Tropical Fruit Discussion / Guanon?
« on: March 06, 2015, 10:56:16 PM »
I was looking online at some seeds for sale called Guanon and described as A. squamosa x muricata. Does any one have any information? This cross is impossible, right? Or? The pic looked kinda like a rollinia but their shapes are so varied I wasn't sure. I can't post the pic from my phone.

I just checked my ilama seeds and am excited to see some popping up. The odd thing is that the bin labeled "floaters" are the first to rise so far! The seeds were started on 12/13. This is also my first attempt.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona salt tolerance?
« on: September 28, 2014, 02:05:31 PM »
I am curious about the salt tolerance of different annonas. I did the forum search and googled, etc. There is a little info but would like to hear first hand experience from some growers here. Specifically within 200 ft (61m) or less of ocean water. Thanks in advance.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Asimina Trilobas in the wild
« on: August 19, 2014, 09:29:18 PM »
I spent some time this past spring and summer locating A. Triloba stands in the brush throughout the south eastern quarter of the state of Tennessee. I have become somewhat fascinated with this annona relative and wanted to find and taste this elusive fruit. Being a native of this fine state it is sad to say that I had never heard of this fruit until my exposure to tropical fruits while living in Florida. While it is not a tropical fruit, after tasting these I think they do deserve mention.

These fruits were very delicious and quite complex in flavor. I can only describe the flavor of the fruits off this particular tree as a cross between mango, peach and some other fruity notes. I could not taste any similarities to banana or any negative after taste.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / sugar apple bloomed but no fruit
« on: January 06, 2013, 09:12:29 PM »
I have a sugar apple tree that bloomed well over the summer but never produced any fruits. It produced fruit the two summers prior. I tried hand pollination out of desperation but nothing, even though it didnt need hand pollination to produce before. I dont use any chemical pesticides in the yard, and saw plenty of bees, flies, ants, etc. The tree was watered regulary. This may be reaching a bit, but is it possible the lizards climbing around on the tree would knock off the blooms in an attempt to get the insects. I used organic amendments to the soil and added a gallon water with a bloom booster three times, spread out every six weeks.
