Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Who's growing Pawpaw?

Not growing any (yet), but me and my dad have found multiple wild trees and even an entire grove! One of the trees had lil baby fruits on it.

JF,
In your pictures on the first page, are those taraps? IS THAT AN ICE CREAM BEAN?!
I'm guessing you don't live in Florida  :blank:

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Shriveling cherimoya
« on: May 22, 2013, 05:32:19 PM »
All of my cherimoyas were doing fine when we repotted them. Afterward, one of them (the tallest!) started getting a lil bit shriveled. I'm not sure what the problem is. Maybe that we put pine bark mini-nuggets on top?

EDIT

I just remembered that they grow in the Andes. In that case, wouldn't they be able to be planted in the ground here?

I read about this fruit in The Fruit Hunters and can't seem to find out anything about it. It talked about gelatinous tentacles or something. Anybody know anything about this fruit?

Supposedly exoticfruitclub.com, they label it as jambu

Ok. Last Airbender is better though  ;) :P
The cartoon, the movie is garbage. (compared to the cartoon at least)

In Hunan I visited 张家界,which the scenes in avatar were based on
Avatar, the movie with the blue people, or Avatar: The Last Airbender?

Awesome!! Those jujubes are the strangest I've ever seen  :o

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Favorite miracle fruit pairings
« on: April 27, 2013, 03:22:54 PM »
Just watch out you don't make yourselves sick. You can eat too many yellow mangosteen, lemons or limes and hammer your stomach.  :(
and the citric acid from eating lemons and limes can be bad for the enamel on your teeth.

Yeah, if only good ol' MF would lower acidity too. If anything, it makes it worse. After popping an MBerry tablet and eating lemons and limes and grapefruit, my mouth is on fire  :P

Another thing, is there much of a difference between the effect of freeze dried tablets and the actual fruit?

What are your favorite things to eat with miracle fruit? For me I'd have to say either grapefruit or lime. I haven't tried very many things though.

From what I've heard, it contains some compounds from onions, and skunk spray too.

Sounds tasty! But what's the point if you could just get a mandarin...

Is it a dwarf variety? The one in my friend's garden has really nicely spaced branching and is only 7ft
If it is, it wasn't labeled as such.

What are dekopons? By the way, I went to Whole Foods today and there wasn't a single rare thing! They had some really ugly papayas, but that was about it.

And that is one crazy avatar.

Thanks  ;D

My fig tree came today! I got it from www.ediblelandscaping.com. It's about 2 feet tall. What do you think? Produce this year?

What are the best kind of papayas with the least amount of fishy-ness?

Not sure what the name was, but I had a red fleshed one in Hawaii many years ago that was the best I have ever had.  Unfortunately, I was on my honey moon and not very much interested in tropical fruit growing at the time, so I did not ask what variety it was. Maybe some of our Hawaiian friends can help ID what I had.

The reddish papayas here are Sunrise Solo, sometimes also called Strawberry papayas. BTW, all the solo Hawaiian types lack the funny unpleasant taste and smell many find objectionable in papayas.
You happen to have any seeds of those? MIGHT be interested.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Farm Tropical's sweetsop
« on: April 09, 2013, 03:53:13 PM »
I would really like to try some sugar apple, but due to the fact that my SFla trip won't be 'til June, it doesn't sound like I'll be getting any. So it seems like a good idea to just order them. www.farmtropical.com sells them, but my question is: are the sweetsops carried by  Farm Tropical the chewy variety? (For that matter, are any Floridian sweetsops chewy?)

« on: April 09, 2013, 12:10:00 PM »
WOW! I have no idea what species this could be, but it looks very interesting! Except for A. purpurea, it's the only annona I've seen with orange flesh...  :o
Except for junglesop, but that is NOT junglesop

I got the dried mangosteen and durian (both the same brand; from Amazon.com) for Christmas, and have had the Foco mangosteen drink from a near-ish by Asian market called K & S. The dried mangosteen was kind of odd, but not bad.
