Kona Sugarloaf is supposed to be a good one because of it's low acidity.  I have a small one, but it hasn't been growing much

Put your trust in the mighty worm

Worm castings in the soil
Worm compost tea for soil drench & foliar spray

I've also read that a foliar spray made w/ minced moringa oleifera leaves boosts growth, too

"Raspberry.  There's only one man who'd give me the raspberry.............Lonestar!"

357
Who knew "Lonestar" was a fruit growing enthusiast?

For organic mulching, you can also try-

Bocking 14 Russian comfrey
Alfalfa/Alfalfa tea
Moringa oleifera cuttings
Duckweed

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Anyone growing Giant Duckweed?
« on: January 04, 2013, 06:32:13 PM »
Can you spare some?

361
I have 2 worm composting bins.  They are simple to maintain.  My plants benefit from worm compost tea about every month.  I chose European nightcrawlers because they are 2x the size of Red Wigglers, which means they eat more & they are a good size for bait.

362
Does anyone have some seeds of any of these to spare?

Nice pic!  I have a 6 ft seedling in my frontyard.  It's been growing pretty vigorously.  Can't wait for fruitset

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Fertilizing with Fresh Manure
« on: November 23, 2012, 08:15:20 PM »
I've also read about rabbit manure, since it's a cold manure.  I'm assuming guinea pig & hamster manure can be used as well.  They require less space, but may take longer for a sufficient amount of manure.

I've been worm posting w/ red wigglers & European nightcrawlers in 18 containers.  I've made worm compost tea on 2 occasions.  It seems like my plants have responded well, especially my green sapote seedling.  I keep the containers in the garage, with very little upkeep.  I highly recommend this manure method

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Bael Fruit
« on: November 03, 2012, 03:23:21 PM »
Tried a Bael fruit drink at a local Thai restaurant yesterday and enjoyed it immensely.  Quite refreshing.

I've heard the tree tolerates a wide range of temps & soils.  Does anyone grow Bael fruit?

Prickly Pear fruit

Do you recommend the Sri Kembangan over Kari?  I prefer sweet starfruits

jw, what fish do you have in your aquaponic setup?  I thought about blue tilapia aquaponics, feeding them with duckweed, moringa oleifera, malabar spinach, tree collard, chard & other greens.

Thanks.  I have an old bottle of corn syrup that I think I'm going to use.

I obtained the seeds from Hawaii and just planted them last night, so I can't elaborate on the taste.

I had a question.  I've read that unsulfured molasses is used to feed the growing bacteria.  Can I use maple syrup instead?  I thought honey might work, except I think honey is antibacterial, which is detrimental.

You can also dry the leaves for tea.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 1 gal fruiting dragonfruit
« on: August 12, 2012, 11:15:31 PM »
Here's my 1 gal Phoenix Red Dragonfruit forming a flowerbud.  I'm not a horticulturalist, but I think it depends on the maturity of the source of the cutting.
