I haven't learned to graft yet.  What's my best resource for learning?  Does YouTube have any good videos on the subject?

John, check these out:

Hi wonderfruit, what tree are you planning on grafting them onto?

Jeff, sorry if the question was vague.  Here is more details on each question:

- What is the variety of the parent trees?   This one is straight forward, just want to know the parent(s) of the seeds.

- Have they been tested in Florida?  Most tree improvement programs are beneficial but based on a recurrent selection.  I am not sure if there was such tree improvement or "testing" on the seedlings being sold.  As you know, Durian is not a household tree here and was just curious on the history from the seller.  For example, was there any type of testing such as planting 1000 seeds and seeing which ones do better in our climate.

I hope it makes a little more sense now what I was asking from the seller.

Thanks.

Thank you for the post.  I have two questions if you don't mind:

-What is the variety of the parent trees?
-Have they been tested in Florida?

Thanks

I picked up some nice Barnel loppers from pne tools.  They have a good discount if you mention Tropical Fruit Forum - promo code "mango".  To get the special pricing, you must send an email to sales@pnetools.com and they will place the order by email/phone with the discount.

Pancrazio, good job with the soil.  I would not recommend adding mulch since it can also raise your nitrogen level.

Congrats, nice looking fruit and fast growth.  I am still waiting for mines to flower after 5 years in the ground.

in the philippines they use newspaper too. seems to be effective.

i don't think a plastic bag is a good idea because it doesn't allow for any air flow.

Correct, plastic bag will not work for mango.  It will block needed air.  It will destroy the fruit, increase anthracnose majorly to the point of destroying the fruit and also the fruit will not develop proper flavor.  Remove the plastic bag as soon as you can and put in paper or netting.  My two cents.

Has anyone been able to get their hands on one of these purple sugar apples?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Indoor Mallika Mango tree is blooming!

I recommend not touching the blooms.  You most likely have limited height growing this tree indoors correct?  This will help the tree not take off, eventually you will have to do some pruning anyways, but leave the pruning for the same day you pick the last fruit from your indoor mango tree.

What did you use to pollinate the flower?

Palmer still all green.

Adam, Mr. Minh looks promising, do you have a picture of the tree/fruit set for this year?  Thanks.

I can make you a grafted tree for free of Black Gold Jackfruit if you can wait a couple of months.

Another option for hedge would be cocoplum (Chrysobalanus icaco).

The best so far in taste for me has been the "red lady" frutabomba.  It has a super sweet flavor, when making juice you barely need to add sugar if at all.

Jet, I noticed you mentioned flower dropping?  Please hand pollinate your flowers and that should help you have some fruit.  Here is a video on how to do that:

I also think the issue is Sugar Apple rootstock was used on your Gefner Atemoya.  Make sure the new tree you purchase is using Atemoya rootstock or even better Cherimoya rootstock.   ;)  You might want to talk to Adam to see if he can make you a Gefner with Cherimoya rootstock.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Growing Keitt Mangoes from seeds?
« on: April 16, 2014, 09:48:02 AM »
I agree with Mr. Clean, in about a year when your seedlings are about pencil size, go back to that farmer where you got the fruit from and also get some pieces of "budwood" from the Keitt tree and graft the Keitt budwood (scions) onto your seedlings.

PS: I am glad you are getting along with your father in law.  That is a good thing. :)
