Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango Turpentine Rootstock Update
« on: January 16, 2018, 09:12:37 PM »
The overwhelming majority of mangos that come out of Florida are Zill nursery trees grafted to turpentine from Costa Rica. Been that way for a long time. So this Costa Rican turpentine evidently struggles in California.

struggles here in AZ too. Others that are successful basically dig giant holes in ground and heavily amend the soil. Makes it so like having a giant pot in ground.

If you can track down a source for this, it'll look amazing in a greenhouse like that.

Firecracker Heliconia. Tallest heliconia. it can grow up to 23ft tall or so.

That's a dream job! wow! Are you limited to only edible plants and trees? or will you sneak in a few ornamental plants as well? and how will you be sourcing all these trees?

I tried two air layers this year and none grew any roots so far, after 2-3 months.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Hog/June plum - Spondis cold tolerance ??
« on: December 20, 2017, 07:51:44 AM »
are you talking about Ambarella? because, hog plum and june plum are different.

Hog plum = Spondias mombin
June plum = Spondias dulcis

from what I've read in the past, I think Ambarella/June Plum can tolerate cold better than Hog plums. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Overmulching?
« on: December 15, 2017, 09:06:45 PM »
I don't think compaction will be that much of a problem as long as it's not a heavy traffic path.

All the critters(crickets, roaches, worms, ants, etc.) that will be drawn to it and live in it will help alleviate compaction problems and help with decomposition. So I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just keep it away from the base and trunk of the trees. Use those empty plastic pots and cut the bottoms off and cut vertically, and place them around the base of the tree to keep mulch away from the trunks.

Hey Andrew, which nursery did you get it from? and was yours in full sun in the summer? Im looking for a nice hedging plant, and if it can take full sun, then this will be good candidate.

wow just 3 years?! Any seeds available for sale?

How cold of temps can they handle?

What about Caimito (Star apple)? anyone know of any trees successfully grown and fruiting in these sub tropical climates?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: White sapote cultivars
« on: October 25, 2017, 08:51:41 AM »
Read that Rainbow, Walton and Malibu #3 are top tier white sapote varieties in CA.  I got these trees form Bush2Beach last year and am growing them here in Phoenix AZ.  Hope they turn out good!
I also have a nursery bought Vernon fruiting.  It's been in the ground 3 years.

Vernon does way better than the slow growing Suebelle here in the hot desert.  I've kill many Suebelles before I got the Vernon.  Suebelle is less tolerant of the heat/sun and the cold probably due to it being low vigor and having woolly leaves.  It also takes much longer to start bearing fruit here(I read 8 years)!

Keep us updated on how those three do here in AZ.

I too have killed many Sue Belles.

My successful attempt now is a McDill seedling. Quite vigorous so far.

Anyone experienced on grafting these? what's the best method and time to graft them?

take the black nursery pots, cut the bottoms out and cut vertically  and wrap it around the base of the tree.

Really good for keeping mulch away from the base and root flare of trees.

this is exactly what I've been telling people. It's a waste of money, just like the rock dust that everyone seems to be so keen on adding onto their gardens. Just compost, and mulch is all you need. Make gardening simple and cheap.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: New Fruit Similar to Starapple
« on: October 06, 2017, 07:58:16 AM »
is it as cold sensitive as the starapple?

22
same problem here in AZ. Had mine in ground for two years, lots of flowers twice a year and no fruit set. Tried the squeezing method about a month ago, and no success with it either.  :-\  Could be a humidity problem?

I got this 15gal size and had a few fruit on it already, but pulled them out. Tree was trucked in from Florida.

I grow purple possum and it's a strong vigorous grower. I have it climbing a metal trellis in full sun here in AZ. Frederick does well here too. There's also a few native ones here too.

I was told Incense does well out here also.

I also just got a quadrangularis and so far so good in this heat.

I have a several planted in full sun. They do fine, but for sure will look much much nicer and happier with afternoon shade during the summer. Give them plenty of water though and iron chelate occasionally to battle our high ph conditions.
