Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Guava Grafting (top work)
« on: February 16, 2018, 01:53:38 PM »
Nice, Jan was unusually warm month. this time around Grafts of Guava have high chances of take as there is active push sap flow within trees. I have on exotic one that I need to graft as well to see if it takes.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Lemon Zest Seedling Project
« on: February 16, 2018, 12:32:25 PM »
Guys, do we now have firm consensus over what is true clone in poly-embryonic mango seedlings?  My LZ is into its 4th year now and looking very healthy. Although leaves are not like Lemon Zest (wavy), the smell of leaf sap is very strong and citrusy more than LZ.

Has anyone successfully fruited LZ seedling yet? what is the verdict? Mine might fruit next year or who knows when. Usually in CA we get trees to bloom from 2 years on.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Gulab Khas Mango - Very Intriguing Story
« on: February 15, 2018, 06:18:19 PM »
Must read true story of this Gulab Khas mango on how it almost went extinct, goes back to the 18th Century at a time when India was owned by Landlords and ran slavery. Gulab in Hindi Indian language means Rose and Khas means special

is anyone growing this in USA? Would love to trade with you!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Orange Essence Mango AKA 40-33
« on: February 15, 2018, 05:09:19 PM »
In December 2016 I had a list of 30 mango varieties I went to Zill’s
To buy. On the list to buy was 5 Orange Sherbert. When I finally got to the office to pay
The secretary read my list and told me they don’t have Orange Sherbert
Only a new variety called Orange Essence but I was too embarrassed for being so dumb I didn’t replace them.
So my 5 OE trees have been in the ground for a year and a month. They were 3 gallon babies and all 5 have grown well. I was a bit disgusted with myself for taking these but they are growing in a real
Healthy way with none of their leaves having any signs of ancanthrose like so many of the other 200 mango
Trees that I put in the ground the last 13 months. I am now insanely happy with my dumb mistake. No matter how productive they eventually are I love these 5 trouble free trees.

My 3 Gal OE continues to push blooms non stop. looks like it wants to produce a lot of mangoes, LOL. after failed attempts to remove blooms last year I am going to let it have babies. here in CA if tree blooms, it does not grow much at all that season as fruits are on the tree till late Oct.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Reed Avocado tree Weeping?
« on: February 15, 2018, 04:45:52 PM »
for this very reason I hacked my reed into small size to get better stronger branches. it again went to the moon and leggy, I will continue to train the monkey until it has strong branches for canopy. I also grafted Pinkerton and Jan Boyce onto it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Guava Grafting (top work)
« on: February 15, 2018, 01:27:23 PM »
I want to top work a tropical guava but there isnt really much info on best method and practice. I hope someone on this forum can guide me onto the best possibility of success. Here are a couple of questions i have:

what time of year is best time to graft guava?

What type of graft is best?

What scionwood is best (hardwood, semi hardwood, or green)?

Where on the tree is more likely to be successful (on hardwood, semihardwood, or greenwood)?

So far the only academic study outlining this type of guava work is http://fshs.org/proceedings-o/1955-vol-68/321-324%20(TAMBURO).pdf

Thanks.

Top work now and graft as in So Cal Guavas are now actively pushing and chances of take are high. otherwise wait till Summer

I prune once a year and use bioflora for Fert. I will post pics of my yard soon. do not let any branch grow longer than 12 inches, and make sure your cherimoya tree has low multiple branches no higher than 18-24 inches, this ensures you can keep dwarf height easy to pollinate. I keep my main canopy under 6 feet when I prune, at end of season it gets back to 9 to 10 feet, but majority of flowers and fruits are on lower 6 feet.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Tagging trees
« on: February 13, 2018, 12:19:24 AM »
I tried Aluminum tags but they split open but stay on, One I find most useful is using brother label maker, I print labels, have labels from 6 years ago and have not faded. Cant speak for Florida that gets a lot of rain, but have not faded in UV dry heat, after 6 yrs in my yard I know what I what, need tags for newer ones as everything I have are cocktail of 10 plus varieties, whether its mangoes, cherimoya, stone fruits, citrus, or avocados. I print long tag and then glue together the two ends around the branch, tag opens as branch gets thicker. However, I will perm tag them at some point, its always good to tag.

Just so you know...the problem with multi graft is that you will get pollen contamination. You will not get the true fruit of the variety you grafted.

I use a multi graft tree to hold my scions until I get good root stocks.

