Tropical Fruit Discussion / Muntingia calabura flower buds?
« on: November 29, 2013, 02:51:44 PM »

I noticed these (actually it was Trilobatracker) just today, are they flower buds? They are the only ones on the plant, so should they be pinched? Since this is the first time it's flowered, would it even hold the fruit?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Wanting to try abiu
« on: October 17, 2013, 10:10:53 PM »
Does anybody know of a place I can get some abiu by mail order or online? I haven't tried it and would really like too. Www.farmtropical.com sold abiu, but the website doesn't seem to exist anymore... By the way, are they even in season right now?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My papayas are sad...
« on: September 08, 2013, 10:11:59 AM »
Until I put them in the pots they're in now, my papayas were dropping about one leaf every 2 days. Now that they're in these bigger pots, they've stopped dropping leaves for the most part..... except for one.

It's the one on the left. Any advice on keeping papayas from losing their leaves?

Something is hurting my coffee tree...
It first showed up on the very topmost leaf, and is spreading to the lower ones.
Any ideas?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Orange tree in ground zone 7
« on: June 30, 2013, 10:15:40 PM »
I am about to receive a 6 foot orange tree. My questions: About how old would you say it is and could it be planted in the ground if it's protected?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sprouting miracle fruit seeds
« on: June 15, 2013, 04:59:32 PM »
Ok, after recently returning from a trip to Homestead, I decided to plant the seeds from a couple of miracle fruits that I got. Now that I've decided that, what do I do to sprout them? I saw one website saying to use perlite, peat, blood meal, and bone meal. Adam (Saffran that is) in a previous post mentioned removing the hull of the seed and planting the embryo. What are the best techniques?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Shriveling cherimoya
« on: May 22, 2013, 05:32:19 PM »
All of my cherimoyas were doing fine when we repotted them. Afterward, one of them (the tallest!) started getting a lil bit shriveled. I'm not sure what the problem is. Maybe that we put pine bark mini-nuggets on top?

EDIT

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cherimoyas (again)

I just remembered that they grow in the Andes. In that case, wouldn't they be able to be planted in the ground here?

I read about this fruit in The Fruit Hunters and can't seem to find out anything about it. It talked about gelatinous tentacles or something. Anybody know anything about this fruit?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Favorite miracle fruit pairings

What are your favorite things to eat with miracle fruit? For me I'd have to say either grapefruit or lime. I haven't tried very many things though.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Farm Tropical's sweetsop
« on: April 09, 2013, 03:53:13 PM »
I would really like to try some sugar apple, but due to the fact that my SFla trip won't be 'til June, it doesn't sound like I'll be getting any. So it seems like a good idea to just order them. www.farmtropical.com sells them, but my question is: are the sweetsops carried by  Farm Tropical the chewy variety? (For that matter, are any Floridian sweetsops chewy?)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Magic bean
« on: March 11, 2013, 03:42:33 PM »
In The Fruit Hunters, Gollner mentions a fruit called a "magic bean." I've tried googling that, but the only things coming up were about Jack and the Beanstalk   ;D anybody know what he's talking about?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jabo or feijoa?
« on: March 05, 2013, 01:28:19 PM »
Should I go for feijoa or jaboticaba? They both supposedly do well in pots, which I would have to do due to my lack of an appropriate climate...
And I know many people love jaboticabas, fruits and trees (I'm lookin' at you Adam) So what should I do? If possible, list a website to buy the plant from also.
Thanks  ;)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Gojis
« on: February 14, 2013, 02:54:38 PM »
2 Questions:

1.) I saw a website that said goji berries are hardy zones 6-9. Naturally, this excited me, But then I thought "If they grow in the Himalayas, then how can they grow here?" So, the question is: can they?

2.) I know that they can be eaten out of hand, but are they good that way? What do they taste like?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / COFFEE
« on: January 31, 2013, 06:56:45 PM »
What are some uses of the coffee fruit other than using the seed to make coffee? ( gets kind of confusing when talking about the fruit and the drink in the same sentence, eh? )

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafting question
« on: January 31, 2013, 01:55:45 PM »
I've never grafted before, nor do I know how to, but my question is: can I graft one species with another of the same species to make it fruit quickly?
