Folks, is anyone currently successfully growing Cherimoya which gives fruit in South Florida? (not dream atemoya)

Which variety have you gotten to fruit and how many fruit per year?

If you have any pictures, it would be nice to see a picture of your tree and fruits.

Thanks.  :)

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Costa Rica Fruit Tree Suppliers

Thomas, hope all is well.  I have a couple of questions for you:

-Are you going to grow for hobby use, for nursery (propagation, sale) or for commercial use (fruit grove, sell the fruit)
-Are you going to export the fruit or local sales?
-Make sure you find out what is appropriate for your micro-climate (Rambutan, mangosteens, Durian)
-Get grafted trees that have a named variety and not some seedlings.   (Mangosteen are ok for seedlings, Durian is better grafted)
-Search google for "costa rica fruits for export" if you will be exporting them
-Search google for "viveros de frutales costa rica"
This one came up for me: http://agronegocioscr.com/empresas/ornamentales/viverolascanas
-Take your time, selection is very important (even though you said you need this ASAP but patience is key at this time for you)
-Plan your rows (length from one tree to the next and from one row to the next), plan row orientation for sun
-Plan irrigation
-Organize the rows into type of trees, for 15 acres maybe you want to do 2-3 types of trees at most?  (5 Acres for each type for commercial use)

Hope this helps.   I am sure others can give more advice also.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Pond Apple as root stock
« on: March 13, 2014, 04:19:36 PM »
There are particular cases where Pond Apple are beneficial as rootstock.  A friend of mine has flooding issues in his yard.  His fruit trees such as Sugar Apple where not doing too good with the flooding conditions.  We did testing of Pond Apple rootstock.   A custard apple (Annona Reticulata) was grafted onto the Pond Apple.  It is doing excellent and fruited in less than a year after being grafted.  The only fruit it gave did fall off but I was not expecting such a young graft to hold it.  The reticulata is growing vigorously.

Nice work Adam.   :)

Har, thank you for the info.  Have you done any experiments grafting Cherimoya onto Annona Montana rootstock?

60
nullzero, I agree we have to find the right combination rootstock/cherimoya variety that will fruit in Florida.  (maybe even finding one that is resistant to Green Leafhoppers)  I will keep you posted on what works out here in the future.

+1 for the treehouse nursery.

Grafting knives are different.  They allow you to do a straight cut.  The reason being they are flat on one side and bevel on the other.

Here is a good recommendation:

Victorinox Grafting Knife:

Guanabana go straight up if not pruned.

Nice Mallika.  No need to remove or cut the flower panicles.  It will drop by itself anything that it cannot take care of.

Patrick, I would like to try Buddy Tape one day, but the price is so steep.   :o   So far, years using Parafilm Grafting Tape and zero issues with it.

They were developed for different uses.

Parafilm M is a laboratory tape (not originally designed for horticulture) and is used for sealing labware.  This is the one with the backing.

Parafilm Nursery Grafting tape was developed to serve the horticulture industry.  This is the one without the backing.

Great idea, we should do this annually in a specific location.   Other forums have a similar concept.  I agree the week before or after an event would be great for the ones traveling down here.

Also, I recommend you give it a name such as:

"The First Annual Tropical Fruit Forum Fest" will be held in Homestead this year.

It looks like it's short because it fell during a storm and then started growing up again?   :o

My friend called me up and told me he had some weird green fruit on a tree in his backyard..so I went over and found about a 20 foot tree loaded with guanabana...some small, some big, and a bunch on the ground that were ripe and some rotted...I quickly started cutting them open and sampling some...not much cottony fiber..very good flavor...I took some home and made a shake...I can get plenty of budwood, but has anyone tried grafting this onto Atemoya or Sugar Apple...I really have no space left but would like to multi-graft this onto an existing tree...

Good find on that soursop.  Folks from CA might want to try that budwood.
