (such as Kensington Pride or Bowen, which is pretty much the only variety that we can buy in supermarkets in WA) or citrus (Valencia orange, Lisbon lemon, West Indian lime, Thompson or Marsh grapefruit, Murcott, Kara mandarin, amongst others) variety from seed, it will be true to type.“

As far as I know they will be true to type, as they are a clone of the mother tree.
Please link scientific information if I am wrong.

Perfect balance of sweet and bitter aroma, with a relatively thick smooth creamy flesh.

Yes, we left Costa Rica.
Nam Dok Mai is legendary, the sweetest Mango I’ve ever tasted and doesn’t have fibers.
It is very special, and one of my favourites❤️

This Thai Salak variety is juicy with no astringent tones. Its sweet and tart tones make the mouth water as soon as you bite into the smooth soft juicy flesh. This is one of our favorite salaks out there.

With its sweet and creamy custard taste, and soft flesh that is wrinkly and yellow, Puang Manee is one of our favorite varieties in Thailand. The fruits are small usually below 1kg.

The most popular mango variety in Thailand for its almost fiberless flesh that is very sweet and pleasantly aromatic. A well ripened good Nam Doc Mai has a taste that reminds to Durian. The seeds are poliembrionic, more plants will grow from the same seed. They will be true to type except the first, biggest, most purple one.