I have over 12 Cherimoya trees and each bear over 12 varieties to 20 varieties, no issues whatsoever. its fun to see how all these fruit and mature at different times. My favorite this year was Sabor.

Your coco cream could use some pruning, branches are too long and may result in weak branches. Coco cream as is snaps easily. recommendation is to not let any branch get longer than 12 inches.

I get these on my Alphonso all the time. Hey beauty is if these hold clusters, it will be on strong branch, yey!

It seems that the splitting of annonas occurs primarily in Southern California, where the difference of day and night temperature is relatively high and the rainfall is very rare...

for it it occurs in winter when we have rain. When cherimoya are maturing do not water or overwater trees holding maturing fruit. it will result in cracking. my experience in last 6 yrs.  This year with lack of rain except once, I got no cracking on Cherimoyas. and due to lack of rain, the taste of cherimoyas is incredible this year as as of Feb 1. Very intense, all varieties

« on: January 31, 2018, 04:58:51 PM »
Well, Y'all are NOT telling me what I want to hear LOL.

If anyone has an Atemoya suggestion then, I would appreciate it.  I do have a custard apple that was given to me very stressed, I hope it survives.

Thanks for the input, it is appreciated.

If you can get your arms around Hillary White, that would be fantastic. I heard its as creamy and delicious as Pierce Cherimoya.

Figs - I lost 3 trees to them, they ate entire root up to the ground and trees fell to the ground.

141
its a shame that he did that. oh well, keep us posted on refunds etc. I will topwork mine, Glad i put both in same hole.

142
Squam, of course I agree with those points.

I was reacting to someone else's suggestion that 'Sonpari' from Zill's wasn't the true one because someone in India looked at a picture of leaves and made some sweeping negative statement.

I actually think the Son Pari from Zill is the real Son Pari based on pics of the fruit, along with this description from India which describes it pretty spot on:

http://www.nau.in/pagefiles/112_Mango%20hybrids.pdf

If you dont mind sharing, can you please post pics of new growth that is tender, new growth, and old matured leaves? I know for fact that one we got from Zills/Noris does not look like the one from India, however I want to see how different is ours compared to yours. I am waiting on closeup shots from India for your knowledge and will post here once I receive it.

From what I gather from friends, a similar mystery exists for Florida's Son Pari and Langra Benarsi too.

Langra Benarasi for sure. However Sonpari appears to be the right one from photos from India.

My source who is at the heart of Sonpari Growing region, a good friend of mine who has mango orchards confirmed looking at fruit picture and pictures of Florida sonpari leaves to be vastly different than what he grows in India in Gujrat. He will send us closeup pics of fruit and leaves in Summer for us to see. what he described was that majority of leaves tend to bend in the middle of vein.

Below is a pic of the Son Pari grafted by Zills.

this was ID as fake and not sonpari by the grower in  India. yikes!

I'm very concerned about the authenticity of the 11 plants I currently have in the ground from this vendor but I'm not going to light a torch and head off to the castle until I'm sure there's really a monster there.  I think the plan of action we discussed yesterday is best and if, as it appears, we've been defrauded, we can proceed to take action as a group.

I also purchased two trees from Ebay from same guy "Guavaking". I also spoke with him and believe it or not, I paid $60/tree including shipping. Now shipping alone to CA costed him about $30 (it was priority Mail) no flat rate. Now factor in 15% to Ebay and 3% to Paypal, total 18% fees, $11 approx. so shipping plus fees = $41. he make $19 gross, now factor in his cost on growing/seedling etc.

The guy sounded very genuine, and this is his hobby and not real business. Again, I never met this guy but my gutt feeling is that we got genuine plants. Time will tell when we fruit though.

145
Chaunsa, yes, Anwar Ratol no because Anwar Ratol is from Pakistan not grown in India, India has Ratol that most dont grow

I successfully created cocktail trees of persimmon and they fruited for 3 years now and growing healthy.

148
Frost damage is not immediately seen, most severe symptoms start showing up after days and sometimes weeks, that has been my observation from last two Frost's in southern California few years ago.

production has been dropping year after year. This year my Behl 10-yr old tree produced about 20-25 of which nearly 15 or more are over 2lb easy, exceptional flavor this year.

here is monster seed trying to explode with very strong roots, it came from 30-brix sweet tart I had from my yard.

its in pot now waiting to sprout!
