Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: tommy atkins direct from the tree
« on: December 07, 2014, 08:30:38 AM »
I have a question, it looks to me like mango is the most important tropical fruit here, at least judging by the number of topics and posts.
The only mangos in our supermarkets are with plu code 4959, which should be Tommy Atkins, Haden, or Kent, judging by the pictures, it is Tommy Atkins, and now my question: Are another cultivars better then Tommy Atkins? I mean far more better? Because Tommy  is not worthy to eat for me, the taste resembles taste of carrot salad to me  ;D,  made from grated carrot, sugar and lemon juice and some people like it. And I have teeth full of fibres after eating this mango.

If you taste a tree ripen Tommy Atkins in a dry Mediterranean climate...you will change your opinion.  ;)

I got mine today.  ;D

Thank you very much Steven.

I have a question

Please correct me if I'm wrong, Lucuma La Molina was selected by national Agrarian University ( La Molina University) in Peru from Lucuma Da seda, so La Molina variety is supposed to be a better and bigger version of Da Seda, Is that correct ?.

Mohd

Hi Moh'd,
Great news...hope all germinate. :)

Yes, La Molina was selected by the National Agrarian University, but i'm don't know about the rest...haven't done research on this matter. Maybe, other fellow members can help answering your question.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Cocoa leaf problem
« on: November 11, 2014, 05:13:55 PM »
Xiao,
This looks like bacterial leaf spot...yellow halo around the spot.

Use a copper based fungicide(organic method) as a preventative measure...do some pruning to to promote air movement in the canopy. Mulch around the tree to stop the spores from spreading.

*Spray the copper with caution so that it's not spilled on the soil, as it accumulates in the soil and is harmful to the soil biota/soil life.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best/Worthy Passiflora varieties?
« on: November 10, 2014, 05:29:36 PM »
Passiflora ligularis requires a semi-shade location to cope with the heat during summer, as the plant is inactive at this time...once the weather starts to cool, the plants starts growing again...flowering occurs during Dec-Jan(Winter). Mine is self-fertile. I only have one vine in my zone. Takes 2 years to start bearing.

Another, very good Passiflora is Passiflora antioquiensis...very sweet with flavor and aroma of Passiflora edulis.

92
Well said, Afriadoni.

93
Hi Mohd,
Will have fresh seeds soon.

94
Beautiful fruit there Steven, thanks for posting! 8)

Hey Scott,

Glad you liked them.  :)

96
Almost all new world garcinia (called rheedias before) are self pollinating and not dioecious. All old world garcinias are classified as dioecious, but in reality almost all are able to either self pollinate or produce fruit without any pollination. In other words, there are very very few (you can count them on one hand) garcinias that really need cross pollination.
It's not really known what species the plant that Whitman called charichuela is. Seems very close, or variant of, madrono.

So Oscar, since this is the best info I've gotten. My Garcinia madruno won't need two trees to set fruit correct? How about G. xathochyumus or G. duclis?

Xanthochymus is self-fruitful.

97
Steven,
How long did it take to fruit from seed?
Obrigado!

Olá Berto.  :)

About 4 to 5 years to set fruit.

98
Hi Jack what variety is your tree? Thank's!  :)

Hey Luis,

I have La molina, but the fruit are from a seedling tree.

99
The  fruit of Pouteria Lucuma is a little sharp at the end. But your picture doesn't show the sharp side

Can you take a more clear pic? please

These are an atypical shaped lucuma by the looks of them. They have a small nipple at the bottom, as pictured in two pics, but are much more round in form than the normal type.

Stephen, have you tasted these ones? Are they dry or a bit moist, sweet or bitter?

Thanks amigo!

Hey Bruce.

Yes, for several years now.  :) They are a bit moist and sweet...with smooth texture.

Hi Davidia,

The fruit on the tree are immature. This variety is more flat than pointed. I'll take a pic inside the fruit.
