Tropical Fruit Discussion / Muntingia calabura flower buds?
« on: November 29, 2013, 02:51:44 PM »

I noticed these (actually it was Trilobatracker) just today, are they flower buds? They are the only ones on the plant, so should they be pinched? Since this is the first time it's flowered, would it even hold the fruit?

Great idea! Here are some I know:
Carica papaya (Papaya): 6-12 months
Lodoicea maldivica (Coco de mer): 15-30 years
Annona cherimola (Cherimoya): 2-4 years

Nice to have you on the forum, Cassandra! I have never tried longan, but have a small seedling, your love of them makes me wish I had kept more! Good luck with the jackfruit (another fruit I have not tried), I hope they all do well! Jackfruit are fast growers, so I have heard, and can begin flowering after barely a year.
Yeah, you can get both jackfruit and longans at the international market in Nashville (Rambutans too) But the longans aren't that good, we compared them to some we ordered from Robert Is Here, and Robert's were far superior.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Wanting to try abiu
« on: October 17, 2013, 10:10:53 PM »
Does anybody know of a place I can get some abiu by mail order or online? I haven't tried it and would really like too. Www.farmtropical.com sold abiu, but the website doesn't seem to exist anymore... By the way, are they even in season right now?

Definitely virginiana. These are fantastic and only a teensy bit astringent when fully ripe (near mush.) They taste a lot like pumpkin pie, but to really understand the flavor you should taste some!

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Where To Buy Tropical Fruit Online
« on: September 18, 2013, 08:38:38 AM »
Has anyone ever bought from http://www.melissas.com/?

I really want to buy several items from there the last time I bought produce online I got scammed thus the reason why I've joined this site.

That is a big company, and it's products can be found shipped for resale in supermarkets. I have bought chayote squash, jicama, guava, all from them, and fronwhat I understand, their website carries everything from passion fruit to mangosteen.

Are the mangosteen previously frozen, or are they just irradiated?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My papayas are sad...
« on: September 08, 2013, 10:11:59 AM »
Until I put them in the pots they're in now, my papayas were dropping about one leaf every 2 days. Now that they're in these bigger pots, they've stopped dropping leaves for the most part..... except for one.

It's the one on the left. Any advice on keeping papayas from losing their leaves?

Hmm... this is tough. I'd have to say
1.) Watermelon
2.) Mango (Dot)
3.) Jackfruit
4.) Canistel (Especially in a canistel strawberry smoothie from Robert Is Here  ;))
5.) Acerola

Yaaay I did it

Something is hurting my coffee tree...
It first showed up on the very topmost leaf, and is spreading to the lower ones.
Any ideas?

Hate to bump such an old topic, but my cherimoyas are about 7 months old now and pretty well established. I think it's about time to start fertilizing them, would 10/10/10 be good, or are they pickier about the micronutrients and such?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sprouting miracle fruit seeds
« on: June 15, 2013, 04:59:32 PM »
Ok, after recently returning from a trip to Homestead, I decided to plant the seeds from a couple of miracle fruits that I got. Now that I've decided that, what do I do to sprout them? I saw one website saying to use perlite, peat, blood meal, and bone meal. Adam (Saffran that is) in a previous post mentioned removing the hull of the seed and planting the embryo. What are the best techniques?
