Persimmons are ripe at the end of the year.. Around here close to nov-jan...around Christmas and New year you see these bare trees with no leaves at all but golden/orange fruit hanging on them...just like Christmas ornaments...:)

:) It's hard to see the pic...But cookie monster may be right..:)

Michelia champaca, has a wonderful fragrance to it's flowers, and orange flowers..

Michelia champaca - Alba, is the white flowered variety of the same plant. This is the one i have, same scent, but white flowers. I can't see your flower but i'm adding a pic of a few of mine. They should look familiar, just different in color.

My champaca doesn't have any fruit on it...Wait till you get a better ID of it before you eat anything, just to be safe. I don't think they are edible.

Zands,

I do have two trees.. one large Makok that i've had for a couple of years now... I thought the sapodillas wouldn't make it here, but they are special for my Dad so i gave them a try... I think they are hardy to 28-30. I  don't know of anyone personally growing them here in Houston, but I'm sure they are out there.. ;) There is a growing interest in the sapodillas...

I've the Makok in a large pot, due to frost/deer, but for the last couple of years (older now) it stays out without any protection and it's happy as can be and laden with fruit right now, but i still have a couple of months to go before i can pick them. I also have a recently acquired Hasya and i'm waiting on tasting it.

P.s...I have a bit of an advantage, we have 8-10 sapodilla trees back home, planted before i was born (40+ years). Mom cuts the flesh and dries them in the sun, and this then can be frozen for at least a year. When you want to eat or blend in shakes.. just reconstitute them in a bit of milk for shakes or just water for eating, like dried tomatoes. You know what my bags are filled with when i visit home.. ;)

Not to take away from SWRanchers post.. but here is a pic of my Makok fruit..

X

Oscar... You can make a nice cold chiku milkshake too... Just milk, and cut up chiku... blend.. if they are sweet, you don't even need to add any sweetner...just like a mamey milkshake..:P

Most cold Hardy?? Mmm.. The jury is still out on that, but most do say that the Del Rio does better than others. I can't attest to it personally, but i can say this that I have Fantastic aka Pryor, (Bill Schneider of Devine Avocados says Pryor avo comes from Del Rio), and it didn't even flinch in the freeze we got a couple of years ago. Even this winter, it's happy.

I do agree that the Texas selections may be a bit more cold hardy than the Mexicola.

With that said, these Avocados can withstand frost/freeze for short periods. With longer periods there will be damage and freeze back, and if the union of the graft is lost you might lose the tree. It's always a good idea to protect your trees no matter what someone says the tolerance is, as your micro-climate and conditions vary.

Nice tree Ed..

Lila is a genetic clone of Opal (aka Holland, or Opal Holland). Not to be confused with Lula, which originates from south florida, but both do look similar as both have green skinned fruit. Lila is considered to be the second most cold hardy Mexican avocado,so i think you'll be ok.

:) Don't worry, as long as you've got some flowers on the tree and a bit of temperature fluctuations, you've still got a chance for fruit to set. Are your other seedlings flowering nearby?

Patrick,

Great growth in just two years..:) Wow.. Have you had any fruit set yet?

I had a lot of fruit last year.  This year I have about a dozen fruitlets, and still blooming! Thats a good question though,  I was concerned that constant fertilization would be an issue with fruiting cycles.. I admit to adding some 0-0-50 and Phosphates in Fall, but I do continue the regular regiment at the same time.

It seems to be working..:)
I looked up your "steroid" foliage spray formula and plan to try spraying my trees this year...I've had a hard time getting them to send out flower spikes... or keep fruit on...Thanks for the formula...:)

I'd agree with adding a slow drip...
Add some shade cloth to shelter the plant from the hot sun, i think the frost cloth may retain too much heat under it and stress the plant more (cause more drought conditions).
Also hold off on cutting/pruning for now... let it sprout again if it makes it and then do a scratch test on wood that you think is not alive, if it's no longer green then only cut it off.
Good luck..:)
